Renewal
In a world, where everything gets old…well, that’s the world we live in. Ever since
the fall of mankind in the garden, everything in this world succumbs to decay. Helpless,
we watch this trend continue. Sin brought death and decay into this world, but even more
tragically, it ruined mankind’s relationship with God. What was once beautiful and simple,
was shattered and convoluted in an instant. Like an old broken watch, mankind’s time of
nearness to God had expired.
But while the way of humanity is often “in with the new and out with the old”, this
is not the way God dealt with us. God is a God of renewal. God could have discarded us
since we no longer served the design for which He made us. But He didn’t. He believed in
us. He believed in our redemption and renewal. He believed in restoring the relationship
that we broke with Him. And when we were baptized into Jesus, our relationship was
renewed with God through the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5). That which was lost thousands of
years ago in a moment, was also restored to us in a single moment as well.
But like many relationships, what was once joyful in the beginning, can become
old over time. Knowing that God saved us from certain death can sadly become old news
to us. Our old self, and old lifestyle can creep into our lives again. And our love, devotion,
and fervor for God and His people can become stale. For this reason, as God once renewed
His relationship with us, God calls us to renew our relationship with Him and His people.
We are to continue to lay aside our old self and lifestyle, and to renew ourselves by
continually putting on our new self which is made in the image of God (Col. 3:9-10). We
are to renew our minds again (Eph. 5:23), so that we get rid of the old sin and bad habits
that remain (James 1:21). Like David, when he was seeking renewal, we should also pray
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Ps. 51:10).
To pursue renewal, we need to remember and be joyful about the awe-inspiring salvation
God gave us. As David also said, “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and sustain me
with a willing spirit” (Ps. 51:12). If we can remember our old and helplessly lost condition,
then we can find the strength in God to become His renewed people today.
Christ made a new way for us all to come back to God (Heb. 10:19-21). We must
hold fast to this new way through Christ, and we cannot do this alone (Heb. 10:23-25). We
were renewed in Christ to be together according to His design (1 Cor. 12:27), and we must
be committed to this design (Heb. 10:25).
So let us continue in God’s plan of our renewal. Let us renew our commitment to
putting sin and bad habits in our life to death (Rom. 8:12-13). Let us renew our commit-
ment to being together and worshipping together on the Lord’s day (Heb. 10:24-25). And
let us remember that the greatest renewal of all awaits in heaven for those who are re-
newed now. As God promises, “Behold, I am making all things new” (Rev. 21:5). In this
New Year, let us today renew our commitment to God and His Church and be grateful that
we serve a faithful God of renewal.
