This is a report on SEO that I wrote to show how easy it is to get your websites ranking if you do the right thing. You can download the report by clicking here: http://wordpressexamples.com/seo-report-download/
1. Thank you for downloading this report (although I’d like to call it a write up,
really, because I am so fed up with the “reports” out there). And let me get to
the point immediately, because your time is valuable (I hope you know that).
Who should read this and who shouldn’t?
If you want to learn something so you can apply it to your own situation, this is
for you. I don’t pretend to learn you to make money overnight and buy your first
Ferrari next week. What I want to learn you is how you can find out for yourself
what works and what not.
If you think you know everything there is to know about SEO, this is not for you,
for the simple reason that people “who know it all” can not study something
properly. Scientific fact. The great minds of this world and in our history all had
one thing in common: they were INTERESTED, not BEING INTERESTING.
As you can see, I don’t like to open with a copyright notice. Not that I like
people violating copyrights (I actually don’t like it at all) but for the simple
reason that all that I have learned which is in the below write-up, I learned from
others and through the hard work of researching SEO methods myself. This
report is just a write-up I made because I am actually excited that I found
something which is giving me results and is boosting the rankings of my
website. Now, with Penguin 2.0 (I mean, whatevah) kicking in, I have even seen
a boost of my rankings and traffic, although I am not pulling hundreds of
thousands of visitors to my website (the niche is quite big, but the search traffic
for single keywords is not into the hundreds of thousands per the Google
keyword tool) but for a new websites to have thousands of visitors a month after
month 2 ain’t that bad if it is practically all coming from SEO in a market that is
quite competive. The market leaders are all PR 7 and 8 websites and for some
keywords I am ranking Nr. 1 on the first page and above these giants, without
ANY page rank. So not bad, right? And again, I am not the SEO God that just
called you to follow his religion. This write up is made so you can pick up the
things that would work for you, not because I say so you should.
Now, a short introduction about myself, so you know why I wrote this write up
and why I chose for the niche I am targeting. 25 years ago (yeah, I know, I am
“an old fart in his fifties”) I had a very disturbing thing happening to me. I am
not trying to scare you away, but I think when I tell you this, you know I am not
writing this to trick you into buying something. This is not a sales pitch. At the
end of the 80-ies somebody actually tried to kill me and almost succeed in an
armed robbery. To be honest, life sort of changed after that (and I can assure
you, that is an understatement). I had a paralyzed arm for a while (it is all
functioning again) and my life just wasn’t the same anymore as you can imagine
2. maybe. Life became the most precious thing I had and I had no time for any BS
(short for bullshit if you wonder) anymore. I had a dark 7 years after the
incident, until I realized the asshole (excuse my French) was actually still ruling
my life. That was an interesting realization and as they say in the English
language: the rest was history.
Why do I tell you this? To impress you? Not really. I tell you this to make you
understand that the life I live is far too valuable to sit down and spend my time
writing something to trick someone else into something or give him a lot of
crap. I hope this is clear now. Okay, so let’s say what I have to say and I really
hope you can do something with it. No fancy layout, no fancy words, just what I
experienced and maybe you can do something with it. If only one of the readers
gets inspired to do something with this data and succeeds with his own
endeavours online, I have accomplished my goal for this write up. So here we
go.
A few years ago I started to explore this mighty thing called the Internet and I
wanted to find out where traffic is coming from so I started a website in the
Entertainment niche, to be precise, about the then new TV show The Voice. I
found some great traffic sources I don’t see a lot of buzz about, but a website
like Yfrog gave me thousands of visitors A DAY! My host even started
complaining because at my best day I had almost 15.000 views and the best
month on Adsense made me over $1,133.84. And all based on my own research
and not using a lot of stuff from others. There was a short period of time I was
ranking above websites from NBC, CNN, PerezHilton and the like. However,
this is not a niche that makes you a lot of income really. Tried all kinds of offers,
but the simple truth of the matter is: these visitors are no buyers and I am not
interested in promoting Dating websites, because I think 99% of them are full of
crap. As a side note: most traffic I got because I used dates in my blog post
titles, like The Voice 19 January. And yes, I know the proper English is
“January 19th
” but I know nobody is typing it like that in the holy Google search
box. Dates, months, numbers, etc., when used right can give you a shit load of
traffic.
