2. It sounds like science fiction, but it’s
closer than you may think: packaging
that can take on the role of advisor —
an advisor with expertise in every field,
available at any location and right round
the clock.
All this is made possible by a smart chip.

3. The chip
It’s a tiny piece of equipment, and
with time it will only get smaller – the
developers are hard at work on that
already. A chip looks like an ingenious
network of tiny wires and plates. Al the
chip needs is a little sunlight to power
it and the chip can get to work, taking
measurements and storing the data.
Chips can measure temperatures,
detect odours and distinguish between
textures, all properties that allow
information about a product to be
measured and stored, and conclusions
to be drawn.

5. The iphone is fed with information from
the blister pack and can pass this on.
The relevant information is recorded
and analysed, and the analysis is used to
improve the product and the advice.

8. Does this mean the end of the helpful
salesman or the specialist GP? No.
Happily personal contact and advice will
continue to be a vital and indispensible
resource. The chip simply makes life a
little easier for consumers and retailers!
