nominating Delhi as a World Heritage City. The Tourism
literature released on the occasion was supported by the
World Monument Fund (WMF) through their Sustainable
Tourism Initiative. The literature offers comprehensive
information on network of Heritage monuments identified
by INTACH across seven heritage routes in Delhi. INTACH
together with various other agencies including Delhi
Tourism will organize exhibitions, workshops lectures,
competitions etc to create awareness as a run up to the

EXPRESS Travel World
Beyond the Textbook
EXPRESS Travel World’s Cover story (February
2013) “Beyond the Textbook” features around
educational tourism in India. It focuses on
specialized tour providers catering to the
requirements of Schools (International and local)
as they are looking at more and more creative
approaches to imparting practical insights into
education through a ‘discover and learn
process”.
Express Travel World sought opinions of five educational
tour operators from India who provide specialized services
to Educational Institutions. Mr.
Mehernosh Deboo, Editor of Travel
Unravel and Director and CEO of
Creative Outdoor Development
Education Pvt. Ltd., was one of the
five persons interviewed.
Mr. Deboo’s opinion: A new trend
has been emerging and we at CODE
are planning tours according to what the students are
studying in School. Students visit destinations with strong
historical background, geographical outlay, plantations,
tribal villages etc. which are on their syllabus. (part of the
ICSE Curriculum - Project Work). A questionnaire is given
to the students well in advance to help him do the
background reading (and research) of the destination. After
the tour is done, students (of certain schools) write their
reports on the tour itself. Project Tours have become very
important (to ICSE Schools) and we at CODE understand
their requirements and plan their itinerary accordingly
before we embark on each tour.
The Tourism Industry has at last realized the importance of
Project based tours for students as it corresponds with
classroom studies and opens the world to them. These
tours also makes them service oriented, project conscious
and helps to build their knowledge base on subjects /
topics like history, architecture, industry (cottage, small
scale and large scale), research stations, environment
studies the list is unending and can take in a lot of
educational inputs to make your tour a learning experience.
Project Tours is an idea whose time has come.

MAHARASHTRA UNLIMITED
In our quest to promote
Maharashtra and take it to the
World, Travel Unravel along with
CODE will be featuring new
destination in Maharashtra and
drawing up innovative itineraries
for student groups that will help
them know the history, art, architecture, culture,
monuments, festivals, and wildlife in the State. This issue
will take you on a tour with the Buddha. The Buddhist trail
all over India has become very popular attracting a lot of
International and Indian travelers. Following the Buddhist
Trail in Maharashtra takes the traveler to a five day
historical journey by train and by road passing through
different cities. The tour takes off from Mumbai (Kanheri
Caves to Aurangabad (Ajanta and Ellora Caves) passing
Nashik (Pandavleni Caves and thereafter reaching
Lonavala (Karla and Bhaja Caves) before concluding the
tour in Mumbai. Before we embark on the tour a brief
introduction of each rock cut cave to sharpen your history.
Kanheri caves depict the Buddhist influence on the art
and culture of India. These caves in the midst of Mumbai
owe its origin to the first century BC to the ninth century
BC. A Hundred and nine caves have been carved from
basalt rock. Stupas, Viharas, huge congenial halls and
ancient canals, cisterns and water systems are the
highlights of the caves.
Ajanta was a discovery by chance. In the early 19th
century (year 1819) some British soldiers were out hunting
in the Deccan plateau. One of them suddenly saw, from a
height, a tiger entering a horseshoe rock; His curiosity
aroused by the entrance of a cave. The hunting party
discovered several caves, against which bush, shrubs
earth and stones had piled up. A few rock-cut caves had
paintings on verandahs, inner walls and ceilings, these
revealed some of the most beautiful masterpieces of world
art. Today Ajanta is a World Heritage site and a favourite
amongst tourist worldwide.
Ellora is an archaeological marvel 30 km (19 mi) from
the city of Aurangabad built by the Rashtrakuta rulers.
Ellora is a World Heritage Site. Ellora representing the
epitome of Indian rock-cut architecture. The 34 "rock cut
structures – Buddhist, Hindu and Jain rock cut temples and
monasteries, were built between the 5th century and 10th
century. The 12 Buddhist, 17 Hindu & 5 Jain caves, built in
proximity, demonstrate the religious harmony prevalent
during this period of Indian history.
The Bhaja Caves share the same set of architectural
designs as Karla Caves. the most impressive monument
is the large shrine — chaityagriha — with an open,
horseshoe-arched entrance. A notable part of Bhaja Caves
is a group of 14 stupas, five inside and nine outside an
irregular excavation. One of the caves has some fine
sculptures. Karla is the best example of rock-cut
architecture, which is believed to carve out from a living
rock. Some of its 2000 year-old wooden beams are still
alive.

THE CAS TOUR IN PICTURES
The Warli Tribal Village Schools, Gholvad
had been unpainted for years. Funds allocated
by the Government never reached the School.
The students of Avalon Heights International
School on a Service Tour to Gholvad agreed to
paint the School
On the day of their arrival 28 students began their
task of scraping the walls of the School. They
had only two days in hand, which meant a lot of
planning and team work. They planned their work
and worked their plan.
After Scraping that evening the first coat of paint
was applied to the walls. Students worked
overtime to complete the tasks given to them.
Most of them worked without taking a break with
dust and paint all over them.
On the second day the students worked till dusk
completing the entire painting job entrusted to
them. They displayed excellent team work and
took a lot of pleasure in painting the School.
Good Job Avalonites and a good deed indeed.

IT 802: GREECE (Mycenas, Olympia, Delphi, Athens)
Travel Unravel....Unravels Greece a destination that was
perhaps most talked about in its times. The classical route
was a famous trade route that was frequently explored by
travelers, businessmen and commoners alike to make their
fortune. The trade route today makes an excellent tour of
Greece. Read on to find out more about this fascinating,
historic and desirous journey.
Greece is a journey that evokes memories. Standing on
the stone steps of the Epidaurus or the first glimpse of the
architectural beauty called the Acropolis in Athens, is like a
voyage in a time machine that brings to mind events that
occurred a thousand years ago. Events that the world has
experimented practically and over the years improved with
experience, proficiency and technological inputs. Be it
Democracy, Political Science or the Olympic games. It has
dwelled and shared scientific and mathematical principles
and introduced Western Drama, both tragedy and
comedies that flowed from the pens of Phrynicus,
Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. This originality,
inventiveness and vision has become a legacy a
legacy that is widely reflected in the
seventeen UNESCO World Heritage Sites located in
Greece ranking it seventh in Europe and 13th
in the
world.
As the cradle of western civilization, Greece has drawn
tourist for centuries. Greece is synonymous with antiquity,
with Athens being a city of intriguing paradoxes, ancient yet
modern; busy but so laid-back; a capital city, yet in places
as intimate as a village. Then there’s Mycenae, a place of
myths and legends. In complete contrast, Olympia,
birthplace of the Olympic Games is set in an idyllic pine-
forested valley and is the very spot where the modern
Olympic torch is kindled from the rays of the sun. You also
spend a night at the centre of the world, at least that’s what
the ancients believed Delphi to be. The Classical tour also
includes a day long cruise to the Saronic Islands to visit
Aegina, Poros and Hydra.
So come with us to explore, discover & holiday in one
of the most intriguing countries in the world.