The good thing about that time period is that I started building Wordpress
websites (or should I say, struggled to build them), using templates from Elegant
Themes. What I like about Elegant Themes is they are very good for beginners
and you get all the help you need on their support forum. So I learned a lot about
Wordpress and its perks and problems. And by the way, if you want to check
them out and you don’t mind supporting the guy that is writing this (in other
words me) you can click here and check them out. (Darn, am I selling you
something now? I bet some sour people will tell me I just tried to. Shall we
ignore them?)
3. I started experimenting a lot further with SEO, because one thing I can tell you:
even though I am not doing anything anymore with this earlier mentioned
website about The Voice, I am still getting 200 visitors a day with no blog post
updates for almost a year now. This is all free search engine traffic and still
giving me a small amount of Adsense income.
Anyway, enough about that, let’s start telling you exactly what I did with one of
my current websites and what are the elements of the success I am having with
just one website that I used as a test and is now running great in a much smaller
niche than the Entertainment niche: the Wordpress themes niche. Although not
very small, it is a very hard to penetrate and competitive niche where there is
decent traffic, although you have to really work for it. Which by the way is the
biggest myth going around on the Net in my opinion, that you can work less and
make more. You don’t have to take my word for it, but as soon as I see that
statement these days, it goes “click” and my mouse kills the page or PDF file.
But through my work I can tell you some key factors you can use for your own
niche to get more traffic and test it for yourself and that is the whole purpose of
this writing. I have isolated a few factors that made my site and YouTube videos
ranking very high in the search engines (yes, also after this beast Penguin 2.0
was released). But for you to read on, let’s first give you a few of my ranking
keywords, so you can check for yourself whether you should further invest any
of your time in this write up or not. Because it all boils down to the fact whether
I really rank. I am also saying this because times change and when you might
read this report a long time after its release, Penguin 6.2 or some other beast
might have eaten my websites alive and this text will be obsolete. Again, I am
trying to be honest with you. Check several of them, because the search engines
are as stable with their rankings as the Titanic on the Atlantic Ocean with a field
of icebergs in her path. So no ranking is for eternity, but if you find overall that
the rankings look good, go ahead and check out what I have to say further below
the examples I am giving you now.
First keyword: Hot Topix Wordpress
Hot Topix is a very popular Wordpress theme. You will see the 3rd
and 4th
place
are both WordpressExamples links (link is http://wordpressexamples.com by the
way). The first one is to my website (and yes, with a thumbnail, I will explain
you later how I get that there) and the 4th
place is my YouTube video (which is
basically embedded on the web page that is ranking Nr. 3 by the way and is
showing up with two different thumbnails… How do I do THAT? You’ll find
out later on.) This result is from May 23, 2013. I bet you will see something else
because frankly, when you check out a keyword in a different location you get
different results, but even in a different browser you might get different results
4. (which, for the SEO freaks amongst you, has nothing to do with cookies by the
way). Anyway, check it out below.
The next keyword is a little less competitive and the keyword is Ciola
Wordpress Theme. And you can see the result below.
I am ranking Nr 1 and 2 for this keyword. And notice that Themeforest is
ranking below me (which is a very strong website).
5. Now, let’s look at something a little more competitive: Wordpress themes for
Musicians. Sorry for the different screenshot, but at the time of this writing, the
program I using to make the same screenshots failed me, so I had to do it all by
hand and crop it myself.
I rank Nr. 2 with the website and on the last position with the video from
YouTube. Again, it may vary on your end a little.
Another one, highly competitive… Effective News Wordpress is the keyword
(and by the way, I hope you understand this is not my current look that you see
in the thumbnail):
6. Again, Nr. 1 and Nr. 2 on the first page. Just check it out for yourself. And
again, the site that is ranking below me is a PR 7 monster with an Alexa Rank of
129.
Now, without boring you any further with these results, you can check for
yourself the following keywords and see if you see a website with
“wordpressexamples” in it or uploaded (for YouTube videos) by
WordpressExamples.
attixx wordpress theme
avada wordpress theme (which is a theme that has sold tens of thousands of
times, see the proof here)
quentin wordpress theme
wordpress theme for musicians
wordpress themes for musicians
kallyas theme
kallyas wordpress theme
responsive wordpress examples
squidmag wordpress theme
and last but not least, check out the keyword Wordpress Examples and see how
many times I am on the first and second page of Google.
