J.R.R. Tolkien had a fascinating life that influenced his famous work The Lord of the Rings. He was born in South Africa in 1892 and moved to England as a child after his mother's death. There he met his future wife Edith and began studying at Oxford University, where he would later teach. Tolkien served in World War I and was deeply affected by his experiences in the trenches of the Somme. After the war he returned to Oxford and eventually published The Hobbit in 1937 and The Lord of the Rings between 1954-1955, which became one of the best-selling works of fiction of all time.
