- ** Background to Regional Champions – 5 mins
- Introductions from each person Invite the group to reflect on their feelings about the recession and how it will affect their organisations – and those which they support. What are the key issues which will be faced in the years ahead? Cuts in funding, staff, resources, partnerships? How can ICT help to improve things in this scenario?
- The objectives of the day. Emphasis on “not designed to turn you in to a techie!” Will look at the issues you are facing and provide sign posting to areas of advice and assistance
- A look at what you get asked and how to deal with these enquiries through signposting etc.
- Working in pairs: 10 mins Yellow Post-It – Client Questions / Colour2 Post-It Personal Questions Or Tell delegates to write client or personal at top of each note Cluster on wall Common themes Key questions Which will be answered today Is there a different way to answer them? Review later on.
- Highlight what is out there Explain briefly the roles of Champions/Consortia The concept of Circuit Rider and ICT Development Workers The role that Providers of Infrastructure Support Services can play The role that volunteers can play – including it4communities Talk about the HELP CARD REFERENCE KITS The help that is available from the Private Sector it is not all bad We will return to the sources of help at the end of the session – please feel free to add your own experiences as we go through the day – good local sources of support? Recommendations from your work with other organisations and businesses?
- What is it good for? Record them – lets share those URLS! Flip Chart – Some one write them down
- So why are we doing it? Ask delegates if they have any examples where ICT usage has made a project More Efficient More Effective Made storage of/use of/dissemination of information better/easier Where it has improved communications, improved effectiveness of an event, added a new dimension to an annual report Made admin quicker/easier/ less stressful
- Start looking at how to budget for ICT COSTS do not stop with the purchase of the equiopment
- Guidelines Delegates are given a scenario and a ‘TCO Calculator’ and are required to start the process of budgeting for the ICT element of the project using materials taken from A Guide To Managing ICT by Mark Walker and produced by NCVO (Page 19) Split into 2 groups Budget lines Feedback how realistic their figures were. Are these OK for the groups they work with?
- How realistic were your figures? Did you include all of these headings? Did you have other headings or important items? How do these compare with the groups which you have worked with?
- How does ICT get funded in development work? What do funders think? Locally and nationally What gets funded? What doesn’t? Can anything be changed? What can WE do? LIST POSITIVES ON FLIP CHART. e.g. Be realistic: Promote benefits: Include skills: Don’t need detailed planning: Formula e.g.1000 for PC looks dodgy. HAND OUT “HOW TO COST AND FUND” GUIDE
- Encourage people to take ideas from Steve’s presentation and link them back to their own development worker roles – which bits did they really feel would be beneficial to organisations? Where are there further learning needs? Which bits did they feel do not apply? General reflections? How does using social media apply during the recession? What advantages can it bring? What disadvantages? Exercise – Return to ‘Happy to Help’ – what ideas would you provide to them in order to improve their plans for the year ahead?
- Find out what general planning experience people have E.g. Financial planning Skills audits? Business plans for funding bids?
- Reaffirmation of the benefits of planning and what you need to know to make sure planning is thorough and realistic
- Hand Out Exercise on doing a DIY Health Check Material used are base on A GUIDE TO MANAGING ICT by MARK WALKER Again the materials for this exercise are taken from A Guide to Managing ICT by Mark Walker produced by NCVO Pages 16 - 18
- At the end of the session find out what the exercise has made people think about ICT in their own organisations Suggest they do the exercise for real when they go back to their organisations when they have all relevant information to hand
- Led by Steve Bridger How can Social Media help organisation be more effective
- Depending on time available at the end of the session – use opportunities for Q&A session – what needs are identified to support further planning work? How do the group feel about supporting groups with ICT? Where are the gaps?
- Explain the net:gain programme and its benefits
- ** Top Tips 1, 2, 3 - 15 mins Exercise – 5 mins Give folks 5 mins to write down ways of saving money and compare with this list.
- ITQ - is aimed at IT users and not professional IT staff such as engineers and developers. ITQ is tailored to the needs of your business and your staff. It provides analysis of workforce skills such as making the best use of technology in business systems and in communication with colleagues and customers. It recognises that all organisations need IT skills but that these will vary in level and type depending on individual business needs and the use made of technology in the organisation. ITQ even allows for the inclusion of bespoke units in recognition that many employers have their own unique IT systems.
