Technical points about the
dribble
•Stick stays on the ground and the ball the entire time
•Stick is vertical or slightly under the ball when moving from left to
right and right to left
•stock turns over the top of the ball when at the left or right end
point
•The left hand’s right thumb is down the back of the stick
•Check this by holding the stick vertically out in front of you
•The left wrist should be vertical and flat like a cricket stop
•The right hand is half way down the stick
•The elbows are bent
•The right wrist is bent
•The ankles, knees, and back are bent
•Head if up looking around the field
Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Pakistani right to left to right
drag

•ball is on the straight part of the
stick off of the right foot Text
•right wrist/elbow are bent
•stick is dragged to the left and
right arm straightens-stick “wraps
around the ball”
•ball is dragged in an arc
•ball is dragged back to the right

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Stopping in a static position
•Hard hits
     • Bouncing pass
     • Smooth pass
     • Air pass
• Front/reverse stick

     • Diagonal
     • Flat

Line the corresponding part of the stick up with the
     height of the ball

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009

Right side runs straight down field and hits left off of
     right/left foot

ball with your stick
Notice the strong
lefthand grip...Right

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Beating Flat
stick tackles

defender to extended
reverse stick

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Protecting the
ball
Blue uses their body to
shield the ball from red

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Shielding the
ball
Use your body to
protect the ball.

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Scan the field
When running with the
ball scan the field to find
the passing options

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Scan the field
Keep the ball in front of
you

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Scan the field
Change direction while
keeping the ball in front
of you.

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Scan the field
While being closed
down you must scan the
field and make the pass.

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Scan the field
Ball in front of feet
hands in front of body

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Running fast
with the ball
One handed right hand
dribble.

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Carrying the
ball
Ball in front of feet so
you can see the field
and change direction or
pass the ball.
Elbows bent ready to

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Scan the field
And change direction

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Carrying the
ball
Hands out in front of
body
Elbows and wrists bent
Back bent
Back flat

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Eliminating players
Burst into the space
Change of pace
Short steps-accelleration
Lift the ball over flat stick
tackles
Change direction
Desire
Blue should be on red’s
shoulder
  Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Eliminating defenders
Run away from the
defender’s stick.
Make the defender commit.
Get the defender out of their
center of gravity-leaning to
one side.
Protect the ball from the
tackle-do not stick obstruct.
Stay in your center-the next
defender is close by.
  Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Protect the
ball
Get low
Put body between
defender and ball
Move their stick out of
the way with body/leg

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Cut back into
defender with
Defender is running
sideways

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Defender’s
momentum
Cut back against the
defender’s run

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Beating divers
Diving defenders can be
beaten by moving the
ball away from their stick
or over their stick. Their
stick may swing towards
you.
Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Eliminating
goal keepers
Do not run through
them. They will take you
out.
Run across their bodies.
Watch out for the dive
and their one armed
tackle with the stick.
Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Shoot when
the goalie is
out of position
Blue has “dragged” the
goalie out of position and
has an open shot at goal.
The defender went for the
ball instead of running
with the forward. The
defender is eliminated.
Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
What should
 the defender
 have done?
The defender made a weak
one arm reverse stick tackle
and missed the ball. The
defender should have
channeled the forward into
the goalie who can then
“take them out”.
 Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
The forward is
free to shoot
The defender should be
next to the forward to
jab tackle the ball away.

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
don’t worry
about it
Hockey is a game of
percentages.
You won’t score on
every shot on goal.

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
How to get
ready
Tackle or stopping
requires preparation on
the run

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Player is
beaten
He won’t recover...

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Body position
for left wing
   Back, knees, elbows,
   and wrists bent.
   Hands close to
   quads.
   Ball carried outside of
   left foot in this case.
Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Going through
tacklers
Stay low
Get ball by them...but
not too far by

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
If they block
you
Make them feel it..they
will think twice next time.
Referee will see the
professional foul.

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Left handed
reverse
control
Left hand low
Wrist is bent
Eye on ball.

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Preventing
defender
.. from stopping the ball.
Bump them while you
run by.

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Change
direction
Change direction to beat
the defender. The
forward was running
towards the goal and
now cuts to the right.

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
They will hack
you

Derek E. Pappas Copyright © 2009
Cross over step
