the severe consequences of childhood
It wasn't all that long ago that obesity and all of its related problems were solely the problems of
grown-ups. In the United States, things have deteriorated over the last thirty years or so. In
addition to having more overweight adults than ever, kids and teens are developing this condition
earlier and earlier in life. For kids the most influential people are their parents but standard
awareness and education are also vital. Ultimately, however, the parents are the ones who offer
the most guidance and are the most influential role models in a child's life. What the obese child is
facing are immediate threats to physical health and mental well-being. If you go beyond that you'll
be able to see that there are a lot of dangerous health risks that can and most likely will surface
later on. So for kids it is a terrible one-two punch that is nearly impossible to beat and overcome.
Lots of scientists, researchers and professionals have been watching this growing trend for
decades. Teenagers, pre-teens and even young children have been steadily gaining more and
more weight and the consequences to their health are staggering. Countless studies and
mountains of research have been conducted with regards to this problem over the last twenty
years or so. One thing we know for certain, however, is that obesity that happens when kids are
still young carries with it serious risk factors for major diseases later on. The important thing for
parents to understand is there is more to the story. Clinically obese and overweight kids are going
to experience effects from their condition long before they mature into adulthood. For a very long
time obesity in children has been covered by the press. Even in the US where this has reached
epidemic proportions, the press coverage has made little difference.
We are not going to assign blame to people or discuss what makes people obese as we all know
this already. In the later years of a child's life they can have major health dangers or even have
their life threatened if they are obese or overweight now. Physical and psychological areas are
suffering in a noticeable percentage of this entire generation. Being overweight will make peers
be brutal, which should not have to be endured as well as being a teen. We shall have a deeper
look at what may be facing an obese child today. The nature of many weight-related health
conditions involves the element of time. This means that it can take quite a lot of time for the
major symptoms to start surfacing. Of course, particularly in the case of childhood obesity, early
years of the condition can set things in motion for problems later on. Still, a child's youth can keep
them from suffering from the sorts of medical problems that plague obese adults. Yet the
condition itself is still thought as a risk factor for complications and conditions later on in life.
Stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and liver disease are some of the
worse problems you can face.|There has been a steady increase in childhood obesity in the
United States and it continues to baffle and confound professionals of every stripe. Of course, it
doesn't help matters that almost all liquid beverages (and even solid foods) sold within the United
States contain high levels of high fructose corn syrup. But that is another issue we will not discuss
today. Obese kids sort of seem like they haven't been given a real chance at life which is really
sad. In addition to the bullying they have to endure from their peers, the kids also suffer from a
variety of physical problems ranging from back pain and arthritis to Type II diabetes. There is
more to think about in terms of this sad state of affairs and we'll talk about some of that in the
following paragraphs.
The obese child is on a terrible road heading toward terrible health problems. One problem, for
example, is fatty liver disease (which is just about the most common liver disease). A while ago
most people figured that alcoholism and sclerosis were the primary causes of liver problems.
However, we now know that it is long term obesity that most greatly affects fatty liver disease.
What usually exacerbates the overall problem with the liver is the simple fact that obese people
have severely dysfunctional metabolism. The liver further helps people by sorting out toxins and
anything else that is not good for your body. This puts a major demand upon the bodily systems
of kids and teens who are obese. The particular medical conditions that any young person, child
or teen who is obese will experience can be highly variable. Lots of different things, including
genetics, have influence here. Severely obese kids and teens are more prone to conditions that
adversely effect their bones and joints. Many times the load bearing joints in particular will
develop problems. Stress on the skeleton is particularly prevalent in the hips, knees, feet and
ankles. Kids are going to have to deal with joint pain, typically in their backs as well as constant
low swelling around their joints. Kids and teens are very commonly diagnosed with arthritis as
well. Obesity puts a lot of stress on all physical parts of the human body. If a child is obese then
this can have severe dangers to their respiratory system, giving them obstructive sleep apnea.
Problems can also occur in normal breathing as well if a child is obese.
The obese young adult or child may develop asthma due to their weight condition. Another term
often used is exercise intolerance, and it arises from the various challenges facing the normal
breathing process. Everyone has seen that obese people always seem to have trouble breathing.
