Who is S-Pace? Why did he visit us?
Dear Reader,
S-Pace was born in another galaxy called Andromeda. He has been traveling for the past 5 billion years when he fell by accident into our
galaxy, the Milky Way. As he was passing through unknown matter, he was stunned by spectacular glowing lights radiating from planet
Earth. He is very bright himself, thirsty for knowledge. These strong European lights, will surely enlighten S-Pace, about humanity. While
travelling through the unknown, he felt the need to learn about what these people who live on our planet share in common with him. His
mind wanted to learn about these people’s values, ethics, customs, cultures and what links generations together, their heritage.
Us together the hosts from various countries, have decided to collaborate so as to give S-Pace a mind blowing experience of our culture.
We’re going to explore the various facets of culture: tangible, intangible, natural and digital. We shall help him discover, learn and
appreciate the jewels with which we’ve been entrusted, how we are preserving this wealth for ourselves and the future generations All this
makes our villages, towns, cities and countries unique yet as we explore, we find out how actually we have in common and how much there is
that unites us.

➔ Christmas ornaments made of glass were invented in Lauscha, Germany.

St. Mary's Basilica in Krakow, Poland has: two towers of different heights.
The greatest attraction in Slowinski National Park, by the Baltic sea in Poland is the shifting sand dunes.
Mikolaj, the Polish Santa visits children on6th December.
The father of Polish Literature, who won the Nobel prize is: Poland’s Henryk Sienkiewicz.
In the Copernicus Science Centre in Poland one can find a film studio.
The name "Poland" originates from the name of the tribe "Polanie" which means…people living in open fields.
Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus wrote a famous book that changed the world. Its title is On the Revolution of the Celestial

Lights on Maltese Cultural Heritage - Village Feasts
Ohh! I landed in Gudja airport, I can see fireworks from the nearby towns. This is because Village feasts
celebrated in honour of their respective patron saints, colour night summer skies in spectacular fireworks,
behind which jobs are skilled men who are anything but fainthearted. The streets rise up to the occasion too,
with volunteers installing…..much of the work taking place at night. The churches at their utmost majestic
splendour invite both locals and foreigners for extra religious activities during festa week, even at
night.Street entertainment is provided by village bands using wind and percussion instruments after
months of practice and hard work.

Lights on Maltese Cultural Heritage - The sea
The sea has always been important to the Maltese Islands, apart from the spectacular beaches, it
provides income for fishermen who go out on their fishing boats for days and their families providing
the locals with a source of healthy food; of which the lampuka is caught between September and
December.
Yet, the sea provides another valuable resource: salt. These old men in the photo, collect salt - a
labouros and strenuous job, that unfortunately no one else today would like to take up. Salt, I learn was
used as a very effective preservative, less toxic than the additives we use today.

Lights on Cypriot Cultural Heritage
The Headmistress of Gymnasiou Paralimniou, Ms Athena Misou-Tsouri along with Ms Ms Terpsithea Koki
Deputy Headmistress, Ms Eleni Zanti and the pupils, welcomed S-Pace and took him on a tour of the school as
well as the area of Paralimni and Ayia Napa. Gymnasio Paralimniou firstly open its doors in September 1969. It
proudly stands right next to the occupied Varosi, Ammochostos.
On the next slides, you can see how S-Pace has experienced his time at Gymnasio Paralimniou, shedding some
light on our cultural heritage procedures during the time of his arrival (which was mid-March - early April!

S-Pace first landed in Paralimni, Cyprus. S-Pace came at a time where the Great Lent was just starting
therefore he went to the traditional carnival parade, as well as enjoyed beautiful moments with our
students.

At school, we celebrate various historical events that have marked our country’s history. April
1st is one of them! April 1st 1955 Cypriots began their fight for independence, which came
later in 1960 with the Republic of Cyprus Constitution. At school, we celebrate honoring our
traditional clothing, dancing traditional dances, singing and playing Cypriot songs, poems,
texts and many more. Here’s a taste of our recent celebration at school:

Wartburg Castle is one of the most famous castles in Germany. Elisabeth of Thuringia, also referred to as
Elisabeth of Hungary and very well-known for her support of the poor lived there in the 13th century. In the
16th century Martin Luther translated the New Testament from Greek into German while staying at the castle.

Thuringia is called “The green heart of Germany”
because it is mostly covered with forest. The
Rennsteig is a famous hiking trail that runs
about 170 km on the ridge of the Thuringian
Forest.Thuringians like having a BBQ. Thüringer
Bratwurst is a trademark; the sausage even has
PGI status under EU law.
The traditional Sunday meal is
potato dumplings and a roast.

Poland is a country with over a thousand years of tradition and history, which can be discovered in numerous
historic, religious, industrial and architectural monuments. Visiting Polish cities as Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk or
Wroclaw is great opportunity to travel through the ages and learn the fascinating history of that part of Europe.

This year 2018 we celebrate the 100th anniversary of
the restoration of Poland's sovereignty as the
Second Polish Republic in 1918 from the German,
Austrian and Russian Empires.
The baptism of Poland in 966 marks the
beginning of Polish statehood. Through the
ages christianity defined the Polish culture
and Catholicism had become the dominant
religion throughout the country.
In 2016 we celebrate 1050 anniversary of
that fact. There were many events in
Poland.

