- Project began over a year ago with A hundred-year-old beach park showing it's age A beloved community park, a family park, a locals park Everyone has a story about Ala Moana 4 million visitors a year has taken a toll To ensure a healthy Ala Moana for future generations, something had to be done
- City hired BRV and team of 19 sub-consultants, 2/3 local firms, expertise across the board, for a plan Kick-off workshop with 400+ participants Public engaged in conversations, told stories, passionately instructed team on what to do and what not to do Followed by 1 year+ of public engagement, meetings with hundreds of park users, nearly 60K web interactions, focus groups with a range of user groups
- In first meeting, and subsequent outreach over and over, same issues were heard: Fix what we already have before new projects Update existing infrastructure to better accommodate existing uses Plan should respond to residents of the community Retain local charm and historic nature of the park
- In response to the public demand, City enacts 9-point plan to start immediate improvements Meanwhile, the consultant team works on long term plan to help solve bigger issues facing the park’s future
