5. “ I statements” – these are used to avoid confrontation and to provide a win/win situation so that no-one is backed into a corner. “ I would appreciate it if you returned to your seat.” “ If you .............................., then I could .................” it is more of a request and does not sound so demanding and confrontational. “ When you ................... I will.................’” sets up a certain expectation and if repeated enough often, usually leads to the student doing as they have been asked to do.
6. Make a statement – not ask a question! A question of “Would you like to read to me?” can bring about a polite reply of “No” Statement – “Which of these two books are you going to read to me?”
