My name is Jenna Cordes and I am going to discuss the educational issue of full day kindergarten.
Full day kindergarten has become more popular in public schools in recent years. Many single parents and dual income families encourage full day kindergarten. The support for full day kindergarten from these parents has arisen out of the issue of childcare. If their child goes to school all day, there is less of a need for childcare. Full day kindergarten aids in a young child’s academic and social development.
According to the authors of the article, Full-Day vs. Half-Day Kindergarten: In Which Program Do Children Learn More?, the first kindergarten class in the United States was founded in 1857 in Wisconsin. This particular class was German speaking. The first English speaking kindergarten class was not established until 1873 in St. Louis. When kindergarten was first founded, it was a full day program.
Having full day kindergarten in public schools means that the kindergarten students go to school for as long as the older children in the school. All of the students would be on the same bell schedule and bussing schedule. The funding for half day and full day programs varies by state. Each state has a different funding law. In Alabama, six hours is considered enough for a full day and it is funded by the state. Alaska funds more for full day than half day kindergarten. In Arizona, there is the same funding for full day and half day kindergarten. Michigan has no minimum number of hours a kindergartener has to go to school each day. Michigan also provides the same amount of funding for grades K-12 whether or not it is full or half day.
There are a few causes for legislation. Minority and low income students do better when provided with stability. Full day kindergarten gives them a better opportunity to succeed in the classroom. Another reason for the legislation is that teachers can identify with their students better if they see them all day every school day. The teachers can learn each student’s needs and help them do the best they can.
There are a few major benefits to full day kindergarten. Students get ahead on the curriculum by attending full day kindergarten which helps them in the long run. There is also a greater improvement on social development due to full day kindergarten. This happens because the kindergarteners are exposed to children the same age for almost twice as long each day as half day kindergarteners. This social development also leads to better behavior. The students learn how to nicely interact with each other quicker. Parents of kindergarteners are rooting for full day to become mandatory due to the idea that many households have working parents and no childcare.
Due to the fact that Michigan provides equal funding for every grade, the higher grades would not be affected by the full day program. The full day program better prepares kindergarteners which puts them ahead for at least the couple of years following kindergarten. The children who are at risk have somewhere to go and are more likely to succeed and do well for the rest of his or her schooling.
There is a possible negative impact on K-12 education due to the full day program. There will be a need for more classrooms and full time teachers to accommodate the number of students who would be there all day. The full day kindergarten program may be overwhelming to younger students because there will be so many students in one building.
In 2007, Rhode Island passed a law which requires for kindergarteners to go to school full time starting in August, 2010. The idea of full day kindergarten has been presented in Michigan.
Michigan Senator Clark-Coleman has recently presented the idea of full day kindergarten. Her bill is Senate Bill 162 and it would make full day kindergarten mandatory in public schools in Michigan.
In conclusion, kindergarteners may thrive academically, socially and behaviorally. The funding for kindergarten programs varies by state. Many parents are preferring full day kindergarten due to the childcare issue. Full day kindergarten helps provide at risk children with a safe place to be during the day. If this program becomes mandatory, there will be a need for more teachers and classrooms. Full day kindergarten may be in the future for Michigan schools.
