Archie‟s Commonwealth Adventure
Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games
This summer Glasgow will host the
Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
There will be 17 Sports and 11 Days of
competition. After the fantastic London
2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games,
the 20th
Commonwealth Games are set to
be big!
We hope to build on the enthusiasm for
sport that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
created and use the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 to
inspire children to make sport a lifestyle choice.
The Archie‟s Activity Afternoon event this year is called:
“Archie‟s Commonwealth Adventure”. At this event children
will be able to take part in adapted activities of the sports
played at the Commonwealth Games including athletics,
basketball, lawn balls, hockey, netball, shooting, rugby and
tennis.
In this pack is a list of the sports that the activities are based
on. It has information on the sports and local club links in
Sheffield if the children want to play more of the sport after the
event. As well as interesting facts on each sport, there are
some fun quizzes and games to play with the children before
and after the event.
The Arches SSP hope that by exposing children to positive
early experiences of sport and physical activity, they will make
sport a lifestyle choice and live a healthy active life.

What is it?
Athletics has many different disciplines but Archie is only going
to visit two of them! The first will be the relay. In the
Commonwealth Games there are four different distances of
relays. These are:
1x100m Women‟s
1x100m Men‟s
1x 400m Women‟s
1x 400m Men‟s
How do you play?
Relays have 4 athletes running as a team over a certain
distance. Each member of the team must run this distance then
pass the relay baton to their teammate. For example the 4 x
100, each athlete will run 100 meters before passing the baton.

What is it?
One of the adapted activities you will get to play is the Shot-put.
The shot, a metal ball (7.26kg for men, 4kg for women), is put -
not thrown- with one hand. The aim is to put it as far as
possible from a 7ft-diameter circle that has a curved 10cm-high
toe-board at the front.
How do you play?
In order for the put to be measured, the shot must not drop
below the line of the athlete‟s shoulders at any stage of the put
and must land inside a designated 35-degree sector. The
athlete, meanwhile, must not touch the top of the toe-board

during their put or leave the circle before the ball has landed,
and then only from the rear half of the circle.
Athletes will commonly throw four or six times per
competition. In the event of a tie, the winner will be the athlete
with the next best effort.

What is it?
Basketball is a team game and one of
the world's most popular and widely
viewed sports. It was introduced into
the Commonwealth Games in 2006 in
Melbourne and will be reintroduce into
the 2018 Games in the Gold Coast.
There are separate male and female teams though the overall
winner is decided by which team has the best average score.
How do you play?
Basketball is a sport played by 2 teams of five
players, on a rectangular court. The objective is
to shoot a ball through a hoop 46 cm in
diameter and 3.0 m high mounted to a
backboard at each end.
Basketball
Arches School Sport Partnership
Archie‟s Commonwealth Adventure
A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the
basket during regular play. A field goal scores two points for the
shooting team, if the player is touching or closer to the basket
than the three-point line. If a player shoots from out of this zone
they score 3 points (known as a 3 pointer.
The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but
additional time may be issued when the game ends with a
draw.
The ball can be moved on the court by bouncing it while
walking or running or throwing it to a team mate. It is a violation
to move without dribbling the ball, to carry it, or to hold the ball
with both hands then resume dribbling.

What is it?
Field hockey is a sport played at the Commonwealth Games. It
was originally created in East-London.
The aim of the game is to score more goals than the other
team! The team with the most goals wins!
There are 6 different types of hockey. These are: Field
Hockey, Ice Hockey, Roller Hockey (quad), Roller Hockey
(inline), Sledge Hockey and Street Hockey. .
How do you play?
Field hockey is played on
gravel, natural grass, sand-
based or water-based artificial
turf, with a small, hard ball
approximately 73 mm in
diameter. There are two teams
of 11 players including one
goalie for each team.
Hockey

Archie‟s Commonwealth Adventure
In field hockey, goal keepers are the only players who are
allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body and they
wear a helmet and pads to protect themselves. The goalkeeper
can only do this within the shooting circle (also known as
the D).
Field players play the ball with the flat side of their stick. They
use their stick to move the ball around and try to score a goal!
If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is
declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty
shootout, depending on the competition's format.

