Her Sultanic Highness Princess Fawzia
Princess Fawzia (right) and two of her sisters
She was the youngest daughter of King Fuad of
Egypt and youngest sister to King Farouk of Egypt, the
last monarch of Egypt.
She was of Albanian, French and Circassian descent (the
Egyptian royal family was not ethnically Egyptian).
Princess Fawzia was a member of the Muhammad Ali
dynasty, a family of Albanian origin. Born on November 5
1921, Fawzia grew up in royal palaces and gardens,
shielded from the outside world by an English governess.
She looked liked Hollywood actress Vivien Leigh.
King Farouk's glamorous sister, Princess Fawzia was
dubbed one of the most beautiful women in the
world; A display case holds a broach with her name

THE PERSONAL LIFE OF AN EGYPTIAN
PRINCESS
She was described by the Egyptian writer and courtier Adel Sabit, “ A shy,
pretty girl with blue eyes and black hair and “a supremely naive, over-
protected, cellophane-wrapped, gift-packaged little girl” who lived“in
bucolic surroundings, mobbed by adoring servants, aunts and ladies-in-
waiting”.
She was 17 when the match with the young Iranian crown prince was first
discussed. By this time she had been educated in Switzerland. The princess
indulged in socializing, European fashion, and had never worn the veil. But
once she got back in Egypt, her status as royal princess allowed her little
freedom. “Fawzia was in those days virtually a prisoner in her mother’s
houseboat on the Nile,” Adel Sabit wrote. “She rarely went out, and when
she did she was surrounded by ladies-in-waiting and retainers. At a time
when all other young girls were enjoying a relative freedom, Fawzia, by
virtue of her position, was closely hemmed in.”
From princess to empress to a royal forgotten amid Egypt’s
transformations.
TEENAGERS WHO UNITED TWO
MUSLIM LANDS
In 1939, when Princess Fawzia of Egypt married the crown prince
of Iran, Mohammed Reza, the teenagers united two great
Muslim lands. Each side had political and personal motives for
welcoming the union: for the Egyptian King Farouk, the
princess’s brother, the marriage asserted a constitutional
monarch’s power in a region lorded over by the British.
For the shah of Iran, formerly an ordinary soldier, the century-
old Egyptian royal family conferred aristocratic legitimacy on his
own. At the wedding in Cairo, guests received bonbon boxes
made of gold and precious stones; flower-filled floats paraded
down the wide avenues; fireworks were set off over the Nile.

Fawzia and Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. She is wearing the double row
necklace that is part of this parure in addition to a longer diamond
necklace.
The 17-year-old princess grew up in highly
developed, exclusive Cairo speaking French,
English and Arabic.
She was a knockout: a more luscious version of
Hedy Lamarr, a softer Vivien Leigh.
Cecil Beaton photographed her for the cover of
Life magazine. Her life was chronicled in
newspapers worldwide, which referred to her as
“one of the world’s most beautiful women.”

Princess Fawzia's Van Cleef &
Arpels Tiara
This elaborate tiara was commissioned for the occasion
by the bride's family. Van Cleef & Arpels finished the
tiara (and its accompanying parure of jewels) in 1938.
Made of diamonds set in platinum, the tiara features
two rows of upright pear-shaped diamonds, each
underlined by multiple rows of baguette-cut diamonds.
The design is a rather exuberant arrangement of carat
power, quite distinctly in the Van Cleef & Arpels style.
And it’s definitely overflowing with carat power: the
54 pear-shaped diamonds weigh 92 carats all together,
and the 530 baguette diamonds add another 72 carats
to the piece. Apart from this, the set also included a
double row necklace of baguette and round diamonds
and two pairs of earrings.

Asian Venus: "Life" Magazine described Queen
Fawzia of Iran, for having “a perfect heart-

blue eyes.”

EPITOME OF GLAMOUR
In the eyes of the world, Fawzia was the epitome of glamour, her
style a mixture of European fashion and oriental mystique. Her
portrait, taken by Cecil Beaton, appeared on the cover of Life
magazine in 1942.
“She had sad and mournful eyes,” Beaton wrote, “pitch-black
hair, a perfectly sculpted face and soft, graceful hands bereft of
the wrinkles of labour.”
Shortly after the divorce from the Shah of Iran, Princess Fawzia
went to the famous, French milliner Suzanne Talbot and ordered
100 hats, just because she decided to wear hats.

