Mission Sunday Is Only One Week Away!
For several weeks now we have been talking about
the different mission works we supported this past year
and have tried to emphasize the importance of these
works. If we are to continue supporting these great works
we need to give generously this May 7th
.
Each of us may recognize and acknowledge the
importance of those works but may still question why I as
an individual need to give so generously. Some may be-
lieve that they don’t really need to give for they believe
that others who are more blessed materially will give suf-
ficiently enough so that the amount needed will be given.
That could happen but the truth is that as Christians we
all need to be involved by giving as generously as we
can. We may not be able to give as generously as some
but we can give generously as far as our wealth is con-
cerned, and none of us are exempt from giving. Horace
Bushnell, once made an interesting list of those who
might be excused from giving to God's work and for the
support of Christian missions. Among those he said
would be excused from giving are the following.
(1.) Those who believe that men are not lost in
sin and do not need a Savior.
(2.) Those who believe that Jesus made a
mistake when He said to His followers, “Go
into all the world and preach the gospel to
every creature.”
(3.) Those who believe the Gospel is not the
power of God, and that faith in Christ
cannot save.
(4.) Those who believe they are not accountable
to God for the money and talents entrusted
to them.
(5.) Those who are prepared to accept the final
judgment of Christ: "Inasmuch as ye did it
not to one of the least of these, ye did it not
to Me."
We need to understand that giving is about faith
and not finances. Paul reminded the church at Corinth of
this by telling them that the Macedonia church gave of
what God had given them. “Moreover, brethren, we do
you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the
churches of Macedonia; 2 How that in a great trial of
affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep
poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. 3
For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond
their power they were willing of themselves; 4 Pray-
ing us with much intreaty that we would receive the
gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the minister-
ing to the saints. 5 And this they did, not as we
hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord,
and unto us by the will of God” (II Cor. 8:1-5).
This is a matter of faith. It is in trusting God to
provide what HE has promised to provide. Most people
do not develop this kind of faith because they only give
out of their abundance and not out of God’s abundance. If
we have never given liberally, as God has prospered us,
if we have never give cheerfully then we have never had
to trust in God to provide. Our faith is challenged but if we
are fearful of giving as we should, it is a sign that our faith
is weak and it cannot grow and become a great faith.
These are the lessons that can only be learned by walk-
ing by faith.