This is natural for your body as it is working harder than it should be. Your cardiovascular system
is just going to get more stress on it because of this. Hypertension and high blood pressure are all
but synonymous with obesity no matter what your age may be. Some severe medical conditions
don't appear in obese children but others still do. For kids who are severely overweight or obese,
high blood pressure is a very common problem. Obviously there is physical stress that gets put on
the body when a person has excess weight but there is significant psychological stress as well.
Kids who are obese are forced to endure both physical and verbal abuse from peers. So all of that
adds up to a chronically stressful situation which, in turn, causes high blood pressure to occur.
For kids, teens and adults who suffer from obesity, Type II diabetes is a real threat. It makes real
sense that this condition would develop. This specific kind of diabetes is different than Type I
because it can be prevented sometimes. Primary risk factors for this kind of diabetes are weight
issues like obesity and a prolonged sedentariness. What happens with those who are obese is
the extra demand placed on the body to produce more insulin. This is because obese people
have more cells that need the insulin. Over time the body becomes more and more resistant to
the insulin it produces and that is when Type II diabetes happens. Medical research has been
done all over the world that proves that obstructive sleep apnea is a more common occurrence in
kids and teens than "regular" kids. This specific condition is quite serious because what happens
is that the child's airway gets blocked when he or she is asleep. Kids who are overweight and
obese are more likely to snore too but, according to researchers, that is actually deceiving. The
reason for the snoring (some of the time anyway) is OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnea. One
possible approach that has been studied is using the procedure, adenotonsillectomy, to treat this
condition in obese teens and younger children.
Perhaps one of the oldest expressions out there is that kids are cruel. Most of us experienced this
first hand in our childhoods. Kids who suffer from obesity are a lot more likely to have to deal with
lots of teasing and, often, being humiliated verbally. It's a miracle that these kids can make it
through all of those school years and stay sane. We all understand that that kind of long lasting
abuse can have severe consequences later on. The constant verbal assaults will have a
tremendous impact in areas such as self esteem, confidence and the list goes on.
The most serious risks are mostly involving the cardiovascular system. Severely obese children
are known to have elevated serum cholesterol as well as general fatty blood profiles involving
triglycerides. This is something that needs immediate intervention early in life as that is when they
start to develop. If you are a very young person then think about having to take medication to
counter your high cholesterol. If an adult starts taking this medication then there are known side
effects that they will have to accept.
The situation is only complicated for a young child or teen due to such medicines.
Just about any person who is obese suffers from a litany of psychological challenges. When a
child feels like he is under constant abuse from peers he is more likely to hate himself, not have
any self confidence and have severe stress and anxiety issues. Those are the silent symptoms
the obese child or teen endures, and perhaps even all alone. If the situation is allowed to go on
long enough the person dealing with it could even develop sociopathic behaviors. We can't find
any honest data about the number of obese high school students who end up going to college.
We are willing to bet that the number isn't that big and that there are a lot more obese high school
students than there are obese college students. Would that really be surprising since so many are
probably worried about enduring even more years of torture and abuse? There are also gender
specific problems in terms of obesity in young girls who have started going through puberty. For
example, menstrual irregularities are not unusual in obese girls and women. This issue is caused
by the interference of the female body's ability to produce normal hormones. This then leads to a
variety of issues with the menstrual cycle. The obese condition causes the females to become
predisposed to this happening. Another common result of female obesity is, if the hormonal
interference is big, the woman can become sterile. After that you have to wonder what other
female bodily processes are going to be impacted when there is this severe level of hormonal
disruption. The human body needs normal hormone production and metabolism to function in a
healthy and normal manner.
Researchers are still trying to figure out if there is a direct connection between early onset puberty
(especially in girls though boys can deal with it too) and obesity in kids. Obviously, though, there
is also some common sense in looking at what we already know. To use a couple of examples we
already know that kids who are overweight and obese go into puberty sooner and grow more
quickly than non obese kids. But it is a situation in which a clear determination of causality needs
to be made. While this is obviously not a really serious threat to the health of obesity related
conditions there are definitely issues that can be related to the early onset of puberty.|When this
is paired with the bullying and general social ostracizing they deal with at school and kids and
teens who suffer from obesity are almost guaranteed to develop some sort of social dysfunction.
