A catalogue showcasing the Sustainable Design product ranges of 6 home textiles manufacturers from Mongolia, working with cashmere, yak wool, camel hair and felted wool. Includes producers working with fair trade principles, sustainable production processes, recycled, renewable or organic material, social manufacturing. The newly developed ranges are created in collaboration with designers, for season 2018/2019 and were launched at trade fair Maison & Objet in Paris and Ambiente Frankfurt early 2018. Collections include home textiles such as throws, cushion covers, and home wear such as robes, pajamas and slippers.

2. Export companies from Mongolia show they have successfully matched
‘green’ market opportunities to sustainability practices in their own company.
Each home textiles manufacturer has focused on a unique set of sustain-
ability aspects. They have made their choice from 12 different social and
ecological sustainability dimensions.
Each exporter has completed 2 workshops on Sustainable Design, and has
collaborated with an international designer and a sustainability expert in
developing a new product range. 2 well know designers, Mae Engelgeer (NL)
and Donna Wilson (UK) have given advise on new product design to the
companies. Some exporters are now using recycled or renewable materials,
others have improved on working conditions in their factory.
The 6 new product ranges include throws and cushion covers, fashion acces-
sories, and home wear and indoor slippers. Made of Mongolia’s precious
natural fibers; cashmere from goats, yak wool, camel hair and sheep wool.

3. CBI
The Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries is an
agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. CBI’s mission is
to contribute to sustainable economic development in developing countries
through the expansion of exports from these countries. CBI focuses on the
link between producing exporters and European buyers. The centre contrib-
utes to strengthening the competitive position of exporters sustainably, as-
sisting them in trading on the European markets. CBI believes export growth
from developing countries will contribute to poverty reduction. In Mongolia,
CBI is running an export coaching programme for exporters in home textiles.
The Sustainable Design project was set up in collaboration with 2 partners:
MUST - Mongolian University of Science and Technology
The School of Industrial Technology and The School of Business Administra-
tion and Humanities are the key partners of CBI in the Sustainable Design
project. They delivered expertise on practicing sustainability in the production
processes of the manufacturers. MUST facilitated trainings and their experts
provided advise to the exporters throughout the project.
MWCA – Mongolian Wool and Cashmere Association
The association has a network of over 200 producers, and is a very influential
player in the Mongolian sector. They recruited and selected participants for
the Sustainable Design project. With MUST, they co-organize conferences
and workshops on Sustainable Design to raise awareness both for producers
and policy makers.

Nans Cashmere, Mongolia

Our founder Nans is one of the few women entrepreneurs in Mongolia, a
respected textile designer and curious explorer. Together with her young
apprentices she works to deliver the best quality and outstanding design.
All product ranges are perfectly finished and are showcasing Nans’ sophis-
ticated and delicate signature. We believe that safety and comfort, personal
development and career opportunities are important, and therefore our
workers are granted with housing support, financial advise, career planning
and training.”

Munkh Cashmere, Mongolia
“Our knit textiles are unique designs created with precious fibres of
Mongolia- cashmere and yak wool telling the story of nomadic lifestyle.
Raw materials are sourced directly from the herders, whose main source of
income is their cattle: the goats, sheep, yak, camel and horse. We provide
good working conditions for our staff, and offer benefits such as education
and extra holidays. We aim to promote organic and sustainable production
through our collections combining simple knits in natural cashmere with
unique patterns in bright colours.”

Bodio’s, Mongolia
“Our founder Bodio sources fibres directly from Mongolian herders,
hand-picking the finest qualities. We take pride in using only pure,
undyed yak down. This range of knitted home wear is super smooth,
because we process all our precious fibers in-house, and we spend more
time on finishing than any other producer. We provide good working
conditions for our skilled team, offering transport and lunch on top of a
good salary. We have recently set up a production centre in the rural area of
Bayankhongor, providing work and income to the local community.”

Uujin, Mongolia
“We are a knit manufacturer using innovative techniques, specialized in
using yak down. We ethically source yak fibre from West Mongolia, a
region that is known for its mountains, deserts and very cold temperatures,
and therefore the yak fibre is particularly fine and strong. Our fibre is used
in pure form, but also we blend with soft baby camel wool or fine cashmere.
We have a small and dedicated team of workers, mostly women, who have
been with us since our establishment in 1995. Our workers are provided
with good working conditions, free transport and lunch. We assist each
team member with their personal development goals.”

Angel Felting, Mongolia
“Our handmade felted home slippers are made of renewable sheep wool,
which we buy directly from herders. Mongolia has millions of ‘‘happy‘‘
sheep freely roaming the land. We make contemporary home slippers, us-
ing traditional felt making methods. Using leftover material, we make an
‘endless’ knot or loop to decorate the shoe. We respect people, animals and
the environment, take care of our workers and their families, by providing
work and income for our local community. We are in the process of being
Fair Trade certified.”

Cashmere Holding, Mongolia
“We make woven home textiles, made of the finest cashmere fibres. Our
new range includes a delicately woven throw in off white with a geometrical
pattern, and a throw with colour blocking with a beautiful brushed finish.
We process all the fibres in-house; they come directly from herders in the
Mongolian countryside. Although we weave and knit on machines, the final
stage of the production process still includes a lot of handwork. We have
recently made improvements to the hand worker’s room. We take care of
our staff; we provide benefits such as medical checks, personal development
training and extra holidays.”
