Be Afraid, but Don’t Be Afraid?!
For many, Halloween is just an excuse to dress up and eat exorbitant
amounts of candy! But with Halloween also comes the strange celebration of
things that we fear. Whether it’s monsters or demanding little children, fears
come to life on Halloween. With the exception of Halloween, fear is seldom
viewed positively. So is fear ever a positive thing for God’s people, or is it to
be rejected as purely negative?
In Ps. 19:9, God’s Word says, “The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring
forever…” In a similar fashion, Prov. 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the
beginning of knowledge…” Even in the New Testament, Christians are in-
structed to fear God (1 Pet. 2:17). So, it’s no mystery that the Bible instructs
God’s people in both covenants to fear God. This fear of the Lord or fear of
God is consistently spoken of positively in the Word of God. But what does it
mean for us to fear the Lord or to fear God?
In Mat. 10:28, Jesus bluntly declares to His disciples…
“Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but
rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
So one of the reasons Christians are to fear God is because He is our
judge, and still has the power to condemn us if we don’t live faithfully in obe-
dience to Him. This aspect of the fear of God is more than just reverence and
respect.
And yet, Mat. 10:29-30 expresses God’s great love and faithfulness for
us and His careful attention to us in detail. And Jesus concludes, “So do not
fear…” (Mat. 10:31). Well, which is it?! Should we fear God or not? And
what should we not be afraid of?
We find the answers in 1 John 4:16-18:
“We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for
us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God
abides in him. By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confi-
dence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world.
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves
punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.”
God’s love for us is deep. Those who abide in God’s love are secure in
God’s love and have confidence on the day of judgment. And so, when we
obediently fear and love God as He calls us to (1 Pet 1:17; 1 John 5:3), then
we have no reason to fear His judgment (1 John 4:18). Be afraid, but don’t be
afraid.

It is good to be home!
In Christian Love,
Robin and Julie Kincaid
I just wanted to thank you all so very
much for the thoughts and prayers for
me and my family. I am a firm believer
in prayer and the power of God to
answer them. He has heard and worked
miracles on me. I still have a long road
ahead of me but I am healing nicely.
Thanks again!
Much love,
Jonathan England
