Chile took control of the island of Chiloé from Spanish rule in 1826. After years of neglect by Spain, the people of Chiloé were unhappy with Spanish governance. In January 1826, Chilean forces led by Ramón Freire y Serrano landed on the island and the local militia surrendered without resistance, allowing Chile to peacefully incorporate Chiloé into the young nation.