7. Again, when in some distant future, this report is landing in your lap and these
rankings have dissapeared, now is a good time to stop reading. But if some or
most of them are still popping up, I think you have a reason to continue reading,
because from now on I give you a few simple steps you can implement to
dramatically increase your rankings for whatever website you are running.
What I will give you now is a list of things I did and which you can do,
however, one of the most important things I will give you first and that is a little
piece about your attitude towards your business. Now, I know you have all read
it in a lot of write ups from others and it usually is about how you have to handle
your state of mind. There is a lot of bogus stuff out there like the NLPs and what
have you of this world (really, in the end this stuff doesn’t really work) but there
is something which I think just sums it all up when you talk about attitude, etc. It
is a piece written quite some time ago by Dr. Barrios, a psychologist. Normally I
wouldn’t recommend ANYTHING from a psychologist, for the simple reason I
think the world would look a whole lot better without them. If there is ANY area
where you get NO RESULTS for you money, it is psychology and psychiatry.
But this guy at least wrote something useful about the caharacteristics of
geniuses. Yes, to succeed online you’ve got to work towards being a genius and
he sums it up in a readable format. What you do with it, that’s up to you, but
read the below and you’ll know what I mean. This is all you ever need about
attitde towards life and living: the 24 characteristics geniuses have in common.
1. DRIVE. Geniuses have a strong desire to work hard and
long. They’re willing to give all they’ve got to a project.
Develop your drive by focusing on your future success, and keep
going.
2. COURAGE. It takes courage to do things others consider
impossible. Stop worrying about what people will think if you’re
different.
3. DEVOTION TO GOALS. Geniuses know what they want and
go after it. Get control of your life and schedule. Have
something specific to accomplish each day.
4. KNOWLEDGE. Geniuses continually accumulate
information. Never go to sleep at night without having learned
at least one new thing each day. Read. And question people who
know.
5. HONESTY. Geniuses are frank, forthright and honest. Take
the responsibility for thins that go wrong. Be willing to admit, ‘I
goofed’ and learned from mymistakes.
6. OPTIMISM. Geniuses never doubt they will succeed.
Deliberately focus your mind on something good coming up.
8. 7. ABILITY TO JUDGE. Try to understand the facts of a
situation before you judge. Evaluate things on an opened
minded, unprejudiced basis and be willing to change your mind.
8. ENTHUSIASM. Geniuses are so excited about what they are
doing, it encourages others to cooperate with them. Really
believe that things will out well. Don’t hold back.
9. WILLINGNESS TO TAKE CHANCES. Overcome your fear
of failure. You won’t be afraid to take chances once you realize
you can learn from your mistakes.
10. DYNAMIC ENERGY. Don’t sit on your butt waiting for
something good to happen. Be determined to make it happen.
11. ENTERPRISE. Geniuses are opportunity seekers. Be
willing to take on jobs others won’t touch. Never be afraid to try
the unknown.
12. PERSUASION. Geniuses know how to motivate people to
help them get ahead. You’ll find it easy to be persuasive if you
believe in what you’re doing.
13. OUTGOINGNESS. I’ve found geniuses able to make
friends easily and be easy on their friends. Be a ‘booster’ not
somebody who puts others down. That attitude will win you
many valuable friends.
14. ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE. Geniuses are generally
able to get their ideas across to others. Take everyopportunity to
explain your ideas to others.
15. PATIENCE. Be patient with others most of the time, but
always be impatient with your self. Expect far more of yourself
than others.
16. PERCEPTION. Geniuses have their mental radar working
full time. Think more ofothers’ needs and wants than you do
your own.
17. PERFECTIONISM. Geniuses cannot tolerate mediocrity,
particularly in themselves. Never be easily satisfied with your
self. Always strive to do better.
18. SENSE OF HUMOR. Be willing to laugh at your own
expense. Don’t take offense when the joke is on you.
19. VERSATILITY. The more things you learn to accomplish,
the more confidence you will develop. Don’t shy away from new
endeavors.
20. ADAPTABILITY. Being flexible enables you to adapt to
changing circumstances readily. Resist doing things the same
old way. Be willing to consider new options.
9. 21. CURIOSITY. An inquisitive, curious mind will help you
seek out new information. Don’t be afraid to admit you don’t
know it all. Always ask questions about things you don’t
understand.
22. INDIVIDUALISM. Do things the way you think they should
be done, without fearing somebody’s disapproval.
