Battle of Platforms - 34 IoT platforms 9 winners - Where are they now?
1. BATTLE OF PLATFORMS : 34 IOT PLATFORMS 9 WINNERS - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
A recent July 2016 study by Germany based analysts, iot-analytics.com, found that there are over 350
IOT Platforms on the market today. It is highly likely over 90% of these platforms will fail to gain any
serious market traction, which leaves about 35 platforms that will.
Without relying on market reports from leading IOT Analysts,¹ I wanted to share some clear unbiased
insights into the IOT AEP Platforms market that is growing at an amazing 33% CAGR. To do this, I turned
to the leading IOT Conference, IOT Evolution EXPO @IoTEvolution, and its renowned Battle of the
Platforms.
‘Battle of the Platforms’ is a live onstage presentation, or 'battle,' between the leading IOT Platforms. A
panel of industry experts selects the winners at a competition that is held in the US twice a year. In this
blog, I chronicle the winners of the Battle of the Platforms since 2012 and look at where they are now.

I hope you found this research into the IOT Platform space informative, and I am sure that upcoming
battles will reveal the next batch of IOT Platform leaders. @Relayr, @Foghorn and @Cumulocity are
possible winners of the future if they keep developing and maturing their individual platforms. I would also
like to see IOT mega vendors like GE, Nokia, AT&T, Microsoft, Cisco, Amazon set aside their large
marketing budgets and enter the battle itself. Maybe next year.