Another term used is social disabilities, and there is the obvious high degree of extreme
unhappiness, depression, etc. These result in extreme stress levels which are widely known to
cause problems both psychologically and physically. One potential reaction is for obese children
to become bullies themselves. What is clearly happening is the bullying behavior is an expression
of the anger that has accumulated most likely from being bullied, themselves.|For many reasons
the prospects do not seem very promising for an obese child. When an obese young child
becomes an adult there is a huge list of health risks, as well as diseases, that the child faces. Is
there a way in which this condition can be reversed?
An obese teen is sixteen times more likely than a regular teen to become a very obese adult. This
is very clearly not boding well for those teens. Since the risk factors are actually developing when
they are young, they are looking at a severely diminished quality of life as an adult. The
socialization process and development of a person's individuality and personality accelerates
during the teen age years. In addition to those processes, a teenager's body image is at a
particularly dicey stage. Obviously an obese teen will have an extraordinarily difficult time
achieving any semblance of normal development in those areas. What happens then is that the
obese teen leaves high school at distinct disadvantages. It will be harder for most of them to
compete and succeed by normally accepted standards.|You already know that there is a horrible
social stigma that gets attached to kids and teens who are obese. Going to school each day must
be something along the lines of unbearable. A person who endures this kind of constant
psychological warfare can become scarred for life. Each person will react in some different
manner, to be sure. It is important to get counseling to deal with the ripple effect that is brought on
by these kinds of behaviors. There is a real problem with kids and teens who suffer from obesity
that affects other people too. You should also think about this in terms of the cost it puts on
society. Kids who are obese usually grow up into adults who are obese and that condition usually
costs quite a lot in medical care, time taken off of work, etc. So this really is a social problem even
though that is not at the forefront of awareness.
Obviously once obese children have reached this point, they are already at intense physical and
social disadvantages. We all know how hard it is to lose weight and that you have to be very
determined and have lots of support to do it. Parents and any friends the child has need to be as
supportive as humanly possible. Children and young adults are very resilient and can usually
bounce back once a more healthy direction is taken. Of course, this still depends on whether or
not there are any severe medical problems present.
These children need to lose this weight so we think that it is a good idea for them to have an
emergency plan of action. We know that for each of these children their situations are different.
This situation is very serious and it has so far avoided being reversed.
If you are a teen or adult who suffers from obesity, it is important to talk to someone who is
informed and qualified to help you with your condition. You need to be informed about what
makes your condition happened. The good news is that you can absolutely do something about
this and it is never ever too late to begin working your way back to optimum health. Obese kids
and young adults have often been (accurately) described as "the walking wounded." This is
because of the way that obesity scars the body and the spirit.

What happens with those who are obese is the extra demand placed on the body to produce more insulin. This is because obese people have more cells that need the insulin. Over time the body becomes more and more resistant to the insulin it produces and that is when Type II diabetes happens. Medical research has been done all over the world that proves that obstructive sleep apnea is a more common occurrence in kids and teens than "regular" kids. This specific condition is quite serious because what happens is that the child's airway gets blocked when he or she is asleep. Kids who are overweight and obese are more likely to snore too but, according to researchers, that is actually deceiving. The reason for the snoring (some of the time anyway) is OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnea. One possible approach that has been studied is using the procedure, adenotonsillectomy, to treat this condition in obese teens and younger children.
