Luke 23:39-43
making a gathering . . . sent twelve thousand drachmas of silver to
Jerusalem for sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead, thinking well
and religiously concerning the resurrection (For if he had not hoped that
they that were slain should rise again, it would have seemed superfluous
and vain to pray for the dead). And because he considered that they who
had fallen asleep with godliness, had great grace laid up for them. It is
therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they
may be loosed from sins. (2 Maccabees 12:43-46)
Matthew 12:32
[32] And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven,
but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in
this age or in the age to come. (ESV)
1 Corinthians 3:11-15
[11] For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is
Jesus Christ. [12] Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver,
precious stones, wood, hay, straw—[13] each one's work will become
manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire,
and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. [14] If the work
that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.
[15] If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself
will be saved, but only as through fire. (ESV)
Romans 4:1-8
[1] What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to
the flesh? [2] For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast
about, but not before God. [3] For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham
believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” [4] Now to the one
who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. [5] And to the one
who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is
counted as righteousness, [6] just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one
to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
[7] “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
and whose sins are covered;
[8] blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”
(ESV)
Matthew 27:50-51
[50] And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
[51] And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And
the earth shook, and the rocks were split. (ESV)
Luke 23:39-43
[39] One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the
Christ? Save yourself and us!” [40] But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not
fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? [41] And we
indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has
done nothing wrong.” [42] And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into
your kingdom.” [43] And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me
in paradise.” (ESV)

14. Because we are grafted in, OT history is our
history.
In a similar way, we see that our local church’s history
is our history (even before we were here).
Thank those who labored in our church.
We are part of a huge epic that is moving
towards a great and wonderful consummation.
See OT Israel, theTemple, etc., as
foreshadowings that gives you glimpses of
Christ and what the new heavens and new earth
will be like.
15. We live in the “Already but NotYet”
Christ is ruling.
The final evil is to be vanquished in the future.
All of Scripture is profitable to us.
OldTestament points to Christ.
The NewTestament reveals the mysteries of the
OldTestament.
Revelation speaks to our situation now and the
ultimate consummation.
16. Have been given God’s grace.
Have peace with God.
Have God’s love.
Have been freed from sin.
Have been made a priest in a kingdom of
priests.
Christ wins in history!
We win too because of our union with Christ.
17. Persecution resulting from your faith
Suffering from a fallen world
Natural disasters
Disease and Illness
National, regional, local misfortune
Personal misfortune
Suffering from “friendly fire”
Suffering from struggle with sin
