OSGi Community Event 2016 Presentation by Levent Gurgen (CEA) Internet of Things (IoT) is the digital skin of the physical world. It has specific requirements such as dynamicity to self-adapt to the continuously changing physical context. The world is heterogeneous and the objects should interoperate to collaborate, thus interoperability is essential. Openness and short learning curve are other requirements so that innovators (e.g. startups) can rapidly build applications with reduced time-to-market and avoid vendor lock-in. Reuse of software and hardware is also particularly important since billion of devices are expected to be deployed in the coming decades and those devices should be multi-purpose and reusable by applications from different domains and not be specific to a given domain. OSGi has – since 15 years ago – the answers to those requirements of today’s IoT. Its powerful run-time environment for the dynamicity, its service-oriented approach hiding heterogeneity, its modularity making the reuse extremely simple, and last but not least, its open approach giving the potential to democratize the IoT. The talk will illustrate the benefits of OSGi for IoT with concrete deployed examples, in particular in smart city domain in Europe and Japan via the collaborative projects such as ClouT and FESTIVAL.

This phenomenon is drastically increasing demands on APIs, data, security, and software quality, pushing every industry sector to step up its game to stay relevant in the new era of connectedness. Although IoT will make our lives simpler as Things talk to other Things and anticipate our needs, mobile apps and devices—our primary communication conduit—will continue to increase in relevance and reliance. Steven Winter shares his insights about the challenges of IoT from his experience building a quality program to support the Starbucks Card Mobile and more than 3,000 mobile apps servicing 1,500 banks and 35 million users. Steven focuses on how automated mobile testing and continuous improvement for mobile apps have forged inroads for the IoT and why software quality will grow in importance as a market differentiator.

The main driver behind this development are the possibilities of 3D printing. Additionally, companies will probably include open source strategies to manage their portfolio of intellectual assets. Crowd sourced innovation will complement in-house R&D activities. Engineers and designers will be faced with a radically new working environment and new demands on their work. 3D printing brings new freedoms in engineering and design. Open design evokes the image of the designer as an orchestrator of co-design. But brutal pressure on speed and efficiency in engineering and design might be a consequence of small batch production. And there is the democratisation of the means of production: As blogs for journalists and Instagram for professional photographers, easy design tools and 3D printers might turn into a menace for the design profession itself. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other.
