I have known Colten Alvers in a professional capacity since September of 2014. Mr. Alvers joined the
Third Street Community Center as part of a service learning course at San Jose State University. As his
placement supervisor, I was able to observe written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and
ability to complete the course successfully.
Our nonprofit relies heavily on our volunteers to help us improve the core academic skills of
underserved children. Each year, we welcome over 250 volunteers per year as mentors and positive
role models. Our volunteers, like Colten, play a crucial role in motivating and encouraging children to
care about their school work.
Colten’s primary role was to mentor and tutor elementary school aged children in our After School
Academic Program. During his time with us, he quickly demonstrated a keen ability to connect with
our children, especially some of our more behaviorally challenged youth. He also went above and
beyond in offering to help our staff with any other needs in the classroom. He was quick to step up
and take additional responsibilities such as helping us build our social media presence and raising
awareness of our work both on campus and off.
In working with Colten I have come to respect and admire him for his academic accomplishments. His
work ethics, ability to take initiative, and dedication to bettering the lives of our youth was a
tremendous asset for the Third Street Community Center. Please accept this letter as my highest
recommendation for Colten Alvers. He would make an excellent candidate for any position he seeks.