  • 3. Perhaps one of the oldest expressions out there is that kids are cruel. Most of us experienced this first hand in our childhoods. Kids who suffer from obesity are a lot more likely to have to deal with lots of teasing and, often, being humiliated verbally. It's a miracle that these kids can make it through all of those school years and stay sane. We all understand that that kind of long lasting abuse can have severe consequences later on. The constant verbal assaults will have a tremendous impact in areas such as self esteem, confidence and the list goes on. The most serious risks are mostly involving the cardiovascular system. Severely obese children are known to have elevated serum cholesterol as well as general fatty blood profiles involving triglycerides. This is something that needs immediate intervention early in life as that is when they start to develop. If you are a very young person then think about having to take medication to counter your high cholesterol. If an adult starts taking this medication then there are known side effects that they will have to accept. The situation is only complicated for a young child or teen due to such medicines. Just about any person who is obese suffers from a litany of psychological challenges. When a child feels like he is under constant abuse from peers he is more likely to hate himself, not have any self confidence and have severe stress and anxiety issues. Those are the silent symptoms the obese child or teen endures, and perhaps even all alone. If the situation is allowed to go on long enough the person dealing with it could even develop sociopathic behaviors. We can't find any honest data about the number of obese high school students who end up going to college. We are willing to bet that the number isn't that big and that there are a lot more obese high school students than there are obese college students. Would that really be surprising since so many are probably worried about enduring even more years of torture and abuse? There are also gender specific problems in terms of obesity in young girls who have started going through puberty. For example, menstrual irregularities are not unusual in obese girls and women. This issue is caused by the interference of the female body's ability to produce normal hormones. This then leads to a variety of issues with the menstrual cycle. The obese condition causes the females to become predisposed to this happening. Another common result of female obesity is, if the hormonal interference is big, the woman can become sterile. After that you have to wonder what other female bodily processes are going to be impacted when there is this severe level of hormonal disruption. The human body needs normal hormone production and metabolism to function in a healthy and normal manner. Researchers are still trying to figure out if there is a direct connection between early onset puberty (especially in girls though boys can deal with it too) and obesity in kids. Obviously, though, there is also some common sense in looking at what we already know. To use a couple of examples we already know that kids who are overweight and obese go into puberty sooner and grow more quickly than non obese kids. But it is a situation in which a clear determination of causality needs to be made. While this is obviously not a really serious threat to the health of obesity related conditions there are definitely issues that can be related to the early onset of puberty.|When this is paired with the bullying and general social ostracizing they deal with at school and kids and teens who suffer from obesity are almost guaranteed to develop some sort of social dysfunction.
  • 4. Another term used is social disabilities, and there is the obvious high degree of extreme unhappiness, depression, etc. These result in extreme stress levels which are widely known to cause problems both psychologically and physically. One potential reaction is for obese children to become bullies themselves. What is clearly happening is the bullying behavior is an expression of the anger that has accumulated most likely from being bullied, themselves.|For many reasons the prospects do not seem very promising for an obese child. When an obese young child becomes an adult there is a huge list of health risks, as well as diseases, that the child faces. Is there a way in which this condition can be reversed? An obese teen is sixteen times more likely than a regular teen to become a very obese adult. This is very clearly not boding well for those teens. Since the risk factors are actually developing when they are young, they are looking at a severely diminished quality of life as an adult. The socialization process and development of a person's individuality and personality accelerates during the teen age years. In addition to those processes, a teenager's body image is at a particularly dicey stage. Obviously an obese teen will have an extraordinarily difficult time achieving any semblance of normal development in those areas. What happens then is that the obese teen leaves high school at distinct disadvantages. It will be harder for most of them to compete and succeed by normally accepted standards.|You already know that there is a horrible social stigma that gets attached to kids and teens who are obese. Going to school each day must be something along the lines of unbearable. A person who endures this kind of constant psychological warfare can become scarred for life. Each person will react in some different manner, to be sure. It is important to get counseling to deal with the ripple effect that is brought on by these kinds of behaviors. There is a real problem with kids and teens who suffer from obesity that affects other people too. You should also think about this in terms of the cost it puts on society. Kids who are obese usually grow up into adults who are obese and that condition usually costs quite a lot in medical care, time taken off of work, etc. So this really is a social problem even though that is not at the forefront of awareness. Obviously once obese children have reached this point, they are already at intense physical and social disadvantages. We all know how hard it is to lose weight and that you have to be very determined and have lots of support to do it. Parents and any friends the child has need to be as supportive as humanly possible. Children and young adults are very resilient and can usually bounce back once a more healthy direction is taken. Of course, this still depends on whether or not there are any severe medical problems present. These children need to lose this weight so we think that it is a good idea for them to have an emergency plan of action. We know that for each of these children their situations are different. This situation is very serious and it has so far avoided being reversed. If you are a teen or adult who suffers from obesity, it is important to talk to someone who is informed and qualified to help you with your condition. You need to be informed about what makes your condition happened. The good news is that you can absolutely do something about this and it is never ever too late to begin working your way back to optimum health. Obese kids and young adults have often been (accurately) described as "the walking wounded." This is
