This document discusses intelligent process management through process intelligence. Process intelligence integrates automatic process discovery, machine learning techniques, and advanced business discovery technology to analyze historical event log data and generate visual models of business processes. It can be used to improve operational efficiency by establishing patterns between external and internal events and allowing management to monitor operations and key performance indicators in real-time. Process intelligence provides an integrated view of a company's performance from process perspectives and alerts management to correct deviations in ongoing processes.
2. In many organizations, business performance is measured in
terms of financial data such as revenue, profits, cash flow, etc.
However, it is not generally possible to manipulate the values
of these financial indices directly; rather, they reflect the
results of operational activities derived from the organization’s
standard business processes. Hence, addressing financial
data only, without considering current business processes,
significantly impairs an organization’s ability to improve their
business performance.
The Challenge
How it Works
Process intelligence essentially integrates automatic process discovery
(APD), machine learning techniques and advanced business discovery
technology. Briefly, automatic process discovery looks at historical event
log data and analyzes these data to generate visual models of an
organization's business processes and establish patterns linking external
and internal events. The results of these analyses can be used to
improve operational efficiency. In parallel, business discovery technology
allows management to monitor operations and key performance
indicators in real-time and alerts management of any anomalies.
The Solution
While many organizations have already implemented business intelligence (BI) solutions, these
solutions do not provide insight into underlying business processes.
Process Intelligence solutions provide an integrated view of your company’s performance from process
perspectives, and would alert you just in time, to correct deviations that might occur in your on-going
processes.

How are our processes really executed?
Most CRM, ERP or BPM solutions offer a business
process management solution, typically by letting
users define the stages involved in handling a given
document or record type as a series of statuses or
activities. The paths linking one status to another
and the business rules governing statuses and
status changes denote how the process is carried
out -- i.e., the workflow for that document or record
Process owners may need answers to more specific questions, such as:
•Where are the bottlenecks in this process?
•Are all requirements (e.g., SLA terms) being met?
•Why does performance vary from one employee/department to the next?
•Which business rules and alerts are actually in use?
•What are the actual costs of this process?
Automatic process discovery analyzes log data captured by existing IT
systems and provides answers to these and other questions. This analysis
yields the following:
• Operational data (throughput time, costs, quantities)
• Maps and animations of actual processes
• Discovery of anomalies
• Performance benchmarking
type. Over time, however, the original process may undergo certain changes in response to changing
business requirements, and these process models can become bloated with the introduction of more
and more statuses, status paths and business rules. At this point, managers may begin to wonder:

HEADLINE
Significant benefits of automatic process discovery for a
company can be gaining a multi-dimensional and
objective view of how their organization was performing
in the analyzed period, which leads to defining or
refining their operational goals. In order to keep track of
how these goals are achieved as a process is being
executed, process dashboards can be used.
•Defining of the process scope, activities, goals & KPIs
•The planned process flow is designed
•Process & business data are extracted from the IT
systems
•User interface with dashboards, analysis and reports is
designed
•Dynamic & associative discovery can be performed
Monitoring the performance of running
cases can be improved significantly when
knowing the predicted progress of a running
process. For example, what would be the
next step and when? Would there be a
delay or deviation from a goal? When would
the case end?
Predictive Process Monitoring
Process Analytics & Monitoring
How it’s done:
These dashboards enable managers to continuously monitor and adjust business processes for optimal
performance at a very fine resolution, instead of taking action only after a problem has been discovered.

Once we have our process dashboards up and running, deviations from
desired goals can be noticed easily in the gauges. Revealing and
analyzing the possible root causes can be done with our process
discovery tool. By clicking a dashboard button, the current user selection
is exported and saved in the required format.
Extended Process Analysis
Predictive monitoring is a technology that enables
operational managers and process workers to see
the forecasted progress of each open case. The
monitoring dashboard permits a high level view
with KPIs and visual indications of deviations from
goals by severity rank.
Detailed reports enable a drill down into a single
case which can be directly accessed in the IT
system.
How it’s done:
Some of the benefits:
•Process data is maintained and managed in the BI database
•The event log data of the process in question is enriched with business
data
•Analysis results enable fine-tuning of dashboards KPIs
•Process & Business managers share results and insights
•Proactive approach is replacing “crisis- management”.
•Prediction models are trained with historical process data
•Running cases data are loaded into a predictor engine
•Predictions are generated and added to the process
data
•The updated process data are loaded to the user
dashboard.

Qlik's Associative engine enables the combination of multiple data sources into a single view. The end
user can freely and interactively explore across all data without any limit, gaining insights which aren't
possible with most BI tools. Interactive dashboards and analytics applications are developed, which
guide the user to discovery.
About the Technologies
Business Discovery
Disco is an APD tool Developed by Fluxicon, senior process mining experts from the renowned
process mining research group of prof. Wil van der Aalst at Eindhoven University of Technology. Disco
is the result of ten years of process mining expertise and hundreds of process mining applications in a
wide range of industries.
Automatic Process Discovery (APD)
Nirdizati is an open-source web-based predictive process monitoring engine for running business
processes. Unlike classical monitoring dashboards, Nirdizati does not focus on showing the current
state of business process executions, but also their future state (e.g. when will each case finish). On the
backend, Nirdizati uses predictive models pre-trained using data about historical process execution.