Our school is 1rst high school of Markopoulo, Athens, Greece.
The Parthenon is a doric temple in Athens, which was built in 432 B.C. It was the temple of the
unmarried women to the god Athena Parthenos. Iktinos and Kallikratis were the architects and the
scupltor was Fedias.

Panathinaiko or Kalimarmaro stadium was built at 329 B.C. to honour
goddess Athena, and there was a celebration Panathinaea.In 1896
the Olympic Games were held there. (1rst high school of Markopoulo)

Seferis, great Greek poet Zogolopoulos, famous Greek sculptor

Something special is Gaitanaki which is a traditional dance during spring time .It comes from
Pontos and M.Asia. It is a symbol of birth.
In greek tradition we make vagi at Saturday at spring, Easter in which we celebrate the resurrection
of Lazarous. It is a symbol that everything bad will go away. We make also Lazarakia which look like
human and we say songs. We hold a basket with flowers and we sing.

Our special dishes are dolmadakia or gialatzi stuffed with rice and
yemista with rice is another special dish in Greece in springtime.

It is located in Southern Europe and includes the two largest

collections of world art, culture and literature from many different periods. It has, overall, an
estimated 100,000 monuments of any sort (museums, palaces, buildings, statues, churches, art
galleries, villas, fountains, historic houses and archaeological remains).

Italy is famous for its sculptures and paintings. The aesthetic appeal and artistic excellence of these works are
known all over the world. Michelangelo, Donatello, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Antonio Canova, Giorgio Vasari, Leonardo
and Botticelli are just a few of the most important Italian sculptors whose works reveal Italy's elegant culture and
rich heritage.

Carnevale, also known as carnival or mardi gras , is celebrated 40 days before Easter, a final party
before Ash Wednesday and the restrictions of Lent Carnival Carnevale in Italy is a huge winter
festival celebrated with parades, masquerade balls, entertainment, music, and parties. Children
throw confetti at each other. Mischief and pranks are also common during Carnevale, hence the
saying ‘A Carnevale Ogni Scherzo Vale’ - ‘Anything goes at carnival’.

The Royal Family
The British Royal family is undoubtedly one of the most famous royal clan in the world. The
Royal family officially comprises of the ruling monarch and all of their close relations. There
are a lot of fascinating facts about the royal family. Some of them are listed below:
● Queen Elizabeth II is the 40th monarch since William the Conqueror. She has ruled
as Head of State since 1953.
● The Queen has 4 children with Prince Philip.
● The members of the royal family do not have any surnames. Instead. They use
surnames representing their house or dynasty.
● The Queen is the only person in the UK who is allowed to drive without a driving
license. She is also not required to have a passport.
● It is illegal to stand within 100 yards of the reigning king or queen without wearing
socks.
● George II was the last king to lead an army in battle during the War of Austrian
Succession in 1743.
● If you are ever lucky enough to meet a royal then you should not offer your hand to
them to shake.

The Observatory School - Bidston - Wirral - ENGLAND
Our school is situated in a small village called Bidston. Bidston is a village, a parish and a suburb of
Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, in the modern county of Merseyside. The area is a mixture of the well-
preserved Bidston Village, Bidston Hill, a modern housing estate, and the Bidston Moss nature reserve,
industrial estate and retail park. We are named after the historical building called ‘The Observatory’ You can
see it pictured below (first left)

Lights on Bulgaria Cultural Heritage
Secondary School “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”, founded in 1855, is located in a
small town of about 25 000 inhabitants in the South of Bulgaria. Our region is
mainly agricultural and opulent in tourist attractions, such as virgin forests and
rivers – sheltering unique species of flora and fauna. There are also many
historical and cultural places tourists deserve to visit. The nearest big town is
Plovdiv. It is about 400 000 inhabitants, it is the second big town of Bulgaria.
Plovdiv is the winner in the contest “European Capital of Culture in 2019”.
Another interesting place near our town is the winter resort of Pamporovo.

Over 40,000 artefacts were discovered in
Bulgaria and our country places 3rd in
Europe in terms of the number of
artefacts. The cultural monuments from
the Thracian, the Hellenistic, the
Byzantine and other periods have serious
impact on the Bulgarian culture.

Our town is mountain. The Rhodope mountains offer excellent tourism opportunities, many of which
rely on the region's diverse landscape, beautiful forests and biodiversity as well as the cultural heritage
and local traditions. The kaba gaida/bagpipe/ is one of the most distinctive symbols of the folklore
music in Bulgaria.

A Martenitsa is a small piece of adornment, made of white and red yarn and
usually in the form of two dolls, a male and a female. This tradition is related to
welcoming the spring..
Martenitsa is now part of the Cultural Heritage of UNESCO

of lace making dates back in 17th century, and the knowledge

Kurents
Kurents are traditional carnival masks originating in Ptuj. Their
presence marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
They wear traditional sheepskin garments and bells.
