International Synergies
“International Synergies strives to lead the world in
innovative industrial ecology solutions for a low carbon,
sustainable economy.”
• ISL has run the NISP programme in the UK for 8 years
• ISL has worked closely with IFKA over the last 3 years on a
Life+ project to implement an industrial Symbiosis
programme in Hungary
• It is because of this pioneering work that the EUR-IS project
has been awarded to us
4. About IFKA
(Public Foundation for the Development of Industry)
• Has been active in the economic, research-development
and innovational life of Hungary for more than twenty years.
• Continuously working on environmental projects on topics
which are important for the industry and help to protect the
environment and point towards sustainable development.
• Founded in 1990 (environment focus ~10 years)
• 2009: Industrial symbiosis / theory and practice/
• REPROWIS & NISP 2010
In cooperation with ISL
5. Symbiosis Definition:
‘An interaction
between two
different
organisms living in
close physical
association to the
advantage of
both’
Concise Oxford
Dictionary, 8th
Edition
6. What is ‘Industrial Symbiosis’?
Modified from Chertow, Yale 2000
“Industrial symbiosis engages traditionally separate industries
and other organisations in a collective approach to competitive
advantage involving physical exchanges of materials, energy,
water and/or by products together with collaboration on the
shared use of assets, logistics, experts and knowledge
transfer.”

capable of producing 300,000
John Baarda: Tomato producer tomatoes per year
• Additional production capacity •Investment of £15M
limited due to high costs of energy
•Creation of 65 new jobs
•Recovery of heat from steam

Transformation
• Animal renderer processing
carcass waste and sending by-
products to landfill
• NISP helped them to send by-
products to the cement industry
as an alternative fuel
• Then moved to anaerobic
digestion and grid connection
• Have changed from being a
‘dirty company’ to being a
clean energy company “Long term culture change
needs long term business
engagement”
14. Betts Environmental
• Betts Environmental were looking
to install an incinerator to process
old X-ray films securely
• NISP introduced them to
Birmingham University who had
developed a new technology to
extract silver from X-ray film
• Sustainable solution, innovative
and lucrative:
• Additional Sales - £1,000,000
• Jobs safeguarded - 9
• Virgin Materials – 352 te

16. Industrial Symbiosis in Country
Benefits – Environmental, social and economic:
• Adding value to waste – reduce the use of natural resources
• Innovative solutions for problematic materials
• Encourage segregation of waste
• Stimulate the generation of renewable energy from biomass
• Reduce dependency on fossil fuels in the Region
• Increasing recycling and efficient waste disposal
• Control and efficient disposal of hazardous wastes
• Create and safeguard jobs
• Contribution to the creation of new standards and best practice
International Synergies Ltd, IFKA and Wroclaw Research Centre
are working with Climate KIC to pioneer industrial symbiosis as a
platform for innovation…
17. Climate KIC: EUR-IS
The EUR-IS project has been developed by International Synergies,
Wroclaw Research Centre EIT+, IFKA and TU Delft.
Project aim is to show that industrial symbiosis can be a platform for low
carbon innovation across the whole of the European Union:
•Develop industrial symbiosis innovation platforms in Lower Silesia, Central
Hungary and the Midlands (UK) - due to their diverse regional economies
•Netherlands CLC (via TU Delft) will transfer knowledge between the three
regions through the participation of post-graduate scholars
•Share lessons learned to other RIC and CLC locations and create the
conditions for wider deployment across the EU.
EUR-IS ‘Pathfinder’ Potential ‘Innovation’ Project Roll-out across EU27
18. Climate KIC: EUR-IS
• Promotion of new technologies and innovation to achieve both
environmental and economic metrics:
- 22,000 tonnes CO2
- 130 participants at events & workshops
- 18 scholars involved in projects
- 90 SME businesses helped
• EUR-IS teams are running:
- Networking events
- Innovation workshops
- Facilitating meetings between companies, universities, R&D
companies and innovators within the 3 regions.
19. Climate KIC: EUR-IS
• Looking for
• Innovative technologies that
can be applied to industry
• Challenging waste issues that
can use new technologies
• Research and Development
organisations
• Universities
• Private companies
• Welcome new contacts and delegates for future events and
workshops being held in Hungary and Poland to promote the work
we are doing.
• Please contact us if interested or would like more information.
20. Summary
• International Synergies Limited has 8 years experience of

Notes de l'éditeur
Not just material flows – also energy, water, logistics, assets, experts, knowledge transfer All about business opportunity
Sustainabilty requires evolving industrial systems from linear to circular for more efficient use of resources
The NISP Programme has been involved in hundreds of different projects delivering financial and environmental benefits. The first of these was actually identified at the NISP North East Launch Event in 2005. Delegates from Terra Nitrogen attended the Workshop looking for an outlet for their waste Steam, Carbon Dioxide and ammonia produced from their fertiliser plant. At the workshop they met John Baarda, a Tomato grower and began discussing the idea of using their waste steam and carbon dioxide in a purpose built greenhouse for growing tomatoes. Using the waste heat and CO2 would provide an improved growing environment. After lengthy discussions the greenhouse was built and has gone on to become the UK’s largest greenhouse delivering 12 ½ thousand tonnes of carbon savings per year and reduced the number of food miles from tomatoes no longer being supplied from Spain and Portugal.
