DESIGN FOR CHANGE – SCHOOL CHALLENGE 2012
By Panchayat Union Middle School, L.K.B. Nagar, Madurai 625201
Our school has the strength of over 330 students. Among them more than 150
are coming from Nomads family. In our area the different type of Nomads community are
living. Whipping or Flogging people (those who are earning by whipping with lash for
livelihood with their children), Bull nodding masters (those who are earning by making their
bull nodding for livelihood with their children), Narikkuravas ( those who are hunting forest
animals and selling the ornaments, etc.), Blabbering foretellers(those who are foretelling for
2. their livelihood with their children), Astrologers, Day maskers(those who are masking as
Hindus god such as Anjanayar, Ramar, etc.), Blacksmith( those who are making iron items
such as vessel, etc.) , Muslim Fortune Predictors (those who are foretelling by religious
myths), Muslim Sooth sayers, Muslim Incense Makers or Perfumers(those who are incense)
and wandering shepherds, etc.. In our area there is an increasing rate of school drop-outs
which is the highest drop-out in Madurai district, Tamilnadu.
When we were informed about DFC – School Challenge Contest, we took the
same problem as our working task.
TITLE :- ABOLITION OF NOMADS DROP-OUTS OF SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN
Challenge Week :- September, 2012
FEEL…
We , the school children, had a mental problem and FELT that we need to do
something for the Nomads Drop-out Children of our age group who were neglected.
Education plays a vital role. Nomads poor children particularly from rural areas are severely
infected with illiteracy. There is an increasing rate of school Drop-outs in our area.
IMAGINE….
Design For Change is a golden plan for us. We thought for Literacy drive for
our Nomads children.
We planned to motivate the parents of Nomads Drop-out children to join them
in schools and Alternative Innovative Education Centre (AIE Centre is available in our
school by Sarva Shiksa Abiyan).
We spent a particular time with them as they might not agree in the first time.
The Team members and friends planned to visit the children and explained
the importance of Free and Compulsory Education which is Fundamental Right, Free Note
Books, Geometry Box, Cycle, Bus Pass, 4 set Uniforms, Atlas, Laptop, Foot wear, Noon
Meal with egg and vital grains, Bag, Colour Box, Scholarship and Incentives etc.
DO…
We, the Literacy Drive group, visited the parents of Nomads Drop-out
children and explained Free and Compulsory Education which is the Fundamental Right of a
child, and Free Items which are supplied by the government.
3. They refused to join the school just because they were not able to meet their
family expenditure and look after their new born babies, pet animals etc.
At last convinced them to join their Nomads Drop-out children in school and
Alternative Innovative Education Centre. The children are trained through an innovative,
friendly approach.
Our motive - We decided to do the best we can to bring about vision, joy and hope in the
eyes and lives of Nomads Drop-out students.
The Design for change provided the opportunity for us to learn about and do
service to fellow human beings who are Nomads Drop-outs.
We too felt very much satisfied that day. This was continued on the remaining
days and we are proud to say that it is still going on.
SHARE…
Almost 50 students are getting benefited by this DFC school challenge.
They feel comfortable.
They ar joyful and enjoying school life which once seemed to be lost.
Their parents are happy to see their Nomads Drop-out children getting Free
Education , who can write , read and speak English without fear.
Though the Design For Change-Challenge week is over, we have permanently
launched DFC Club in our school now. More than 40 students have become the members of
it. Overcoats and permanent batches have been arranged for them for their identity. DFC
members are helping not only the Nomads Drop-out children who are forced to beg and roam
but also are extending their fullest co-operation in maintaining the cleanliness in the school
campus and gardening.
DFC is now well known and being appreciated by the Parent Teacher
Association, Village Education Committee, School Management Committee, Panchayat
President ,members and also the public.
