Evangelism: Is Heaven Your Aim
Somebody made a great observation when they said the two greatest days in a person's life are (1) the day
they were born and (2) the day they find out why they were born. The same thing could be said about
those who have been born again. Many who profess to be born again of the water and the Spirit (church
members) seem to have never discovered why they were born again or have forgotten why. A number of
purposes of the Christian life could be noted, but I want to focus on one in particular — evangelism, both
world and "personal" evangelism (what we used to call "soul winning"). The New Testament makes clear
we are saved to save others and told to tell others! Before He left earth, Jesus gave what we call "The
Great Commission" (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16). This mandate, given by the Son of God and
irrevocable, puts the church in the telling and teaching and preaching business. In Matthew's account Je-
sus said, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of
all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching
them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of
the age. Amen." Christians are not all responsible to do exactly the same thing in spreading the gospel and
seeking to win the lost for Christ. But the Great commission and other scriptures remind us that the
church's primary mission is to get the gospel to a lost world. As someone summarized it, Jesus wants
every sinner this side of Heaven involved in taking the gospel to every sinner this side of hell. These
days many in the church seem to be concerned about making the gospel acceptable to people in the world.
That is not what. God charges the church to do. Our charge is the same as it was in the earliest days of
Christianity: make the gospel available to others, whether they find it acceptable or not. The Roman Se-
neca (4 B. C. — 65 A. D.) said, "Our plans miscarry because they have no aim. When a man does not
know what harbor he is making for, no wind is the right wind." Seneca's words remind us of the impor-
tance of having the right aim and goal. Without it, we are prone to be blown off course by any and every
wind that comes along. Jesus came to earth with the specific aim to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10).
The early church suffered obstacles and opposition from the get-go, but they stayed on course and "went
everywhere preaching the word" (Acts 8:4). The apostle Paul makes clear his life as a Christian was
guided by the high and holy aim of preaching Christ and winning lost souls to Him — "I have made it my
aim to preach the gospel" (Romans 15:20a). I have always liked what Luis Palau said about the church —
"The church is like manure. Pile it up, and it stinks up the neighborhood; spread it out, and it enriches the
world." Heaven's holy aim for the church is not primarily about bigness, budgets, buildings or buses. It is
not primarily about carpet, comfort, or convenience. It is not primarily about potlucks, programs, preach-
ers, powerpoint, padded pews, faddish faith, or trendy worship styles. Heaven's high and holy aim is for
the church to carry the gospel to the lost. Is Heaven's aim your aim? Think about it.

Jesus – Prophet, Priest and King Part Three
The true test of whether one is a true prophet of God is,
“Did his prophecies come to pass?” In the New Testament we can
see Jesus’ prophecies being fulfilled. For example in John 11:11
we read of His prophesying the resurrection of His friend Lazarus.
Jesus said, “These things He said, and after that He said to
them, "Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake
him up.” Jesus waited so that when He and His disciples arrived
in Bethany Lazarus had been dead for four days. After meeting
with Martha, they sent for Mary who joined them before going to
the tomb of Lazarus. After a prayer to God, Jesus then “cried
with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!" 44 And he who had
died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and
his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them,
"Loose him, and let him go” (John 11:43b, 44). Jesus also
foretold the denial of Peter (Mark 14:30, 72); the betrayal of Ju-
das (Matthew 26:23, 25) and His resurrection (John 2:19-21).
Jesus was indeed a prophet but He also served as a
priest of God’s people. The priest is one that represents men to
God. Thus in some sense he is the exact opposite of a prophet.
Priests - The Greek word for priest is hiereus and is related to
hieros. It indicates one who is consecrated to and engaged in
holy matters. The Hebrew word for priest is kohen and seems to
have originally meant “seer” as well as one who has to do with
divine things. The priest stood between man and God and speaks
for man to God. The first man in the Bible to be called a
priest is Melchizedek. Genesis 14:18 – “Then Melchizedek king
of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of
God Most High.” The priest was the one who made the sacri-
fices. In the Patriarchal Age the father of each family was the one
who made the sacrifices (ex. Job, Abraham, Isaac etc.), made
intercessory prayers and performed general religious functions
(Job 1:5). In the Mosaical Age God had a special group of
people to serve as priests. The firstborn in every family belonged
to God; they could be redeemed; it was God’s plan that they
should serve as priests. Exodus 13:2 – “Consecrate to Me all
the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children
of Israel, both of man and beast; it is Mine.” The word
“consecrate” means to “set apart for a holy purpose.” On the
same night that God killed the firstborn of Egypt, He laid claim to
the first-born of Israel. The word “first- born” carries the sense of
the “first-born male” since the word in the Hebrew is masculine.
The first-born men would serve God as priests. Later however,
the Levites would be chosen to serve as priests. “Then the
LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 12 “Now behold, I Myself
have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in-
stead of every firstborn who opens the womb among the
children of Israel. Therefore the Levites shall be Mine, 13 be-
cause all the firstborn are Mine. On the day that I struck all
the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the
firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They shall be Mine: I
am the LORD’” (Numbers 3:11-13).
Jesus was chosen by God to be our high priest. “And
no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by
God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not glorify Him-
self to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:
"You are My Son, Today I have begotten You." 6 As He also
says in another place: "You are a priest forever According to
the order of Melchizedek"; 7 who, in the days of His flesh,
when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with ve-
hement cries and tears Him who was able to save Him from
death, and was heard because of His godly fear, 8 though He
was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He
suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author
of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as
High Priest "according to the order of Melchizedek “(Heb. 5:4
-10).
