Faithful to the End
Faithfulness is a rare quality in today’s world. As relationships become
increasingly temporal, the value of faithfulness rises. It is all too real that enduring
faithfulness is not guaranteed in human relationships. And yet many are mistaken
about the nature of faith and faithfulness when it comes to man’s relationship with
God.
God’s faithfulness is beyond questioning (1 Cor. 1:9), but what about the
faith of God’s people? When children of God come to faith, is their enduring faith
and faithfulness to God guaranteed – as certain as God’s faithfulness to them?
Many say once one comes to faith in God through Jesus, that faith can never fail or
die. But what does God’s Word say?
Jesus Himself taught His disciples that they must be faithful to the end in
order to be saved (Mat. 10:22). If Christian faithfulness to the end is inevitable as
some believe, then why would Jesus require it of His disciples? Unfaithfulness
would be impossible if faithfulness was inevitable, and Jesus would have no reason
to require faithfulness and warn against unfaithfulness. And yet, He most certainly
does. Elsewhere, Jesus exhorted the church in Smyrna “Be faithful until death, and
I will give you the crown of life” (Rev. 2:10b). Again, Jesus requires Christians to
be faithful to the end, which means that it is possible for them to not be.
This fact is established by other Scriptures as well. Christians can believe in
vain and end up not saved (1 Cor. 15:1-2). Jesus taught that those who receive the
Word of God can believe for only a while and then fall away (Lk. 8:13) This is
important, because Jesus clarifies that genuine belief can be temporary if one does
not survive and endure through temptation and difficulty.
Christians can end up being faithless (2 Tim. 2:13), and can become
unbelieving, thus falling away from God (Heb. 3:12). Scripture also demonstrates
clearly that the faith of a Christian is a living thing that can grow weaker and
stronger. Abraham did not become “…weak in faith…but grew strong in faith…”,
thus teaching us that both are possible in regards to a person’s faith. Faith can not
only grow weak, but it can also die without works (James 2:17, 26). We can see
clearly that faith and faithfulness are continuing aspects of a Christian’s
responsibility towards God, and that they are not guaranteed.
But in a world full of changing and unfaithful relationships, we have an
unchanging and assuring promise from Jesus our faithful Savior: “…the one who
endures to the end, he will be saved” (Mat. 24:13). If we are faithful to the end, we
will be able to experience God’s unchanging faithfulness forever (2 Tim. 2:13).

Thank you
To the congregation of Deerfoot Church
of Christ, we hardly know where to start
with our sincere thank you’s.
Your many prayers lifted to an almighty
God on behalf of our son (Dennis).
Your wonderful hospitality shown to us
through these last difficult days.
The exceptional meals you all served on
Saturday and Monday.
The list could go on. Our simple
THANK YOU seems so small for what
you did for our family. Just please know
all of this meant more than we could ever
tell you.
We also offer a very special THANK
YOU to Bro. Richard Harp. You spent
many hours with our family through the
entire week. You were there praying as
he took his final breath. That was special
indeed. Thank you for doing such a great
job setting up the service down to the last
minute at the cemetery.
May we say again: To every member of
this congregation—THANK YOU!!
May God richly bless you all.
In Christian love,
Jimmie and Patsy Washington

visitation with the family on Saturday,
March 18th from 11:00 until 12:00 at
Jefferson Memorial in Trussville. His
service will follow at 12:00. Please keep
this family in your prayers.

starting again in April. This is a once a
month study on a week night. The book

on the One who makes all things Possible
by Drew Kizer. If you are interested in
participating, please let Brandon
Cacioppo know which evening is best for
you, Monday, Tuesday or Friday.
