Plastic is a synthetic material made from polymers that is widely used to manufacture products. However, plastic poses environmental problems as it is non-biodegradable and persists in the environment, accumulating as litter in landfills, streets, parks, and oceans, where it is mistaken as food by animals and can cause injury or death. With increased plastic production since the 1940s, huge amounts of plastic waste are floating in oceans and deposited on beaches worldwide. Nearly 100,000 marine animals annually are killed by ingesting or entanglement in plastic bags and other debris. While recycling could help address the problem, plastic has low recovery rates and recycling poses health issues from toxic emissions. Reduction of single-use plastics and use of bi

Plastic pollution
1.
2. Plastic is the general common term for a wide range
of synthetic or semi synthetic or semi-synthetic
organic solid material suitable for the manufacture of
industrial products .Plastics are typically polymers of
high molecular weight, and may contain other
substances to improve performance and/or reduce
costs.
Plastic is one of the few new chemical materials
which pose environmental problem .polyethylene,
polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene is largely used in the
manufacture of Plastics

Once they are used, most plastic bags go into
landfills, or rubbish bins. Each year more
and more bags are ending up littering the
environment. Once they become ,plastic bags
find their way into our waterways, parks and
streets. And if they are burned ,they infuse
the air with toxic fumes.

6. Garbage has been discarded into the oceans for as
long as humans have sailed the seven seas or
lived on the seashores or near waterways flowing
into the sea. Since 1940s,plastic use has
increased dramatically, resulting in a huge
quantity of nearly indestructible, lightweight
material floating in the oceans and eventually
deposited on beaches worldwide.

8. About 100,000 animals such as dolphins,
turtles, whales, penguins are killed every year due
to plastic bags. Many animals ingest plastic bags,
mistaking them for food, and therefore die. And
worse, the ingested plastic bag remains intact
even after death and decomposition of the
animal. Thus, it lies around in the landscape
where another victim may ingest it.

10. Since synthetic plastics are largely non-biodegradable,
they tend to persist in natural environment’s. Compared
with materials in common use such as Glass, Paper, iron,
and Aluminium, plastics have a low recovery rate. That
is, they are relatively inefficient to reuse as recycled
scrap in the manufacturing process, due to significant
processing difficulties such as a low melting point, which
prevents contaminants from being driven off during
heating and reprocessing.

12. Plastic plays villain right from the stage of its
production. The major chemicals that go into the
making of plastic are highly toxic and pose serious
threat to living beings of all species on earth.
Some of the constituent of plastic such as benzene
are known to cause cancer. Plastic resins themselves
are flammable and have contributed considerably to
several accident’s worldwide.
13. Once plastic is produced, the harm is done once
and for all. Plastic defies any kind of attempt at
disposal_ be it through recycling, burning, or
landfilling.
When you recycle a hazard , you create a
hazard.
Recycling of plastic is associated with skin and
respiratory problems, resulting from exposure to
and inhalation of toxic fumes, especially
hydrocarbons and residues released during the
process.

15. Single-use plastic bags have become such a
ubiquitous way of life that it seems as if we simply
cannot do without them. However, if we have the
will, we can start reducing their use in small
ways.
A Cloth bag can make a good substitute for
shopping. Reusing the plastic bags is another
good idea.
Awareness of the serious consequences of plastic
pollution should be increased, and also the use of
biodegradable plastics .
