But I don’t want to!
Doing what is right can often be inconvenient and difficult. From youth onward,
we learn this simple truth. As children, we would honestly say “But I don’t want to!” As
adults, we usually grit our teeth and do as we must. And so, it’s safe to say that we don’t
always want to do the right thing. But when we do the right thing even when we don’t
want to, are we being pleasing to God? Our initial reaction would probably be to say
“No!” “Doing the right thing with the wrong attitude is wrong,” we would perhaps say.
After all, isn’t our attitude, not just our actions, important?
The answer may be surprising. In the parable of the two sons, Jesus tells of two
sons who are instructed by their father to work in His vineyard (Mat. 21:28-32). When
the first is instructed to work in the vineyard, he immediately refuses to comply with his
father’s instructions. But later on, he regrets saying no, and follows his father’s instruc-
tions anyway. The second son is instructed likewise by his father, and he immediately
and willfully agrees to work in his father’s vineyard. But the willful son never followed
through with his word. Jesus then asked His audience this question: “Which of the two
did the will of his father? (v.31)” Turns out, the reluctant son did the right thing, as con-
firmed by Jesus’ response (v.31-32).
Jesus expresses here, that in the end, those who do the right thing do God’s will,
even if their attitude was reluctant and unwilling. While Jesus Himself never refused to
obey God’s instructions and commands, He Himself was even reluctant to go to the
cross as God commanded Him to do (Mat. 26:39, 42). But Jesus was still pleasing to
God because He did the right thing anyway. As Scripture teaches, to obey God is to love
God (1 John 5:3). But does this mean that our attitude is unimportant, that we can serve
God with a begrudging attitude and still be pleasing to Him?!
To say that only obedience matters and that attitude is unimportant would be a
gross overstatement. On the contrary, God’s Word tells us that we are to do “…all things
without grumbling…” (Phil. 2:14). We are called to have a sincere heart (Heb. 10:22)
and a sincere love (1 Pet. 1:22). So what are we to conclude then?!
We can see from these Scriptures that there are moments in every Christian’s life
when he doesn’t want to do the right thing – even Jesus had this moment. But our lives
must be characterized by obedience and having the right attitude. There will be moments
when we don’t want to do the right thing, but we will still need to choose to do the right
thing as the first son did (Mat. 21:28-29). But we also must live a life that is character-
ized by doing what is right without grumbling (Phil. 2:14), with a sincere heart (Heb.
10:22), and with a sincere love (1 Pet. 1:22).
We cannot allow our inclination in each moment to dictate whether we do what
is right, because our desire to do the right thing is not always consistent. But the more
we choose to obey, even when it is undesirable, the better our attitude will be in the fu-
ture when we are doing the right thing. So let us always commit to doing what is right
both when we want to and when we don’t, as we strive to do all things with a sincere
heart and a willing spirit!
