LOCOMOTIVES
Steam Locomotives
1804 - The first full-scale working railway
steam locomotive was built in UK by
Richard Trevithick.
Before invention of wheel, humans were severely limited in how much
stuff they could transport over land, and how far. Wheel was invented
by Mesopotamians around 3500 BC, to be used in pottery-making. About
300 years after that, wheel was used for chariot and slowly wheels became
ubiquitous in our everyday life. It not only facilitated transportation and
commerce but also paved way for inventions in the field of transportation like
the bicycles, trains, motor cars, trucks and airplanes. Here is a glimpse of the
inventions that have changed the transport system world-wide.
Incredible Inventions that changed the Transport System
STEAM ENGINE - A REVOLUTION
IN TRANSPORT SYSTEM
First Working Steam Engine
1712 - The first working steam engine
was invented by Thomas Newcomen.
Used to pump water from the mines,
it revolutionized the transport system.
Drawing of Newcomen Engine
The Watt Engine
1769 - Once while reparing Newcomen’s
steam engine, James Watt got the idea
that its efficiency could be increased
with the addtion of a separate external
condenser. Based on this, he developed
an improved steam engine. Later, it was
widely used to run factories, mills, trains,
ships etc.

TRACKWAYS
Paved Trackway
600 BC - A paved trackway with grooves
in limestone was used for transportation
in Greece.
Wooden Rails
16th Century - Horse drawn vehicles
transported along wooden rails called
wagonways were used.
Metal Rails
• 1760s - Cast iron was fixed on to the
upper surface of the wooden rails
• 19thCentury- Steelcompletelyreplaced
iron in rails.

George Stephenson
Since the early times, humans had the
ultimate desire to fly high up in the air
and early designs, such as those drawn
by Leonardo da Vinci dating back to 15th
century had flapping wings.
Key Developments
in tHe History of AviAtion
Kites
1000 BC - The first form
of man-made object,
capable of flying in the air was probably
the kite, invented in China.
