Notes From the Harp
Seasons Change, But God Does Not
The end of winter reminds me of a person in an argument who slams the door to exit,
only to return exclaiming, “AND ANOTHER THING!” I find myself bringing in my
plants, putting them out, and bringing them back in again.
Seasons change, but God does not.
There was a cold night in Israel and Jehoiakim (king of Judah) sat by, warming himself
with strips of paper from a scroll.
“It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was a
fire burning in the fire pot before him. As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king
would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the
entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot” (Jeremiah 36:22-23).
The scroll that Jehoiakim turned into kindling was the word of the Lord (Jeremiah 36:1-
2). Ironically, it was concerning the destruction of Judah by fire. God gave Jeremiah the
reason for this scroll:
“It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so
that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their
sin” (Jeremiah 36:3).
God did not desire to destroy them by fire. He desired that all of the people would re-
pent. God is still “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repen-
tance” (2 Peter 3:9b). However, today, we understand that fire is waiting for all who do
not repent. This fire is unlike the fire that warms us in the winter. It is unlike the fire in
Jehoiakim’s fire pot. It will consume those who disobey eternally. Just two verses before
the 2 Peter 3 passage, we are told:
“But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being
kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly” (2 Peter 3:7).
May we never take the words of the Lord lightly, nor seek to be warmed by them like
Jehoiakim in our disobedience.
Seasons change, but God does not.

Belize Campaign 2018
On Friday the 23rd
day of March, 22 of our mem-
bers left Birmingham for the Central American country of
Belize. This is just one of many such works the church
here has been able to do since the first campaign in
1971. There have been campaign works done each year
with some years conducting two separate campaigns.
This year, eighteen of them would be working with the
church in Belize City and four would be traveling on up to
Corozal to work with the church there.
Of the eighteen working in Belize City, seven of
them were from our youth group. I’ve heard nothing but
glowing reports about them. Brother Kenny said of them,
“The youth of our group were outstanding. They partici-
pated wholeheartedly by leading singing, prayers, devo-
tionals, and helping with Bible studies. They especially
encouraged the youth at Belize City and were an encour-
agement to all of us as well. They were always willing to
do whatever was needed. They continually showed a
happy attitude for every occasion.” As a result of the
work done, there were eight new souls added to the
Lord’s church and that is always a reason for all of us to
be rejoicing.
In addition for rejoicing over this great work there
is also the joy of seeing the church there taking such a
leadership role in regard to the daily work necessary to
keep the church moving forward. As Kenny reported,
“The most encouraging aspect of this campaign is the
“attitude” that the Belize City congregation now has.
When they are together, you can just feel their enthusi-
asm! As one member told us we are so happy to be “self
sustaining”. This attitude comes from everyone contribut-
ing to their goals.
They now have plans to upgrade the outside of
the building so the youth can have some recreational
activities and they are knocking doors, conducting Bible
studies and have baptized five young men in the last two
months. When we left it was with confidence that the
eight people we baptized would continue to be mentored
in their new lives as disciples of the Lord.”
In Corozal much of the time was spent trying to
encourage and build up the brethren. Training classes
were taught by John Gallagher and Rick Glass each
night on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. There were
seven Belizeans brethren present each of the first two
evenings and six on Tuesday. Their time on Wednesday
and Thursday was used visiting some of the brethren in
their homes to encourage them. At the worship services
on Sunday morning there were 45 present not counting
the four members from Deerfoot.
For this work each member going was required
to pay for their own airline tickets and the church paid for
their food and lodging. The budgeted cost for this trip
was $18,000. We encourage all to see the value of such
a work to the church in Belize and to the church here at
Deerfoot and as part of the Great Commission of our
Lord. Please keep this in mind as you plan for what you
can give on Mission Sunday May 6, 2018.
