This document discusses the role and qualities of an effective team lead. It defines a team lead as the person responsible for providing direction, guidance, and leadership to other team members to achieve goals. An effective team lead has good communication skills, is well-organized, can delegate tasks and facilitate contributions, and cultivates a fair and transparent environment. The document also references a survey that found peer motivation, encouragement, and recognition are the most effective motivators for employees, and the team lead is well-positioned to provide these on a daily basis to help individuals excel. The author then presents their qualifications and principles for being a strong team lead, including effective communication, being a team player, leading by example, and focusing on goals
2. Who is a Team Lead?
He or she is that team member who is given the responsibility
to provide direction, guidance, instruction and leadership to
the other team members for the purpose of achieving a set
goal(s).
• A team lead is committed to the team and its goal/s.
• The team lead is the magnet that encourages and attracts the
contribution of the other members.
• He is the motivator of the team.
3. A Quality Team Lead should…
• Have good communication skills and a
good dose of confidence.
• Possess above average organizational
skills for strategizing and tracking
progress.
• Master the skill of delegation and
facilitating team members’ individual
contribution.
• Cultivate and maintain an environment of
fairness, honesty and transparency.
4. Why a Team lead?
Though it is an accepted reality that employee motivation is
vital to any business, the age long question is: what motivates
our staff?
An employee survey, The 7 Key Trends Impacting Today’s
Workplace, conducted by TINYpulse (an employee
engagement firm), involving over 200,000 employees in more
than 500 organizations attempts to answer it.
Out of the different questions on different topics (like culture,
recognition, opportunities, etc.), we would limit our focus on
the motivation question.

6. Why a Team lead? Contd.
Based on the survey we can surmise that Peer Motivation,
Encouragement and Recognition combined is the most effective
employee motivation.
As the senior management cannot be expected to lavish the
employees with these frequently, the team leader comes to
rescue.
He or she is on hand to administer encouragement on a daily
basis.
The Team lead looks beyond the common goal to individual
efforts, recognizing and sometimes rewarding outstanding
performance.
8. People Management
Communication is the driving force
of every relationship and the
working relationship is no different.
I understand that people are
different and need to be connected
with on different levels. I am also
flexible and intuitive enough to
reach them on their various need
planes.
This would contribute to the
facilitation and delegation duties.
9. Being a team player
Though human dynamism must be
considered;
The Team is the sole focus and benefactor
of all efforts.
I would be objective and fair in assigning
responsibilities and receiving
contributions.
I recognize the need for Situational
Leadership and would engage it as Team
lead, for no one is a master of all
knowledge.
10. Great Leaders Serve…
To lead is to serve.
Leadership must be by example.
Hence I would always strive to work
harder than I would expect my team
members to.
This is an infallible principle as people
are more motivated by actions rather
than words.
11. My Leading Principles are…
• Objectivity
• Motivating
• Focus on Goal
• Tough decision making
• Engagement of team members