In 1951, the princess of Egypt attended the Jacques
Fath Couture runway show, and Fawzia and her
sisters reportedly ordered "coats, cocktail gowns,
evening dresses, fur garments and casual outfit", and
alone Fawzia also ordered a large number of formal
suits. Indeed, Fawzia was a fashionista.

  • 11. She was the youngest daughter of King Fuad of Egypt and youngest sister to King Farouk of Egypt, the last monarch of Egypt. She was of Albanian, French and Circassian descent (the Egyptian royal family was not ethnically Egyptian). Princess Fawzia was a member of the Muhammad Ali dynasty, a family of Albanian origin. Born on November 5 1921, Fawzia grew up in royal palaces and gardens, shielded from the outside world by an English governess.

  • 29. THE PERSONAL LIFE OF AN EGYPTIAN PRINCESS She was described by the Egyptian writer and courtier Adel Sabit, “ A shy, pretty girl with blue eyes and black hair and “a supremely naive, over- protected, cellophane-wrapped, gift-packaged little girl” who lived“in bucolic surroundings, mobbed by adoring servants, aunts and ladies-in- waiting”. She was 17 when the match with the young Iranian crown prince was first discussed. By this time she had been educated in Switzerland. The princess indulged in socializing, European fashion, and had never worn the veil. But once she got back in Egypt, her status as royal princess allowed her little freedom. “Fawzia was in those days virtually a prisoner in her mother’s houseboat on the Nile,” Adel Sabit wrote. “She rarely went out, and when she did she was surrounded by ladies-in-waiting and retainers. At a time when all other young girls were enjoying a relative freedom, Fawzia, by virtue of her position, was closely hemmed in.”

  • 31. TEENAGERS WHO UNITED TWO MUSLIM LANDS In 1939, when Princess Fawzia of Egypt married the crown prince of Iran, Mohammed Reza, the teenagers united two great Muslim lands. Each side had political and personal motives for welcoming the union: for the Egyptian King Farouk, the princess’s brother, the marriage asserted a constitutional monarch’s power in a region lorded over by the British. For the shah of Iran, formerly an ordinary soldier, the century- old Egyptian royal family conferred aristocratic legitimacy on his own. At the wedding in Cairo, guests received bonbon boxes made of gold and precious stones; flower-filled floats paraded down the wide avenues; fireworks were set off over the Nile.

  • 40. The 17-year-old princess grew up in highly developed, exclusive Cairo speaking French, English and Arabic. She was a knockout: a more luscious version of Hedy Lamarr, a softer Vivien Leigh. Cecil Beaton photographed her for the cover of Life magazine. Her life was chronicled in newspapers worldwide, which referred to her as “one of the world’s most beautiful women.”

  • 51. THE QUEEN’S DIAMONDS Princess Fawzia's Van Cleef & Arpels Tiara This elaborate tiara was commissioned for the occasion by the bride's family. Van Cleef & Arpels finished the tiara (and its accompanying parure of jewels) in 1938. Made of diamonds set in platinum, the tiara features two rows of upright pear-shaped diamonds, each underlined by multiple rows of baguette-cut diamonds. The design is a rather exuberant arrangement of carat power, quite distinctly in the Van Cleef & Arpels style. And it’s definitely overflowing with carat power: the 54 pear-shaped diamonds weigh 92 carats all together, and the 530 baguette diamonds add another 72 carats to the piece. Apart from this, the set also included a double row necklace of baguette and round diamonds and two pairs of earrings.

  • 72. EPITOME OF GLAMOUR In the eyes of the world, Fawzia was the epitome of glamour, her style a mixture of European fashion and oriental mystique. Her portrait, taken by Cecil Beaton, appeared on the cover of Life magazine in 1942. “She had sad and mournful eyes,” Beaton wrote, “pitch-black hair, a perfectly sculpted face and soft, graceful hands bereft of the wrinkles of labour.” Shortly after the divorce from the Shah of Iran, Princess Fawzia went to the famous, French milliner Suzanne Talbot and ordered 100 hats, just because she decided to wear hats.
