Case study 1
Two PC’s are connected to a switch as shown. The PC’s belong to the domain,
which is setup on the domain controller. If both the PC’s require access to the
internet, what should be the gateway address and DNS server IP address
configured on the PC’s.
Explanation
The gateway address of PC1 and PC2 should be configured as the IP address of the
router, which is connected to the internet, which is 192.168.1.5. The DNS server IP
address should also be configured as 192.168.1.5, provided the router is configured
with the DNS server, which is provided by the ISP. If the router is not configured
with the DNS server, the ISP provided DNS server should be configured on the
PC’s. The role of the domain controller is to manage domain related activities. It is
not involved in any routing or IP forwarding activities.

Case study 2
Two PC’s, PC1 and PC2 are connected to a layer 2 switch. The PC’s are on
different network addresses. The switch is configured with a management IP
address. What should be default gateway on PC1 to ping PC2.
Explanation
PC1 and PC2 are on different network address. PC1 has to be configured with a
gateway address, to reach a system on a different network. The gateway should be
capable of forwarding packets from one network to a different network. In the
above topology, only a layer 2 switch is available, which does not have IP
forwarding capacity. If the management IP of the switch is configured as the
gateway for PC1, the switch would be unable to forward the packet to PC2, simply

because it does not have the required functionality. So in the topology,
communication between PC1 and PC2 cannot be achieved.
