- The National Library inherited newspapers from the Joly Collection of the Royal Dublin Society. Dr. Robert Jasper Joly donated his library to the RDS in 1863, with the proviso that it be transferred to a National Library if established. In 1922 after the foundation of the Irish Free State, the Chief Secretary’s office in Dublin Castle handed over its collection of newspapers from the NLI. Dublin Castle was the seat of the British administration in Ireland and the chief secretary would have been concerned with matters of security and defence. They would have used the newspapers of the day for surveillance purposes; to find out about nationalist and republican societies, events and movements e.g. if people like Tom Clarke made a speech somewhere the newspapers would record it. Since 1927 Library has legal deposit status for newspapers, which means we get a copy of every newspaper published in Ireland