Lawn Bowls or Bowls is a ball
based sport where the aim is to
get the ball as close as possible
to the „jack‟ which is a smaller
ball.
Lawn Bowls can be traced all the way back to the 12th
Century!!
It began as a form of entertainment for Gentlemen but now it is
a sport that anyone can play!
How do you play?
Lawn bowls is played on a large,
rectangular, precisely leveled and
manicured grass or synthetic
surface.
This is known as a bowling green!
You can play single matches or in a
team!
Lawn Bowls
Arches School Sport Partnership
Archie‟s Commonwealth Adventure
Competitors flip a coin to see who goes first. Whoever wins
gets the "mat" and starts the game.
To start the game the mat is placed on the ground and the jack
is rolled to the other end of the green to be the target.
The players take turns to roll the ball as close to the „jack‟ as
possible.
If the jack is knocked into the ditch it is still in play unless it is
out of bounds to the side, which is called a "dead" end. When
this happens, the „jack‟, is replaced and the game starts again.
Arches School Sport Partnership
Archie‟s Commonwealth Adventure
After each has bowled all of their bowls (four each in singles
and pairs, three each in triples, and two bowls each in fours),
the distance of the closest bowls to the jack are measured.
Points are awarded for each bowl that is closer than the
opponent's to the jack. For example if a player has bowled two
bowls closer to the jack than their opponent's nearest, they are
awarded two shots.
Points are known as “shots”!
The exercise is then repeated for the next end, a game of
bowls typically being of twenty-one ends.

basketball. A year after basketball was invented in 1891; the
sport was modified for women to accommodate social
conventions regarding their participation in sport. By 1960, the
rules were standardised internationally.

is „male-only‟, the other is boxing.
Rugby Sevens is a variation of Rugby Union and was created
and developed in Scotland. Instead of having the usual 15
players there are only 7 players on the pitch.

Shooting is a sport which is played at the Commonwealth
Games. The aim of shooting is to shoot the pellet as close to
the centre of the target as possible.
There are 3 different disciplines in shooting. These are: Clay
Target, Full Bore and Pistol and Small Bore.
How do you play?
Clay Target
Clay Target athletes fire at moving targets flying in different
directions. A puff of dust or powder from the clay signifies a
direct hit and confirms an athlete‟s score in each round.
Full Bore
Full Bore Shooting requires athletes to fire at targets across a
range of distances in a unique event only contested in the
Commonwealth Games.
Pistol and Small Bore
Pistol and Small Bore Rifle Shooting involves athletes firing at
stationary targets across distances ranging from 10 to 50
metres.
There are separate women‟s and men‟s teams. They can either

One player hits or serves the ball from a corner of a marked out
area called a court. The court is divided down the middle with a
three feet high net.
The other player aims to return the ball before it bounces twice
in their half of the court. A point is gained when a player is not
able to return the ball at all or he hits it out of the court.
The overall goal of tennis is to gain points to win games, sets
and matches.

Archie's commonwealth adventure event pack

  • 2. Arches School Sport Partnership Archie‟s Commonwealth Adventure Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games This summer Glasgow will host the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. There will be 17 Sports and 11 Days of competition. After the fantastic London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the 20th Commonwealth Games are set to be big! We hope to build on the enthusiasm for sport that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games created and use the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 to inspire children to make sport a lifestyle choice. The Archie‟s Activity Afternoon event this year is called: “Archie‟s Commonwealth Adventure”. At this event children will be able to take part in adapted activities of the sports played at the Commonwealth Games including athletics, basketball, lawn balls, hockey, netball, shooting, rugby and tennis. In this pack is a list of the sports that the activities are based on. It has information on the sports and local club links in Sheffield if the children want to play more of the sport after the event. As well as interesting facts on each sport, there are some fun quizzes and games to play with the children before and after the event. The Arches SSP hope that by exposing children to positive early experiences of sport and physical activity, they will make sport a lifestyle choice and live a healthy active life.

To start the game the mat is placed on the ground and the jack is rolled to the other end of the green to be the target. The players take turns to roll the ball as close to the „jack‟ as possible. If the jack is knocked into the ditch it is still in play unless it is out of bounds to the side, which is called a "dead" end. When this happens, the „jack‟, is replaced and the game starts again.
  • 22. Arches School Sport Partnership Archie‟s Commonwealth Adventure After each has bowled all of their bowls (four each in singles and pairs, three each in triples, and two bowls each in fours), the distance of the closest bowls to the jack are measured. Points are awarded for each bowl that is closer than the opponent's to the jack. The exercise is then repeated for the next end, a game of bowls typically being of twenty-one ends.
