Satisfied With Crumbs
From our lesson last week, we found that the Pharisees and Scribes just did not get
what they were doing wrong. They seemed to be challenging Jesus at every turn, but they
received back from Him more than they bargained for. He gave them truth! They did not
accept it.
The entire interaction was witnessed by the Apostles. They even came to Jesus
with great concern FOR the Pharisees. “Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you
know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” He answered,
“Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up” (Matthew 15:12-
13). Jesus leaves the scoffing of the Jewish leadership and goes to an obscure place far
from the reaches of Palestinian life. What He finds challenges the apostles. They hear
words from Jesus that are just as sharp and true, yet the reaction is anything but similar. It
is remarkable.
“And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.
And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, ‘Have mercy
on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.’ But he did
not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, ‘Send her away,
for she is crying out after us.’ He answered, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house
of Israel.’
The apostles do not come to the aid of this woman like they did for the Pharisees.
Jesus is ignoring her and they read His silence as disdain. They could have jeered at the
statement of Jesus. One could even imagine high fives all around at the hearing of Jesus’
words. They even want Jesus to send the poor woman away! When taking the context into
consideration, the opportunity is clear. Jesus is training the apostles to leave the error of
the Jewish elite and to truly follow Jesus. They do not know, but they are about to see what
that looks like.
“But she came and knelt before him, saying, ‘Lord, help me.’ And he answered, ‘It
is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs’” (Matthew 15:25-26).
She would not take silence as an answer. She was going to hear from the Messiah.
What she heard would have offended the Pharisees. They heard much less and were bla-
tantly affronted. What she heard should have offended her. Her answer brings chills. Her
response brings clarity to where the Apostle’s loyalty should really be.
“She said, ‘Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’
table.’ Then Jesus answered her, ‘O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you
desire.’ And her daughter was healed instantly” (Matthew 15:27-28).
Her faith meant she believed the words of Jesus. She was not offended. She didn’t
need the status of the master’s table, she needed the master. She did not need the clout; she
did not even need the bread from the Master’s table. She showed what true faith is:
Satisfied with Crumbs.
