2. INTRODUCTION
Executive Daniel Sheflin has worked in the technology
sector for nearly two decades. Translating his experience
in the field to new technological projects, Daniel Sheflin
serves as chairman of the NIST Smart Grid Advisory
Committee.
Established in 1901, the National Institute of Standards
and Technology is a branch of the United States
Department of Commerce. Better known as the NIST, the
organization focuses its efforts on supporting small to
large technology projects, from building earthquake-
resistant skyscrapers to managing the global
communication network. Among its leading projects is the
Smart Grid.
3. SMART GRID ADVISORY COMMITTEE
A communication infrastructure, the Smart Grid,
also referred to as the grid, is continually
enhanced to meet the energy demands of
today’s consumers. To ensure the grid meets
standards and fulfills its mission, the NIST
created the Smart Grid Advisory Committee to
provide insight into the grid’s performance and
how it can be improved. The advice of the
committee is used to guide the Smart Grid
Interoperability Panel’s tasks and strategies.
This includes developing research studies and
evaluating standards and procedures that
impact the future of energy distribution.
