Cupcake Digital: A Company That BuildsTrust
As Cupcake Digital builds its library of children’s apps and games, the company is also
building trust – among parents, educators and caregivers.
Background:
As quickly as the children’s digital game and app market is growing, so are the
concerns of parents and educators about a broad variety of related issues. Are the
games and apps appropriate for children? Are they effective learning tools? Are
children’s privacy rights being protected? Are apps delivering positive messages?
Cupcake Digital is committed to building its business based on building trust. In this
position paper, we discuss Cupcake Digital’s focus on building trust and
relationships with parents, caregivers, and educators with our apps.
Objective:
To demonstrate how, in every aspect of our business philosophy and product
development, Cupcake Digital is building the kind of trust that will not only help
grow our business and make it successful but encourage parents, caregivers, and
educators to actively use our products, worry free.
In a previous position paper, we discussed social responsibility as one of the guiding
principles of our company. We highlighted the various ways in which Cupcake
Digital acts in a socially responsible manner:
1) We ensure the protection of children’s privacy and safety online through
compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which was
revised in July 2013, widening the definition of children’s personal information to
include persistent identifiers such as cookies that track a child’s activity online, as
well as location, personal information, photos, videos, and audio recordings.
We have taken steps such as a “gated area”within our apps to ensure kids are kept
within the app for reading, learning, and playing as intended, to prevent accidental
or unintentional interactions by children with parent-centric features.

2) By including learning moments in our storybook and learn & play apps, and by
infusing them specifically withactivities that address Common Core State Standards
(CCSS), we help prepare young children to meet the requirements for kindergarten
and first grade.
3) We rely on the counsel of educational and early childhood experts in the
development of learning elements within our apps to ensure they are age-
appropriate and offer maximum benefit to children.
4) Each of our storybook apps include 3 reading modes (Just a Book, Read & Play,
Read to Me), a Grown-Up’s Corner (offering thoughtful questions based on the story
to prompt open ended conversation), and a Common Core Corner (detailing the
educational experiences infused within the app). We also demonstrate our
commitment to parents by providing free downloadable worksheetsbased on our
apps to give parents, caregivers and teachers something to practice offline with kids.
These worksheets are available at CupcakeDigital.com/EducationCorner.
5) We have added a Spanish language option to many of our storybook apps. By
simply selecting the “Español” (Spanish) button on some of our bilingual apps,
parents, kids and caregivers will experience all text, narration, activities, and
learning exercises in Spanish. Cupcake Digital is dedicated to providing a rich
learning experience for bilingual families.
While all these steps are key to our social responsibility efforts, they also serve to
build the kind of trust that will make parents, educators and caregivers more loyal
to the Cupcake Digital brand.
Another critical component in building trust, is selecting the media properties for
app development that deliver the right kinds of messages to children. If parents
recognize that every Cupcake Digital app they buy presents positive values in a fun
and entertaining way, they can look for and look forward to each new product we
introduce.
Our selection of apps to date delivers on our promise of caring about kids:
