About these instructions
The operation described here mainly refers to the use of the remote control handset (R/C).
Buttons with same or similar marking at the main unit have the same function like those of
the remote control (R/C).
Preparation for turning on
Place of erection
Ø For setting up the unit please choose a location with sufficient air circulation around. That
prevents overheating. Don’t expose the unit to direct sunlight or other heat sources.
Ø Do not pile up other units on top of your receiver. That would block the vent holes and
cause the device to overheat.
Before using the remote control
1. Please open the battery compartment.
2. Insert two batteries (1,5 V, size AAA). Please
make sure the polarity matches the marks
inside the compartment. Otherwise the r/c will
not work and may be damaged. Replace the
cover.
3. Please point the r/c towards the main unit when
operating its buttons.
The r/c works properly in a distance below 5m
and in an angle of up to 60° of the front of the
unit. No obstacles may stand in the way
between r/c and infrared sensor.
Ø Should the r/c start to work unreliably replace
both batteries. We recommend using alkaline
batteries.
Ø Batteries should not be disposed by
ordinary refuse disposal. Please lead empty batteries towards appropriate
collecting points. Never throw batteries into fire.
Ø If you won’t use the r/c for some time, please remove the batteries from the
compartment, to prevent damage by leakage.

Connecting the antenna
For being able to receive radio programmes, connect the enclosed FM-projection
antenna for FM-reception and the AM-loop antenna for medium wave reception.
FM-antenna
For the FM-reception, please wind off the enclosed
projection antenna completely. Please push the
plug of the antenna on the central pin of the FM 75
ohm terminal. If your device is later working in
FM-operation, pass the antenna in such a way that
you achieve an optimal, noise-free reception.
If you connect an outside antenna, this antenna
must be grounded against lightning strikes. It is
essential that you discuss this matter with an
antenna expert. Never try to install an outside antenna on the roof of a house on
your own. This is very dangerous and may only be done by qualified service
experts.
AM-antenna
In order to install the enclosed medium wave antenna on a flat plane, assem-
ble it onto the stand as described in the following picture:
Connect the two connection wires of the medium wave antenna with the “AM
LOOP” terminals on the rear side of the receiver. Determine the optimal recepti-
on position of the antenna.
Tips:
Ø In order to avoid disturbing noises during medium wave reception, please keep the loop
antenna away from speakers and other technical equipment.
Ø You can also connect the cable network of the Telekom to the FM 75 ohm terminal. In
most cases, it transmits radio programmes as well.
10
Connecting speakers
Important information
Ø All shown or mentioned connection cables or not included in the delivery, they are
available in specialised trade.
Ø Please switch off all involved devices before establishing the connections.
Ø In order to prevent the development of humming and ambient noises, never pass the
connection cables together with speaker or power cords.
Ø BEFORE connecting the speakers, check their impedance. Connect only speakers having
an impedance of 4 - 8 ohm or more.
Ø On the red cable terminal, the positive speaker signal is present, on the black terminal,
the negative signal is present. When connecting the boxes you have to make sure that
you always connect the positive speaker signal with the positive (+) input and the
negative signal with the negative (-) input of the box.
Ø We have installed 2 outputs for the subwoofer signal in your receiver: one speaker
output for connection a passive subwoofer and one line output for controlling an active
subwoofer. An active subwoofer has its own, installed amplifier, a passive one not. If you
already have a subwoofer but if you are not quite sure whether it is active or passive,
simply check if it has a power cord or a mains connection. If yes, it is active, if not, it is
passive. We only wanted to offer you both connection alternatives. It is not necessary to
simultaneously connect an active and a passive subwoofer.
11
For connecting the cables, remove ca. 10mm of the insulation
and twist the strands. Unscrew the desired connection terminal.
On the top and on the bottom you can now see openings in
which you can insert the denuded ends of the cable. Now
tighten the clamp again. Pay attention that blank ends of
already connected speaker cables never get in touch with each
other during operation. Otherwise, the device is damaged by
this short circuit.
Connecting audio und video devices
Video connection
In this section, you will learn how to connect DVD-players, tape decks or similar devices.
When establishing these connections, the device must also necessarily be switched off, as
otherwise voltage peaks may damage your speakers.
For the connection of DVD-players, satellite receivers and TVs, both S-Video and Video
inputs and outputs are available. If both connection possibilities are available, we
recommend you to use the S-Video connection as it provides higher picture quality. If you
connect, however, more video devices, it simplifies later operation if you connect all video
devices with the same kind of connection to the inputs of the AV-receiver. Otherwise, you
have to connect the TV via a video and S-Video cable. You also had to switch the input at the
TV if you switch to another video device at the receiver.
12
In brief:
Ø Signals reaching the receiver via a video input can only reach the TV via the output
“Video-Monitor-Out”.
Ø Signals reaching the receiver via a S-Video input can only reach the TV via the output
“S-Video-Monitor-Out”.
Tip:
When purchasing your AV-receiver, you watched out for quality. Do the same when
selecting your speaker and audio cables. Cross-section and conducting material play an
important role when it comes to music pleasure.
Analogue and digital connections
Many video components have analogue and digital outputs (e.g. DVD-players). We
recommend you to select the digital connection if possible, as only then can you enjoy DTS
and Dolby Digital Surround. With an analogue connection, your receiver can only operate in
the operation modes DOLBY PRO LOGIC II, MUSIC,
THEATER, HALL or 5 Stereo.
We have provided your receiver with connections of both
digital formats (coaxial and optical). These inputs are
named COAXIAL DIGITAL INPUT and OPTICAL DIGITAL
INPUT. If your video devices have coaxial and/or optical
digital outputs, connect them here.
Tip:
As a protection against dust, there is a cap on the optical
digital input. If you want to use the connection, remove the cap carefully. Keep it thoroughly
so that you can put it on again if you remove the optical cable from this connection again.
Audio connections
In addition to the digital inputs, your AV-receiver has
analogue audio inputs as well: AUX / VIDEO 1 / VIDEO 2 /
DVD. Here, you connect the analogue audio outputs of
your audio and video devices via RCA cable. In order to
connect an audiotape or cassette device, please use the
TAPE terminals. For a better overview and in order not to
interchange the stereo channels you should always
connect the white plug of the cinch cable with the white socket (left channel) and the red
plug with the red socket (right channel).
Tips:
Ø We want to emphasis that the digital inputs of your AV-receiver can also be used for
connecting pure audio devices.
Ø Please plug the connector firmly in the socket so that a reliable contact is established.
13
Positioning the boxes
For really enjoying the sound experience “Surround-Sound”, you should position the
speakers approximately like this:
1. TV monitor 2. Left front speaker 3. Subwoofer
4. Center speaker 5. Right front speaker 6. Left surround speaker
7. Right surround speaker 8. Listener’s position
The front speakers reproduce the front stereo effect, the center transmits in most of the
cases the performers’ dialogues. The surround speakers create the three-dimensional
sound impression by reproducing ambient noises complying with the scene. The subwoofer
produces the acoustic base and completes the sound experience.
The speaker arrangement cannot always be implemented optimally, the following points
should, however, always be considered when positioning the speakers:
The following applies to the front and center speakers:
Ø Position these speakers all on the same level with each other, best on the listener’s ear
level.
Ø These speakers should radiate in the direction of the listener.
Ø The speakers should all have the same distance to the listener’s position.
The following applies to the surround speakers:
Ø These speakers should exceed the listener’s ear level by approximately 1 meter.
The following applies to the subwoofer:
Ø In the ideal case, the subwoofer should be situated between the two front speakers. If
this is not possible, experiment with the arrangement until you have the optimal overall
impression of your system. In many cases, the positioning in the corner of the room
assists in the sound propagation.
14
On the operation
Switching on/off
Ø Connect the plug of the power cord with a properly connected 230V~ household mains
socket.
Ø Press the power switch POWER in order to switch on the device. It is now in standby
mode and the blue indicator lamp is illuminated.
Ø Press one of the input keys (Tape, AUX…DVD) or the POWER key of the remote control in
order to switch on the device.
Ø If you want to switch off the device to standby operation, press the POWER key of the
remote control.
Ø If you want to switch off the device completely, press the POWER switch at the device. In
standby operation, the receiver consumes some energy. Thus, you should switch it off if
you don’t use if for some period of time.
Volume control, muting
Ø In the middle of the front panel, you find the VOLUME controller with which you can
control the volume. Turn the controller clockwise in order to increase the volume. Turn
the controller counter-clockwise in order to decrease the volume. The display shows you
the so-called attenuation in dB (decibel): Full volume means a signal attenuated by 0 dB.
So the display shows 0 dB (or MAX VOL). The lowest volume, -80 dB (or MIN VOL) means
the maximum attenuation of the signal. Alternatively, you can control the volume using
the VOL +/- keys of the remote control.
Ø Press the MUTE key of the remote control if you want to mute the tone. Press the key
once again if you want to switch the tone on again.
Selecting inputs and operation modes
Press the key of the desired input channel TAPE, AUX, TUNER, VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2 or
DVD.
If you have selected the DVD or the Video 1 /
2-input, you must select if you want to
activate the respective analogue or digital
input. For doing so, press the DIGITAL IN
key.
Tips:
Ø Via the input keys, the audio and video signals are switched. If you choose an input that
has no video connection (= Tape / AUX / TUNER), the device does not provide a picture at
the video or S-Video output.
Ø We recommend you to reduce the volume before switching to other inputs and to then
increase it again slowly. This protects you from sudden volume fluctuations.
Ø In the display, the incoming audio format is shown.
15
If you have activated one of the digital inputs, you can, depending on the incoming sound
material, select between 5.1-channel operation and 2-channel operation (=stereo with
subwoofer). Press the DTS / DOLBY DIGITAL key for 5.1-operation and the STEREO key
for 2-channel operation.
If your sound material is analogue, press the SURROUND MODE key and you can produce
a realistic, three-dimensional stereophonic sound which creates distances, movements and
relative positions and thus invests your cinema experience with an impressing presence. If
SURROUND MODE is activated (Movie or Music), the blue ring surrounding this key is
illuminated. In order to deactivate the surround mode, press the 2CH-key.
Or you select the function DOLBY PRO LOGIC II via the remote control. In this mode, the
5 output channels are decoded out of the stereo input signal.
Experiment with these settings until you have found a setting that is in your opinion
optimal. Orientate yourself always by the format of the present audio material. Information
on this can in most cases be found on the case of the data medium.
Phones output
On the left front side of the device, you find the phones jack PHONES. Connect here stereo
phones with a 6.3 mm jack plug. The speakers are switched off. We recommend you to
switch to STEREO so that you don’t miss anything in phones operation.
Display key
Press the DISPLAY key while the device is processing external signals in order to have the
format of the input signal shown.
Dimmer
If the brightness of the display disturbs you, press the DIMMER key in order to dim the
display in 2 steps.
16
The speaker configuration
In order to receive the best sound result with your AV-receiver, the correct configuration of
the speakers is absolutely necessary. The AV-R500 is indeed flexible enough for being able
to produce multi-channel surround sounds even without center speaker, for an optimal
result at the decoding of Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS and Dolby Digital, you need, however, at
least 5 speakers (left, right, center, back left, back right). In addition, we recommend
urgently using a subwoofer so that you are able to enjoy the entire sound range modern
DVD-films offer.
BASS mode
Using the key BASS MODE, you can select the bass mode suitable for the size and
capability of your front speakers. Mode 1 is designed so that no frequencies under 80 Hz are
released to the front speakers. If your front speakers are, however, large and powerful,
select Mode 2 so that the whole frequency spectrum is sent to the front speakers, as well.
Simply press the BASS MODE key repeatedly, the selected mode is shown in the display.
Switching off the subwoofer
If you have selected BASS mode 2 and if the device is not in the SURROUND mode, you can
switch the subwoofer on or off using the SUBWOOFER ON/OFF key. If you have
deactivated the subwoofer, the blue ring surrounding the SUB ON/OFF key goes out.
Delay time
For the Dolby Digital / Dolby Pro Logic II operation, you can set propagation delays in ms
(milliseconds) for the center and the surround speakers. Thus, the stereoscopic impression
can be intensified.
If you set the delay time in Dolby Digital operation, 15 ms are automatically added to the
surround channels in Dolby Pro Logic operation. The current setting appears in the display.
Press the DELAY TIME key of the remote control in Dolby Digital operation. In the display,
the speaker channel that is to be set is shown: “S” for the surround speakers, “C” for the
center speaker. Now press the +/- key in order to set the desired delay time for the
surround channels to 5,10 or 15 ms and for the center channel to 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 ms.
In Dolby Pro Logic operation, the following delay times are available: for the surround
channels 10, 15, 20 or 25 ms and for the center channel 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 ms.
In the surround operation modes, playback via the speakers that have been set like this is
now slightly delayed compared with the front speakers. Please determine the setting that is
optimal for your situation by changing the different parameters.
Dynamic compression
Using the DYNAMIC key, you can set the dynamic compression of the sound. By
“Dynamic”, we mean the difference in volume between very loud and very quiet passages,
that means between explosions and whispering e.g. if you have sensible neighbours or if
you like to watch action films during the night, you should set a preferably high compression
(DRC = 4/4). With the setting DRC = 0/4, you receive full dynamic. Simply press the
DYNAMIC key repeatedly. The respectively set value is shown in the display.
Tipp:
Ø For programme sources in DTS-format, no dynamic compression is possible.
17
Test tone
Using the test tone, you can determine the volume proportion of the single speakers to each
other in Dolby Digital or Dolby Pro Logic II operation. Once the found balance is set, you
don’t have to change it again unless you change the position of the speaker boxes.
1. Set the normal overall volume.
2. Press the TEST TONE key repeatedly. Now, each speaker reproduces the test tone
alone, one after another, and you can control its volume using the VOL +/- keys. The
speaker that is currently active is shown in the display. It is the goal to set a volume in all
speaker channels that you consider as being almost equal.
Tip:
You have to call every speaker; only then are the settings saved.
Adjusting channels during operation
If you prefer adjusting the volume proportion of the single speakers using the audio signals
during operation, press the CH SELECT key. “L 0 DB” appears in the display. You can now
increase or decrease the volume of the left front speaker by +/- 10 dB using the VOL +/-
keys. Press the CH SELECT key again to set all remaining speakers accordingly.
LFE Trim
If you reproduce a Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 signal via one of the digital inputs,
“LFE” appears in the display. Press now the LFE TRIM key on the remote
control. Using the VOL +/- keys, you can now decrease the volume of the
low-frequency effect channel by up to –10dB. (If you don’t press any key for
5 seconds, the device exits the LFE TRIM setting.).
18
Available surround modes
The surround functions create a live atmosphere in your living room that you can otherwise
only experience in cinemas, stadiums and concert halls.
Select the appropriate surround mode according to the programme source. Please keep in
mind that all surround speakers must be connected so that you are able to enjoy the DTS,
DOLBY DIGITAL, Dolby Pro Logic surround functions. We recommend using the center
speaker for the DTS, DOLBY DIGITAL, Dolby Pro Logic surround operation.
Press the DOLBY DIGITAL key if the programme reaches the receiver via the digital inputs.
Only the digital connection transmits the encoded digital data.
Activate the DOLBY PRO LOGIC or DTS operation if you operate the device in analogue
mode. If a signal in Dolby Digital format is present, the surround mode switches to DOLBY
DIGITAL automatically.
DTS Digital Surround Mode
This device is equipped with the DTS Surround Mode. This mode
enables you to enjoy 5.1 (=6) different output channels with
high-quality digital signals bearing the DTS-brand, as well as DVDs,
Compact Discs etc. This leads to an extraordinarily transparent
stereoscopic sound experience of real 360°. Thus, DTS-programmes
should always be reproduced in DTS-mode. (DTS is a trademark of
DTS Technology, LLC. Produced under licence of the DTS Technology,
LLC.)
DOLBY DIGITAL Mode
This operation mode, as well, enables you to enjoy 5.1 (=6) different
output channels with digital surround sound from Dolby Digital
programme sources.
If you connect a DVD-player with a DOLBY DIGITAL output to the digital input (coaxial or
optical) of your surround receiver and if you play a correspondingly encoded disc, you will
experience excellent sound quality, accurate spatial representation and an optimal dynamic
range. This results from 5 independent audio channels with full frequency range as well as a
subwoofer channel that is called “LFE” (Low Frequency-only Effects channel). This
3-dimensional reproduction of the sound in the room with all its movements and relative
positions is reached by the complete independence of the 6 audio channels from each other.
In this way you are presented surprisingly real and impressive sceneries.
Some Dolby Digital programmes contain information that allows you to compress the
dynamic range of the soundtrack without compromising the sound quality. This results in
“softer” sound effects that are possibly appropriate if you want to watch movies late at
night. You will find more information on the dynamic function on page 17.

19
Radio operation
Your AV-receiver is equipped with a high-quality FM / medium wave (AM)
receiver with RDS-function. RDS (Radio Data System) is a system for the
additional information transmittal with the FM-radio programme. RDS
radio tuners are able to filter this information out of the transmitted signal
and make it useful for different functions, e.g. for showing the station’s
name in the display or for searching for stations with certain programme
contents. Not all FM-stations transmit RDS-information.
Searching for channels
1. Press the TUNER/BAND key at the device or the TUNER key of the
remote control. In the display, the abbreviation of the frequency band (FM
or AM) as well as the currently set receiving frequency appears.
2. In order to switch to the other frequency band, press the TUNER/BAND key
at the device or the BAND key of the remote control again.
3. Using the AUTO/MANUAL key of the remote control, you can switch
between manual and automatic channel search.
In automatic channel search (= “AUTO” can be seen in the display), press
the TUNING + or – key slightly in order to make the device search for
the next channel having a higher or lower frequency and a sufficiently
strong signal. Then the search stops and the found channel is played. In
manual channel search, you press the TUNING + or – key repeatedly in
order to change the receiving frequency upwards or downwards and to
adjust the desired channel.
Tip:
Ø This procedure lends itself if the signal of the desired channel is not strong enough
for being perceived by the automatic channel search.
4. Press the STEREO key at the device or the ST/MONO key of the remote
control during FM-operation in order to switch between stereo and mono
operation. In stereo operation, the stereo sign “ ” is illuminated in the
display.
Tipp:
Ø If the reception of a FM-stereo programme appears to be too noisy, switch to mono
in order to reduce the noise.
Storing channels
Your AV-R500 has 15 presets for FM and 15 presets for AM that you can occupy
automatically or manually with your preferred channels.
Automatic channel storing
1. Choose the desired frequency band – FM or AM.
2. Then press the APS key so that the device automatically saves the 15
channels with the strongest reception on the presets.
Manual channel storing
1. Choose the desired frequency band – FM or AM.
2. Set the first channel that you want to save.
20
3. Press the MEMORY key on the remote control slightly. As long as MEM is
flashing in the display (ca. 5 sec.), select the desired preset (1 – 15)
using the TUNING +/- keys. The number is shown in the display.
4. Press the MEMORY key once again to save the channel there. Repeat steps
2-4 until all desired channels are saved.

If you receive a RDS-channel, you can press the DISPLAY key of the remote control
repeatedly until
- - WAIT CT - -
is flashing in the display. After some seconds, the time transmitted by the radio station is
shown. The reason for a possible delay in the display of the time may be the fact that this
signal is only transmitted one time per minute.
21
— RT (Radio Text):
If you receive a RDS-channel, you can press the DISPLAY key of the remote control
repeatedly until
- - RT - -
is flashing in the display. After some seconds, a short text message from the station is

Programme type search
You are searching for a programme that is currently transmitting a certain kind of
programme? Your AV-R500 supports you.
1. Press the PTY SEARCH key of the remote control in order to initiate the
search.
2. Using the TUNING +/- keys, you select the desired programme type (see
list on page 21).
3. If the desired programme type is shown, press the PTY SEARCH key once
again in order to start the search. PTY SRH is flashing in the display. If
the device finds a station transmitting a corresponding programme, it
switches to this station. If not, NOTHING appears in the display and the
station set before is transmitted.
Note:
Ø Your RDS won’t function correctly if the strength of the reception of the involved station
is too weak.
Ø Not all FM-stations transmit similar RDS-information.
Ø In different countries, the RDS-function may function differently.
Memory backup in case of a power failure
We have designed your AV-receiver in such a way that it keeps the stations in the presets
for ca. 7 days if it is separated from the supply voltage. If the separation lasts for more than
1 week, all saved stations and made settings are, however, deleted.
Reset
If your device seems to be “frozen” or cannot be operated like described in this manual,
press the RESET key (in the display frame below the STEREO key) with a pointed object
(needle or something similar) through the small opening for ca. 3 seconds. This should
remove the failure; all presets and other settings are, however, deleted as well.
Tone control
For radio operation, we have equipped the AV-receiver with a tone control.
1. Press the TREBLE key and you can increase or decrease the treble by up
to +/- 8 dB using the +/- keys of the remote control.
2. Press the BASS key and you can increase or decrease the bass by up to
+/- 8 dB using the +/- keys of the remote control.
If you have used this setting und the values are thus not 0 dB any more, TONE is shown in the
display.
22
Troubleshooting
Before requesting service for this AV receiver, check the chart below for a possible cause of
the problem you are experiencing. Some simple checks or an adjustment on your part may
eliminate the problem and restore proper operation.
Problem Solution
• In stereo operation, the front speakers
right/left are interchanged.
• Mistake when connecting the speakers, please check the cabling using this
manual.
• Low-frequency humming or sizzling • The speaker cables are running parallely to the power cord or close to
another source of interference causing electromagnetic interferences – pass
the speaker cables so that there can be no interferences.
• Not all speakers are working. • Check whether all audio connections have safe contact.
• The balance setting may be incorrect, please check.
• Weak bases. • The polarity of the speaker connections may be wrong, please check.
• The tone control could be detrimental in radio operation, please correct that.
• Operation with the remote control is not
possible any more.
• Check the correct polarity +/- of the inserted batteries.
• The batteries are used. Replace them by unused ones.
• Point the control at the device when operating it.
• Don’t use the remote control if the distance to the device is larger than 6 m.
• Remove possible larger obstacles between the remote control and the device
that might be an obstacle for the infrared rays.
• Much noise, low volume or distortion in
case of radio reception.
• The strength of reception of the station is too low. Try to switch to mono
in order to reduce the noise.
• Try to pass or position the antenna differently. Use an outside antenna if
necessary.
• The surround speakers don’t work. • The surround function is switched off, switch it on.
• No stereo or surround audio source is reproduce; then, the surround
speakers cannot work.
• Check the cabling of the audio and speaker lines.
• The center speaker doesn’t work. • The center speaker is only active in DOLBY DIGITAL, DTS or DOLBY PRO
LOGIC operation. Switch the surround mode to one of these modes of
operation.
Disposal advice
When the operating life of this device has ended it must not be disposed as
domestic waste, but in accordance with national environmental guidelines.

  • 5. About these instructions The operation described here mainly refers to the use of the remote control handset (R/C). Buttons with same or similar marking at the main unit have the same function like those of the remote control (R/C). Preparation for turning on Place of erection Ø For setting up the unit please choose a location with sufficient air circulation around. That prevents overheating. Don’t expose the unit to direct sunlight or other heat sources. Ø Do not pile up other units on top of your receiver. That would block the vent holes and cause the device to overheat. Before using the remote control 1. Please open the battery compartment. 2. Insert two batteries (1,5 V, size AAA). Please make sure the polarity matches the marks inside the compartment. Otherwise the r/c will not work and may be damaged. Replace the cover. 3. Please point the r/c towards the main unit when operating its buttons. The r/c works properly in a distance below 5m and in an angle of up to 60° of the front of the unit. No obstacles may stand in the way between r/c and infrared sensor. Ø Should the r/c start to work unreliably replace both batteries. We recommend using alkaline batteries. Ø Batteries should not be disposed by ordinary refuse disposal. Please lead empty batteries towards appropriate collecting points. Never throw batteries into fire. Ø If you won’t use the r/c for some time, please remove the batteries from the compartment, to prevent damage by leakage. 5

  • 10. Connecting the antenna For being able to receive radio programmes, connect the enclosed FM-projection antenna for FM-reception and the AM-loop antenna for medium wave reception. FM-antenna For the FM-reception, please wind off the enclosed projection antenna completely. Please push the plug of the antenna on the central pin of the FM 75 ohm terminal. If your device is later working in FM-operation, pass the antenna in such a way that you achieve an optimal, noise-free reception. If you connect an outside antenna, this antenna must be grounded against lightning strikes. It is essential that you discuss this matter with an antenna expert. Never try to install an outside antenna on the roof of a house on your own. This is very dangerous and may only be done by qualified service experts. AM-antenna In order to install the enclosed medium wave antenna on a flat plane, assem- ble it onto the stand as described in the following picture: Connect the two connection wires of the medium wave antenna with the “AM LOOP” terminals on the rear side of the receiver. Determine the optimal recepti- on position of the antenna. Tips: Ø In order to avoid disturbing noises during medium wave reception, please keep the loop antenna away from speakers and other technical equipment. Ø You can also connect the cable network of the Telekom to the FM 75 ohm terminal. In most cases, it transmits radio programmes as well. 10
  • 11. Connecting speakers Important information Ø All shown or mentioned connection cables or not included in the delivery, they are available in specialised trade. Ø Please switch off all involved devices before establishing the connections. Ø In order to prevent the development of humming and ambient noises, never pass the connection cables together with speaker or power cords. Ø BEFORE connecting the speakers, check their impedance. Connect only speakers having an impedance of 4 - 8 ohm or more. Ø On the red cable terminal, the positive speaker signal is present, on the black terminal, the negative signal is present. When connecting the boxes you have to make sure that you always connect the positive speaker signal with the positive (+) input and the negative signal with the negative (-) input of the box. Ø We have installed 2 outputs for the subwoofer signal in your receiver: one speaker output for connection a passive subwoofer and one line output for controlling an active subwoofer. An active subwoofer has its own, installed amplifier, a passive one not. If you already have a subwoofer but if you are not quite sure whether it is active or passive, simply check if it has a power cord or a mains connection. If yes, it is active, if not, it is passive. We only wanted to offer you both connection alternatives. It is not necessary to simultaneously connect an active and a passive subwoofer. 11
  • 12. For connecting the cables, remove ca. 10mm of the insulation and twist the strands. Unscrew the desired connection terminal. On the top and on the bottom you can now see openings in which you can insert the denuded ends of the cable. Now tighten the clamp again. Pay attention that blank ends of already connected speaker cables never get in touch with each other during operation. Otherwise, the device is damaged by this short circuit. Connecting audio und video devices Video connection In this section, you will learn how to connect DVD-players, tape decks or similar devices. When establishing these connections, the device must also necessarily be switched off, as otherwise voltage peaks may damage your speakers. For the connection of DVD-players, satellite receivers and TVs, both S-Video and Video inputs and outputs are available. If both connection possibilities are available, we recommend you to use the S-Video connection as it provides higher picture quality. If you connect, however, more video devices, it simplifies later operation if you connect all video devices with the same kind of connection to the inputs of the AV-receiver. Otherwise, you have to connect the TV via a video and S-Video cable. You also had to switch the input at the TV if you switch to another video device at the receiver. 12
  • 13. In brief: Ø Signals reaching the receiver via a video input can only reach the TV via the output “Video-Monitor-Out”. Ø Signals reaching the receiver via a S-Video input can only reach the TV via the output “S-Video-Monitor-Out”. Tip: When purchasing your AV-receiver, you watched out for quality. Do the same when selecting your speaker and audio cables. Cross-section and conducting material play an important role when it comes to music pleasure. Analogue and digital connections Many video components have analogue and digital outputs (e.g. DVD-players). We recommend you to select the digital connection if possible, as only then can you enjoy DTS and Dolby Digital Surround. With an analogue connection, your receiver can only operate in the operation modes DOLBY PRO LOGIC II, MUSIC, THEATER, HALL or 5 Stereo. We have provided your receiver with connections of both digital formats (coaxial and optical). These inputs are named COAXIAL DIGITAL INPUT and OPTICAL DIGITAL INPUT. If your video devices have coaxial and/or optical digital outputs, connect them here. Tip: As a protection against dust, there is a cap on the optical digital input. If you want to use the connection, remove the cap carefully. Keep it thoroughly so that you can put it on again if you remove the optical cable from this connection again. Audio connections In addition to the digital inputs, your AV-receiver has analogue audio inputs as well: AUX / VIDEO 1 / VIDEO 2 / DVD. Here, you connect the analogue audio outputs of your audio and video devices via RCA cable. In order to connect an audiotape or cassette device, please use the TAPE terminals. For a better overview and in order not to interchange the stereo channels you should always connect the white plug of the cinch cable with the white socket (left channel) and the red plug with the red socket (right channel). Tips: Ø We want to emphasis that the digital inputs of your AV-receiver can also be used for connecting pure audio devices. Ø Please plug the connector firmly in the socket so that a reliable contact is established. 13
  • 14. Positioning the boxes For really enjoying the sound experience “Surround-Sound”, you should position the speakers approximately like this: 1. TV monitor 2. Left front speaker 3. Subwoofer 4. Center speaker 5. Right front speaker 6. Left surround speaker 7. Right surround speaker 8. Listener’s position The front speakers reproduce the front stereo effect, the center transmits in most of the cases the performers’ dialogues. The surround speakers create the three-dimensional sound impression by reproducing ambient noises complying with the scene. The subwoofer produces the acoustic base and completes the sound experience. The speaker arrangement cannot always be implemented optimally, the following points should, however, always be considered when positioning the speakers: The following applies to the front and center speakers: Ø Position these speakers all on the same level with each other, best on the listener’s ear level. Ø These speakers should radiate in the direction of the listener. Ø The speakers should all have the same distance to the listener’s position. The following applies to the surround speakers: Ø These speakers should exceed the listener’s ear level by approximately 1 meter. The following applies to the subwoofer: Ø In the ideal case, the subwoofer should be situated between the two front speakers. If this is not possible, experiment with the arrangement until you have the optimal overall impression of your system. In many cases, the positioning in the corner of the room assists in the sound propagation. 14
  • 15. On the operation Switching on/off Ø Connect the plug of the power cord with a properly connected 230V~ household mains socket. Ø Press the power switch POWER in order to switch on the device. It is now in standby mode and the blue indicator lamp is illuminated. Ø Press one of the input keys (Tape, AUX…DVD) or the POWER key of the remote control in order to switch on the device. Ø If you want to switch off the device to standby operation, press the POWER key of the remote control. Ø If you want to switch off the device completely, press the POWER switch at the device. In standby operation, the receiver consumes some energy. Thus, you should switch it off if you don’t use if for some period of time. Volume control, muting Ø In the middle of the front panel, you find the VOLUME controller with which you can control the volume. Turn the controller clockwise in order to increase the volume. Turn the controller counter-clockwise in order to decrease the volume. The display shows you the so-called attenuation in dB (decibel): Full volume means a signal attenuated by 0 dB. So the display shows 0 dB (or MAX VOL). The lowest volume, -80 dB (or MIN VOL) means the maximum attenuation of the signal. Alternatively, you can control the volume using the VOL +/- keys of the remote control. Ø Press the MUTE key of the remote control if you want to mute the tone. Press the key once again if you want to switch the tone on again. Selecting inputs and operation modes Press the key of the desired input channel TAPE, AUX, TUNER, VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2 or DVD. If you have selected the DVD or the Video 1 / 2-input, you must select if you want to activate the respective analogue or digital input. For doing so, press the DIGITAL IN key. Tips: Ø Via the input keys, the audio and video signals are switched. If you choose an input that has no video connection (= Tape / AUX / TUNER), the device does not provide a picture at the video or S-Video output. Ø We recommend you to reduce the volume before switching to other inputs and to then increase it again slowly. This protects you from sudden volume fluctuations. Ø In the display, the incoming audio format is shown. 15
  • 16. If you have activated one of the digital inputs, you can, depending on the incoming sound material, select between 5.1-channel operation and 2-channel operation (=stereo with subwoofer). Press the DTS / DOLBY DIGITAL key for 5.1-operation and the STEREO key for 2-channel operation. If your sound material is analogue, press the SURROUND MODE key and you can produce a realistic, three-dimensional stereophonic sound which creates distances, movements and relative positions and thus invests your cinema experience with an impressing presence. If SURROUND MODE is activated (Movie or Music), the blue ring surrounding this key is illuminated. In order to deactivate the surround mode, press the 2CH-key. Or you select the function DOLBY PRO LOGIC II via the remote control. In this mode, the 5 output channels are decoded out of the stereo input signal. Experiment with these settings until you have found a setting that is in your opinion optimal. Orientate yourself always by the format of the present audio material. Information on this can in most cases be found on the case of the data medium. Phones output On the left front side of the device, you find the phones jack PHONES. Connect here stereo phones with a 6.3 mm jack plug. The speakers are switched off. We recommend you to switch to STEREO so that you don’t miss anything in phones operation. Display key Press the DISPLAY key while the device is processing external signals in order to have the format of the input signal shown. Dimmer If the brightness of the display disturbs you, press the DIMMER key in order to dim the display in 2 steps. 16
  • 17. The speaker configuration In order to receive the best sound result with your AV-receiver, the correct configuration of the speakers is absolutely necessary. The AV-R500 is indeed flexible enough for being able to produce multi-channel surround sounds even without center speaker, for an optimal result at the decoding of Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS and Dolby Digital, you need, however, at least 5 speakers (left, right, center, back left, back right). In addition, we recommend urgently using a subwoofer so that you are able to enjoy the entire sound range modern DVD-films offer. BASS mode Using the key BASS MODE, you can select the bass mode suitable for the size and capability of your front speakers. Mode 1 is designed so that no frequencies under 80 Hz are released to the front speakers. If your front speakers are, however, large and powerful, select Mode 2 so that the whole frequency spectrum is sent to the front speakers, as well. Simply press the BASS MODE key repeatedly, the selected mode is shown in the display. Switching off the subwoofer If you have selected BASS mode 2 and if the device is not in the SURROUND mode, you can switch the subwoofer on or off using the SUBWOOFER ON/OFF key. If you have deactivated the subwoofer, the blue ring surrounding the SUB ON/OFF key goes out. Delay time For the Dolby Digital / Dolby Pro Logic II operation, you can set propagation delays in ms (milliseconds) for the center and the surround speakers. Thus, the stereoscopic impression can be intensified. If you set the delay time in Dolby Digital operation, 15 ms are automatically added to the surround channels in Dolby Pro Logic operation. The current setting appears in the display. Press the DELAY TIME key of the remote control in Dolby Digital operation. In the display, the speaker channel that is to be set is shown: “S” for the surround speakers, “C” for the center speaker. Now press the +/- key in order to set the desired delay time for the surround channels to 5,10 or 15 ms and for the center channel to 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 ms. In Dolby Pro Logic operation, the following delay times are available: for the surround channels 10, 15, 20 or 25 ms and for the center channel 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 ms. In the surround operation modes, playback via the speakers that have been set like this is now slightly delayed compared with the front speakers. Please determine the setting that is optimal for your situation by changing the different parameters. Dynamic compression Using the DYNAMIC key, you can set the dynamic compression of the sound. By “Dynamic”, we mean the difference in volume between very loud and very quiet passages, that means between explosions and whispering e.g. if you have sensible neighbours or if you like to watch action films during the night, you should set a preferably high compression (DRC = 4/4). With the setting DRC = 0/4, you receive full dynamic. Simply press the DYNAMIC key repeatedly. The respectively set value is shown in the display. Tipp: Ø For programme sources in DTS-format, no dynamic compression is possible. 17
  • 18. Test tone Using the test tone, you can determine the volume proportion of the single speakers to each other in Dolby Digital or Dolby Pro Logic II operation. Once the found balance is set, you don’t have to change it again unless you change the position of the speaker boxes. 1. Set the normal overall volume. 2. Press the TEST TONE key repeatedly. Now, each speaker reproduces the test tone alone, one after another, and you can control its volume using the VOL +/- keys. The speaker that is currently active is shown in the display. It is the goal to set a volume in all speaker channels that you consider as being almost equal. Tip: You have to call every speaker; only then are the settings saved. Adjusting channels during operation If you prefer adjusting the volume proportion of the single speakers using the audio signals during operation, press the CH SELECT key. “L 0 DB” appears in the display. You can now increase or decrease the volume of the left front speaker by +/- 10 dB using the VOL +/- keys. Press the CH SELECT key again to set all remaining speakers accordingly. LFE Trim If you reproduce a Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 signal via one of the digital inputs, “LFE” appears in the display. Press now the LFE TRIM key on the remote control. Using the VOL +/- keys, you can now decrease the volume of the low-frequency effect channel by up to –10dB. (If you don’t press any key for 5 seconds, the device exits the LFE TRIM setting.). 18
  • 19. Available surround modes The surround functions create a live atmosphere in your living room that you can otherwise only experience in cinemas, stadiums and concert halls. Select the appropriate surround mode according to the programme source. Please keep in mind that all surround speakers must be connected so that you are able to enjoy the DTS, DOLBY DIGITAL, Dolby Pro Logic surround functions. We recommend using the center speaker for the DTS, DOLBY DIGITAL, Dolby Pro Logic surround operation. Press the DOLBY DIGITAL key if the programme reaches the receiver via the digital inputs. Only the digital connection transmits the encoded digital data. Activate the DOLBY PRO LOGIC or DTS operation if you operate the device in analogue mode. If a signal in Dolby Digital format is present, the surround mode switches to DOLBY DIGITAL automatically. DTS Digital Surround Mode This device is equipped with the DTS Surround Mode. This mode enables you to enjoy 5.1 (=6) different output channels with high-quality digital signals bearing the DTS-brand, as well as DVDs, Compact Discs etc. This leads to an extraordinarily transparent stereoscopic sound experience of real 360°. Thus, DTS-programmes should always be reproduced in DTS-mode. (DTS is a trademark of DTS Technology, LLC. Produced under licence of the DTS Technology, LLC.) DOLBY DIGITAL Mode This operation mode, as well, enables you to enjoy 5.1 (=6) different output channels with digital surround sound from Dolby Digital programme sources. If you connect a DVD-player with a DOLBY DIGITAL output to the digital input (coaxial or optical) of your surround receiver and if you play a correspondingly encoded disc, you will experience excellent sound quality, accurate spatial representation and an optimal dynamic range. This results from 5 independent audio channels with full frequency range as well as a subwoofer channel that is called “LFE” (Low Frequency-only Effects channel). This 3-dimensional reproduction of the sound in the room with all its movements and relative positions is reached by the complete independence of the 6 audio channels from each other. In this way you are presented surprisingly real and impressive sceneries. Some Dolby Digital programmes contain information that allows you to compress the dynamic range of the soundtrack without compromising the sound quality. This results in “softer” sound effects that are possibly appropriate if you want to watch movies late at night. You will find more information on the dynamic function on page 17. • 20. Radio operation Your AV-receiver is equipped with a high-quality FM / medium wave (AM) receiver with RDS-function. RDS (Radio Data System) is a system for the additional information transmittal with the FM-radio programme. RDS radio tuners are able to filter this information out of the transmitted signal and make it useful for different functions, e.g. for showing the station’s name in the display or for searching for stations with certain programme contents. Not all FM-stations transmit RDS-information. Searching for channels 1. Press the TUNER/BAND key at the device or the TUNER key of the remote control. In the display, the abbreviation of the frequency band (FM or AM) as well as the currently set receiving frequency appears. 2. In order to switch to the other frequency band, press the TUNER/BAND key at the device or the BAND key of the remote control again. 3. Using the AUTO/MANUAL key of the remote control, you can switch between manual and automatic channel search. In automatic channel search (= “AUTO” can be seen in the display), press the TUNING + or – key slightly in order to make the device search for the next channel having a higher or lower frequency and a sufficiently strong signal. Then the search stops and the found channel is played. In manual channel search, you press the TUNING + or – key repeatedly in order to change the receiving frequency upwards or downwards and to adjust the desired channel. Tip: Ø This procedure lends itself if the signal of the desired channel is not strong enough for being perceived by the automatic channel search. 4. Press the STEREO key at the device or the ST/MONO key of the remote control during FM-operation in order to switch between stereo and mono operation. In stereo operation, the stereo sign “ ” is illuminated in the display. Tipp: Ø If the reception of a FM-stereo programme appears to be too noisy, switch to mono in order to reduce the noise. Storing channels Your AV-R500 has 15 presets for FM and 15 presets for AM that you can occupy automatically or manually with your preferred channels. Automatic channel storing 1. Choose the desired frequency band – FM or AM. 2. Then press the APS key so that the device automatically saves the 15 channels with the strongest reception on the presets. Manual channel storing 1. Choose the desired frequency band – FM or AM. 2. Set the first channel that you want to save. 20

If not, NOTHING appears in the display and the station set before is transmitted. Note: Ø Your RDS won’t function correctly if the strength of the reception of the involved station is too weak. Ø Not all FM-stations transmit similar RDS-information. Ø In different countries, the RDS-function may function differently. Memory backup in case of a power failure We have designed your AV-receiver in such a way that it keeps the stations in the presets for ca. 7 days if it is separated from the supply voltage. If the separation lasts for more than 1 week, all saved stations and made settings are, however, deleted. Reset If your device seems to be “frozen” or cannot be operated like described in this manual, press the RESET key (in the display frame below the STEREO key) with a pointed object (needle or something similar) through the small opening for ca. 3 seconds. This should remove the failure; all presets and other settings are, however, deleted as well. Tone control For radio operation, we have equipped the AV-receiver with a tone control. 1. Press the TREBLE key and you can increase or decrease the treble by up to +/- 8 dB using the +/- keys of the remote control. 2. Press the BASS key and you can increase or decrease the bass by up to +/- 8 dB using the +/- keys of the remote control. If you have used this setting und the values are thus not 0 dB any more, TONE is shown in the display. 22
