1. Unit 9: Assignment BFI Video Guide to Editing
Task 1: In Pairs, edit a Video Guide that illustrates a clear and concise potted history of
technological development of editing with significant films – processes ie pre-edit Lumieres,
in-camera Meliez, cutting at bench, with splicer, joiners & negatives, Continuity with work
from pioneer editors (due 4th Dec on Blog)
Section 1: Pioneers (Use your Timeline info)
Who is this pioneer?
What films are significant to editing?
How were they editing (technology)
What Style or Techniques did they develop in these films? (ie Special Effects or
Continuity cutting between shots)
Discussion of their Purpose of editing (time, space and rhythm)
Section 2: Technological developmentof (film, tv, video and digital) editing from 1896 to
current 2015, with example clips of Films or Video edited in this way
1. Discussion of the Technology processes (how it is done, development of the format
was being edited ie film, tv, video, digital video) and why/how they have changed
(reasons)
2. Benefits and drawbacks of each Technology development
Task 2: A Video Portfolio containing found/created footage of editing techniques & transitions
with individual annotations/titles to explain each one: 180 dg rule, the cut, match on action, eye-
line match, cut-away, shot rev shot, dissolves, wipes, fades, cross cutting, jump cuts, freeze
frames, split screens (Due 11th December on Blog)
Introduction: Define what is Continuity and its Techniques, what are Alternative Techniques
(Montage, Jump Cuts) (PASS)
Section 1: Find examples or film your own, add titles to identify the terminology and define
each technique and its Purpose (Time, Space or Rhythm), and whether these are Continuity
or Alternative techniques (PASS)
Section 2: Add a voiceover script discussing how/why Continuity or Alternative Techniques
are used with clips from key films and music videos (MERIT)
Continuity: use your contemporary examples from your Timeline
Alternative (Montage and Jump Cuts) use the class examples on the Worksheet
Section 3: Conclude and justify how the Purposes of editing have not changed over time
since the Pioneers (DISTINCTION)
Task 3: Individual Continuity Sequence Edit: Practical Controlled Assessment (due 17th December on
your blogs)
