2. INTRODUCTION
 A Yale University geology and geophysics PhD, David Lawrence, Shell
Upstream Americas former executive vice president, served on the Yale
Climate and Energy Institute External Advisory Board after retiring from
Shell.
 A past distinguished lecturer for the American Association of Petroleum
Geologists (AAPG), David Lawrence supports AAPG’s Military Veterans
Scholarships Program (MVSP). MVSP was developed to support
student veterans of the military in educational geoscience programs.
 The program has a mission to promote education and careers among
veterans in the field of geoscience, so as to help them transition to
fruitful civilian life. The program offers scholarships in amounts ranging
from $2,000 per year for part-time students to $4,000 per year for full-
time students enrolled in accredited colleges across the United States.

3. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PETROLEUM
GEOLOGISTS
 The scholarships are awarded to both military men and
women in active service and veterans who were
honorably discharged. Applications for the 2017
scholarships will be accepted from February 15 to April
15. Awards are announced on May 15.
 To apply for the scholarships, applicants must provide
documentation evidencing their military service and
honorable discharge if discharged, proof of enrollment in
a geoscience undergraduate four-year degree program, a
description of financial need detailing how the scholarship
funds will be used, a geoscience career goal statement,
and letters of recommendation from either a military
supervisor, teacher, academic advisor, or professor.
