Judas 8:2
“When He had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and re-
sumed His place, He said to them, “Do you understand what I have
done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I
am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also
ought to wash one another’s feet” (John 13:12–14).
Jesus knew that Judas was going to betray Him and yet, Jesus washed his feet. To wash the feet of one’s
betrayer takes humility and love. It shows a care for Judas that he would not reciprocate. Jesus is teaching
that His act of kindness and respect was to be shared. We cannot know how others will treat us as a result of
serving them. They may never return the favor, but Jesus says, “Serve them anyway.”
Paul gives a similar command concerning how we treat enemies. You do not treat them as enemies at all!
The world does not understand this. Judas did not understand it because he followed through with betraying
his Savior.
“Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as
it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of
God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’” (Romans 12:17–19).
One might read this purely as a history lesson, but not actually believe it needs to be practiced. Since Jesus
showed honor to His betrayer, we can and must show honor to all people, including people we struggle to
get along with.
Paul went on to say something profound for how one treats an enemy:
“To the contrary, ‘if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so
doing you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with
good” (Romans 12:20-21).
Are you willing to feed your enemy? Jesus did.
“He (Jesus) answered, ‘He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. The Son of Man
goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been
better for that man if he had not been born.’ Judas, who would betray him, answered, ‘Is it I, Rabbi?’ He
said to him, ‘You have said so.’ Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke
it and gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body’” (Matthew 26:23–26).
The vital point to all this is found in Judas 8:2. No, this is not a reference to a book of the Bible. It’s a play
on words that creates a profound sentence showing the love of our Savior:
Judas ate too.
