5. Problem
● Shortcomings of existing alignment methods:
– Most are rooted in IT and overlook business strategy
formulations from Strategic Management
– Business insights not properly disseminated to IT and
business strategy formulations liberally used
● Different communication means and formalisms across
domains:
– Business uses natural language-based, schematic
representations
– IT uses clearly defined models with precise descriptions
● EA approaches include business elements but no linkage to
business strategy formulations are provided

6. Problem
Business strategy:
● remains unknown to IT—an understanding gap
● lacks traceability to IT
– thus alignment of business goals against IT actions
and results cannot be evaluated
● needs to provide insights to IT and relate to EA to trace
decisions, actions, and artifacts

7. Problem
E.g. during a recent webinar among 176 EA practitioners
(Gartner 2011):
● 1% had no business strategy
● 6% didn’t know the state of their business strategy
● 16% business strategy not clearly communicated
● 44% business strategy not understood or supported
● 33% business strategy is well understood

8. Goal
Build a unified business strategy meta-model (UBSMM) to provide strategic
awareness to EA via model-to-model linkages, because:
● Adds precision to business strategy formulations through formalization
● Complements the alignment of an enterprise’s various business
strategies or integrate with strategies of others
● Serves as a pivot model between business strategy formulations
● Enhances strategy communication by becoming a common point of
reference for mappings between strategy formulations
● Is extendable to embed more business strategy formulations being
constantly enriched allowing for up-to-date mappings

15. UBSMM to EA
● Conceptual relationships (UBSMM vs ISO/IEC42010)
– Actor as Stakeholders
– Business Strategy (low-cost, product leader, focused)
as an Architecture Viewpoint
– VC & SMBSC as Architecture Views
– UBSMM as Model Kind with UBSMM.SMBSC and
UBSMM.VC as Architecture Models
– UBSMM.SMBSC and UBSMM.VC constraints as
Correspondence Rules
– Choosing SMBSC or VC as Architecture View is
captured by Architecture Rationale (also all concepts’
instantiations)

19. Conclusions & Future Work
UBSMM is a unified conceptualization of business strategy
formulations proposed as a means to link business strategy
with EA, and provides a number of benefits:
● A strategic view on EA; from UBSMM to IS development
● Simplified model mappings from UBSMM towards ISO/IEC
42010
● Enhances the communication and understanding across
an enterprise to relate strategies and EA.