23. IDEALISM. Keep your feet on the ground- but have your
head in the clouds. Strive to achieve great things, not just for
yourself but for the better of mankind.
24. IMAGINATION. Geniuses know how to think in new
combinations, see things from a different perspective, than
anyone else. Unclutter your mental environment to develop this
type of imagination. Give yourself time each day to daydream,
to fantasize, to drift into a dreamy inner life the way you did as
a child.
End of quote. Pretty awesome, huh? Now we have that covered (in other words,
if you don’t follow the above you won’t come a long way on the Net), let’s look
at the ingredients needed for consistent rankings and there aren’t that many.
1. Give Google the idea you love them and they’ll love you!
Sometimes I have to laugh about the things people do to get rankings. They do
all the things Google hates and go for short term rankings. After Penguin 3.0 or
what have you, they can start all over again. Also, did you ever see the spam
messages these people try to put on your website? How friggin moronic are
they? You really think I am going to OK these insane comments? And guess
what? Google knows! So automated link building is a sure way to get your ass
kicked by Big G in the long run. No, you have to make Google love you to
death! And it is SOOOOO simple really. Google owns Google + and YouTube,
so if you concentrate on these two things to promote your website, Google is
just going to love you.
The key here is to set up your Google + account and use your keywords in your
bio, links on your profile, etc. Do the same with your YouTube channel. And the
only thing you do with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc., is to do the same and
LINK THOSE TO YOUR GOOGLE + account. Google now knows you are all
about (YOUR KEYWORD). So if you sell mountain bikes, set it up so Google
just has to think you are an authority on the subject of mountain bikes. On all
profiles you talk about mountain bikes and the only friends you are trying to get,
is people in your Google + circles. That is all. With this you are pretty much half
way there. Yes, it takes some time so you have to have some patience, but
10. really, if you use Google products like Google + and YouTube, Google will love
you.
2. Do you really need Unique Content?
Yes and no… Yes, you have to have at least part of your blog posts and
YouTube descriptions in a unique format, but in the videos I always throw the
features of the Wordpress Themes and guess what, it DOESN’T MATTER! The
proof is in the rankings. But the first part I always make unique. Like 100-200
words. The blog post I make totally unique and 300 words. No more and I tell
you why very soon. The blog post has 1 or 2 pictures and a video. Needless to
say that the video has the same keyword in the title as the blog post or as close
as possible to the keyword and the pictures have the right tags and titles with the
keyword as well. The video links back to your blog post, where the video is
embedded. Most of my videos I make with ProShow Gold and Camtasia. The
reason being rendering in ProShow is fast if you have a decent computer.
3. The most important plugins you will ever use!
This is key, and maybe I should have even made this the most important point,
because there are two plugins which are pretty much mandatory. These plugins
are produced by the biggest Wordpress authority on the Net in my opinion, a
guy called Joost de Valk from The Netherlands, aka Yoast. The reason why he
called his website http://yoast.com is apparently that is exactly how you
pronounce his name in the Dutch language. These plugins are called Wordpress
SEO (which is a free plugin) which is the turbo version of All In One SEO pack
that a lot of people are using, and the other plugin, which is a paid plugin I am
afraid, is called Video SEO for Wordpress. This is basically the plugin that will
optimize your video on your blog post and will create the Video Thumbnail in
the search engines. And believe me, people like to click on those! You can read
all about this plugin here: http://yoast.com/wordpress/video-seo/
4. Yes, links are still important!
I use a program called Backlink Snatcher to spy on the competition and rip their
backlink profile. What I mean is I get all website addresses that link to them.
Thus now I have a whole list of websites I can get a link from and I make
comments on these websites. Just a few a day, which builds up your link profile
nicely. I don’t overdo it. I don’t care about anchor text so much. I just get the
links to my website.
11. 5. Tweets, retweets, FB likes.
I make sure that I get a decent amount of Tweets, Retweets and FB likes to my
website. There is not a lot more to say about it. Next to Google + this is the
social proof that I am getting to show Google I am socially active.
6. Set up automation through IFTTT.com
Just check out YouTube or Google and find out about IFTTT.com and set up
your automated recipes on this website. I am not going to explain that website
here, just now that I am using it.
7. Be patient!
With all the information you are getting in your mail, you are liable to try out a
lot of other stuff. I tell you, it ain’t really needed. If you follow the above, you
WILL rank. Period! So just continue and do the things above over and over
again and you will find yourself back in the Search Engines.
