Harish Manwani
Chief Operating Officer of Uniliver
Mr. Harish Manwani was the first appointed COO (chief operating officer) of
global FMCG giant Unilever and the chairman of Hindustan Unilever (HUL).
Born in 1954, Manwani has risen from a management trainee to the top tier of
the world’s largest consumer goods company. He has recently joined
investment major Blackstone as a global executive advisor. In the new role, he
would also the advice management of teams of Blackstone's Indian portfolio companies.
Early Life
Harish Manwani was born in the year 1954 in India. He graduated with honors from the prestigious
Mumbai University, Maharashtra; and has also earned a Master’s Degree in Management Studies from
Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. Also, he has also attended the AMP (Advanced
Management Program) at the Harvard Business School.
Career Profile
In 1976, Manwani joined the then Hindustan Lever Limited. He became a member of the board and
took the responsibility of Personal Products business as Director. He also took care of business group
in Central Asia and Middle East.
He became Senior Vice President of Global Hair Care and Oral Care in 2001 and moved to the UK.
The next year he was appointed President of Home and Personal Care of the Latin America division.
He was also made Chairman of Unilever's Latin America Advisory Council.
He became President and CEO of HPC North America in 2004.
He joined Unilever in 2005 as President of Asia and Africa division. He was also made non-executive
chairman of Hindustan Unilever.
He is also a member of the Executive Board of the Indian School of Business and serves on the
Supervisory Board of ING Groep NV.
He was appointed as the global COO for Unilever in June 2011. He retired on December 31, 2014,
after more than 38 years of service.
Awards & Achivements
In 2008, Harish Manwani received the CNBC Asia Business Leader of the year award. Also, on March
26th 2013, he was conferred for a Public Service Medal (Friends of Singapore) 2012 from the
President of Republic of Singapore in a ceremony held at the presidential residence for his immense
contribution to the economy of Singapore. Also, Harish Manwani was appointed on the Board of
Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), which is Singapore’s leading government agency for
economic strategy and planning.
