Preaching Christ - Part 3
In Acts 8 when the church was scattered through-
out the regions of Judea and Samaria we are told inverse
4 that Philip went down to Samaria and “preached Christ
to them.” In looking through this text we learn that preach-
ing Christ meant preaching the kingdom of God (8:12),
preaching the name of Jesus (8:12). But preaching Christ
also meant preaching the word of God. We know that
because Philip had been preaching and the news of his
work soon reached the ears of the apostles in Jerusalem.
In Acts 8:14 we are told, “Now when the apostles who
were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received
the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them.”
Therefore, we know that Philip was preaching the word of
God to the people of Samaria.
Preaching Christ means not only preaching about
Christ but preaching what Christ Himself had taught. This
would include preaching about baptism. We can know
this because when the Samarians believed the preaching
of Philip about the “name of Christ” “both men and
women were baptized” (8:12). Why would they be bap-
tized unless Philip had preached to them about the need
for being baptized? Later in this same chapter we read
about Philip converting the Ethiopian eunuch. “Then
Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scrip-
ture, preached Jesus to him” (Acts 8:35). Again Philip
preached Jesus to the eunuch and the very next verse
says, “Now as they went down the road, they came to
some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is wa-
ter. What hinders me from being baptized?” Again
why would the eunuch ask about being baptized unless
the preaching of Jesus had included the need for being
baptized?
One cannot separate Jesus and baptism. One can-
not separate Christ and the teaching of baptism. Jesus
had been baptized by John in order to fulfill all righteous-
ness. When Matthew records this event he tells us,
“Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan
to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent
Him, saying, "I need to be baptized by You, and are
You coming to me?" 15 But Jesus answered and said
to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for
us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him.
16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up im-
mediately from the water; and behold, the heavens
were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17
And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying,
"This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
In His teaching others Jesus commanded baptism (Mt.
28:19; Mk. 16:16). Baptism is portrayed as the likeness
of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection (Rom. 6:3-6), and
we as Christians are baptized into Christ (Gal. 3:26, 27).
Preaching Christ would require preaching the need
for faith in Jesus, repentance of sins, confessing Jesus
before men as well as being baptized into Christ for the
forgiveness of sins. It would include being a part of that
blood bought body, the church. Preaching of Christ would
also include being faithful to Christ even unto death (Rev.
2:10).
BIBLES FOR BELIZE
We are in need of large
print new Bibles to take to
Belize in March. We have a large
number of used Bibles that we are
taking that have been donated. The
humidity is not good in Belize for pa-
per back Bibles so we are asking that
members go in together to purchase
some really nice quality large print
Bibles. We also need reading glasses
from the dollar tree to take, we al-
ways are asked for glasses.
