Our first semester has finally ended! Looking back on all the exciting
events and learnings happened in the semester, we can say that we
rock our first semester big time!
As the last newsletter of the year, this issue is filled with reflections and
words of gratitude. We have each of our Learning Neighbourhood
Head reflecting and projecting on what's happening next semester. We
also have one of our board members and the GSPA sharing their
thoughts of how amazing our team of faculty, staff and parents are in
creating one of a kind learning experience for our children.
We also summarised all the activities we did in our last week of the
semester, from the Sampah Sorting Challenge in the primary, to the
Indonesian Assembly in the Early Years. Enjoy your holiday and we
look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday 12th January!

SEMESTER ONE WRAP UP, LOOKING FORWARD FOR SEMESTER TWO
Early Years on its Last Stage for Governmental Accreditation
It has been a great semester for Early Years. We started by implementing the new subject Budaya
Indonesia from Geckos through Kindergarten. In Kindergarten proficiency lessons, we are now using
Singapore math outcomes and Jolly phonics. Two teachers are assigned to teach both subjects in both
classes, providing consistent and carefully planned lessons. Trash walks have been introduced to
Kindergarten this semester and regularly held every Friday to enhance our green program. We have
also brought healthier options to our snacks and lunches.
Finally, Early Years is in the last stage of governmental accreditation, having completedall required
documentation and received praise for our programs and organization. Read more.
3. Primary: From Wayang Kulit to Jegog, Marimba and Ogoh-Ogoh
Primary School has enjoyed a settled semester with grades 3, 4 and 5 in their new classrooms. These organic
learning spaces are beautiful and airy with plenty of space for group collaboration, circle time and working on
projects. Memorable Enterprise Projects included Wayang Kulit (traditional puppets) to personalize each
building’s roof to both an art (in grade 1) and a “slime” challenge (in grade 2) involving product development
along with sales and marketing for Bamboopalooza, to a great trash challenge across the Primary grades. The
visual and performing arts have been a focus for us this semester.
A dedicated Primary art space allows students to create larger and more refined pieces. Students have also
loved marimba and jegog and especially the Arts Showcases at the end of each term when everyone performs
and dances together. Read more.
4. Middle School: This Semester has been more Social-emotional Time
Building on a great year last year, Middle School this past semester brought in more social-emotional time. We
evolved mentor groups to encourage more intimate connections across grades and integrated our literacy frame
to create more dynamic topics such as cell-to-cell, a science-themed unit that also worked toward English
learning outcomes. In semester two, we will further improve on the afternoon mentor time by introducing
additional social-emotional learning topics with Pak Glenn and Pak Josh in order to quickly address issues that
arise. Read more.
5. High School: How Much we Have Lived and Learned since August
What hasn’t happened in our high school over the past semester?! It’s hard to believe how much we
have lived and learned since August. Dr. Philip Zimbardo taught us that we are all heroes in training
during his week on campus offering workshops, interacting with students, and explaining The Stanford
Prison Experiment
GS Green Generation learned all about climate change, polished their performance of the original
musical Noble Material, raised US$15,000, and kept a whirlwind pace of advocacy for a greener future
at the UN Climate Change talks in Paris. Read more.

6. Something Profound is Happening at Green School Right Now
The adjectives of the day for me were REAL, HOLISTIC and HUMBLE.
In the GreenLEAP programme, spearheaded by Pak Aaron, we saw students addressing real problems
with real solutions. They gained real insights and came up with real recommendations. We even ate
real cookies made with real coconut sugar. Many groups focussed on solving waste issues in Sibang
Kaja, from designing recycling bins, educating about compost, helping to develop the local recycling
centre and building an app to help the collection of used cooking oil. A big step toward an aspirational
approach to “making our world sustainable”
Can you imagine the challenge and pressure of real clients expecting real solutions from your small high
school team, in only 3 weeks? Or the challenge of working with a Hong Kong based programming team
on a smartphone app that would be used by the Balinese village community? This is global citizenship
at its best. Read more.

Primary Students earn Cash for their
Trash
Classes were challenged to sort all collected trash items into 15+
categories, which are found within Kembali. The challenge
resulted in Kembali paying students CASH for their trash. Some
classes raised over 20K. Students realized they were short of
7. their goals to fund-raise for a future field trip. Read more.

Early Years Indonesian Assembly
On Friday December 11, the Early Years pirate ship was covered
in spider webs, leaves, flowers, paw prints, flowers, leaves,
butterflies, bees, and even snakes! But do not worry, they were
only decorations for our first Indonesian Assembly of the year.
The children of Early Years put on an amazing show for the
parents to enjoy. Read more.
