It’s about the Journey, not the Destination
“It’s about the journey, not the destination.” Cue the car commercials, travel
agencies, and Facebook posts. “How insightful! How profound!” some may say.
This is a popular saying in modern culture, but how true is it?
While any journey can be a wonderful experience, most journeys are about
the destination. Whether you’re going to the Bahamas to vacation or simply
traveling to the grocery store to shop, the destination is often the core reason for
traveling in the first place. On any given day, whether you drive around aimlessly
without a destination only to end up back home or travel to a destination, it usually
doesn’t matter too much either way in the grand scheme of things. But what is the
outcome of peoples’ lives if they make life about the journey and not the
destination?
“He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will
keep it to life eternal” (John 12:25). Anyone who make life in this world about the
journey will lose his life. But anyone who values eternal life more than his journey
in this world will live forever. Anyone who makes the journey of life his purpose
and destination will miss the whole point of life’s journey.
As Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the
way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For
the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find
it” (Mat. 7:13-14). A broad road allows for a more comfortable journey. A broad
road allows more freedom in the journey of life. If life is all about the journey, then
the broad road is far more attractive than the narrow road. A narrow road by
comparison is more restrictive, less comfortable, and not as freeing. So why would
anyone want to be restricted to a narrow road? One only chooses a narrow road if
the destination it leads to is important. If anyone only pays attention to the road
itself, then they will be surprised by their destination. But those who pay attention
to each road’s destination will choose the right road and destination.
As Jesus said in John 14:6, “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth,
and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.’” The narrow road through
Jesus is the only road that leads to the right destination. Anyone who lives life as if
it’s a journey without a destination will sadly miss what this life is all about.
Let us live life knowing that it’s about the destination. Let us help others see
that the purpose of life is to travel to the right destination. Let us live knowing that
life will truly begin when our journey of life in this world ends.
