country Bulgaria.
3. Bulgarian history
Bulgaria was founded in 681
by khan Asparuh. In 1018 the
country was conquered by
Byzantines. During the reign
of tsar Simeon I Bulgaria
became one of the most
powerful countries in Europe
extending on three seas: the
Egean Sea, the Black Sea and
the Adriatic
Sea. After 167 years of dom
ination, the brothers Asen
and Petar created the Second
Bulgarian Kingdom. Our
country was extended on
three seas again during the
reign of tsar Ivan Asen II.
4. Bulgarian history
In 1396 Bulgaria fell under
Ottoman domination for 5
centuries till 1878, when Bulgaria
was liberated with the help of
the Russian army and Third
Bulgarian country was
found.Till 1946 the country was
a monarchy.
Bulgaria is a parliamentary
republic with one-house
parliament – the 'Narodno
Sabranie’ (legislative power). The
executive power is the Council of
Ministers. The head of the
country with mostly
representative power is the
President.
5. A legend says: when God was giving away land to people, the Bulgarian was working
on a field and he came last to take his part. He was known as a good and hard-
working man and God decided to give him a part of his land – the Eden.

borders the Black Sea to
the east, Greece and
Turkey to the south, Serbia
and Montenegro and the
Republic of Macedonia to
the west, and Romania to

Bulgaria has long standing traditions in providing good
education in general. Almost every young Bulgarian is
in pursuing of a higher and better education.
Education in Bulgaria is mainly supported by the state
through the Ministry of Education and Science. In the
last years there are established also many private
schools that compete successfully with state schools
but they are still not affordable for everyone. School
education is compulsory for children from seven to
sixteen years of age. The main types of secondary
schools are: general educational, vocational, language
schools and foreign schools.

• More than 40 universities in Bulgaria offer
undergraduate and graduate degrees. Bulgarian
students are accepted to them after taking a variety of
admission tests. Education in Bulgaria provides also
many opportunities for young people from foreign
countries to travel to many places of interest in
Bulgaria and in the neighboring countries, to exercise,
to make friends or just to enjoy their stay in Bulgaria.
Some of the universities have courses in English
designed specially for foreign students but if not, all
foreigners have the chance to learn Bulgarian language
at special courses organized by the Department for
foreign students in Sofia University in Bulgaria.
12. Bulgarian folk customs
and holidays
Every foreigner who comes
in Bulgaria for a first time
is really surprised of the
number of holidays and
celebrations which the
Bulgarian holiday calendar
is filled with. Most of the
holidays dating from
centuries and their roots
are heathen. They have
deep relation with the
everyday life of the ancient
Bulgarians. Most of them
nowadays are vanished but
some still remain as
“keepers” of the national
originality.

16. Beaches
The Bulgarian Black Sea coast is
380 km marvelous beaches with
fine golden sand and natural
dunes; calm and safe sea with low
sloping sandy bottom and clear
water; numerous mineral springs
and beautiful nature. The Black
sea water is amazingly smooth
and is nearly fresh according to
the Mediterranean and it is a real
pleasure to swim or dive within.
Holiday-makers have a huge
selection of activities to choose
from like yachting, diving,
windsurfing, water skiing,
snorkeling, underwater fishing
and other aquatic sports.
17. Every year the sunny spring, the warm sea water, the wide and picturesque beaches attract
millions of people from all over the world. In towns and villages around the coast are located
many seaside resorts: Albena, Golden Sands, Varna, Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Pomorie,
Burgas, Sozopol, Djuni and Primorsko.
19. The pearl of Bulgarian tourism are winter mountain resorts.
Located in the core of the Rhodopes Range, Pirin Mountain
and Rila Mountain they attract and enchant their visitors.
23. The house of Dimcho Debelyanov - famous Bulgarian poet and Oslekov's
House- where were made the uniforms of the participants in the Uprising of
April 1876.
26. Bulgarian roses and rose valleys are symbols of our country called
‘The country of roses’. Every year many people celebrate the Festival
of Roses in Kazanlak city.
