All The Cloud Services You Need to Build
Apps
Every decade brings a major revolution in computing. We’ve seen the world shift from mainframe, mini, and client-server computing systems to cloud computing in the 1990’s. Companies like Amazon and Google, led the way in cloud computing and enabled companies like Salesforce.com to bring cloud computing to the enterprise. With cloud computing, we saw another major shift in the 2000’s with the advent of smartphones as companies like Apple and Steve Jobs showed us what was possible on a mobile device.. Mobile is no longer a ‘nice to have.’ It is now a ‘must have,’ and not just for consumers but for businesspeople as well. But it doesn’t stop there. The last few years have witnessed a groundswell in activity toward social media and social networking technologies. We see this in how people are connecting with other people on Facebook, or connecting with jobs on LinkedIn, You see it in how people are getting educated and finding out what’s most important to them by who they follow and the lists they subscribe to on Twitter. We call this the social revolution.
How people connect and interact is changing, too. Today, people use touch apps to access what they need. Touch apps makes it easy and intuitive to find information literally at the swipe of a finger. For many companies like Kimberly Clark, they let their customers sign contracts right on a tablet device. It’s amazing. For a sales person, it’s a simple and fast way to get contracts completed. And every mobile device is location-enabled. It revolutionizes how companies can interact with customers. By using this technology, companies can know exactly where their customers are at any given time if they are using your mobile apps. Smart companies use mobile apps to deliver targeted promotions to customers and relevant information to employees at the right time. For example, Caesar’s Palace Casino, a Salesforce.com customer, delivers targeted promotions to its high rollers. When a high roller enters a competing casino, Caesars can deliver the high roller a promotions for $1,000 in free chips if they come back to Caesars. That’s local intelligence.
When you look at how traditional IT organizations look to built mobile apps, many are following the same doomed patterns of legacy on-premise software platforms. The problem with those platforms is the developers have to spend an incredible amount of time coding the very basics – the back end plumbing of an app – before they can even start focusing on the user experience. Not to mention – after they’ve spent the majority of the time on the plumbing – they then have to spend orders of magnitude more time coding the user interface compared to today’s modern mobile app developers who are using all the latest frameworks and libraries built from javascript. Today – any web developer who knows javascript can be a mobile app developer using these open source frameworks.
The problem is that all of these modern developers using the latest frameworks from jquery, backbone and angular js – they’re building apps that are completely disconnected from customer data. That’s why were seeing companies build these mobile apps – that are like marketing campaigns – they’re throw aways built for a single purpose and that offer no long term staying power. Not to mention – they’re not built up to the same security standards of most enterprise apps – and the CIO has no visibility into performance, governance, or security compliance. So on the one hand you have the old school platforms building these slow expensive apps that never keep up with the business…And on the other you have these cutting edge apps that are disconnected from customer data.
The Salesforce Platform is the #1 cloud platform for Developers, Business Experts, and ISVs. It’s also the leading cloud platform according to IDC with 40% market share.Salesforce.com is #1 in the Worldwide Application Platform as a Service (PaaS) Market ranked ahead of Microsoft (12.8%), Amazon (12.5%), Engine Yard (6.6%), and Google (6.0%) with 40.6% marketshare. TTFHW = Time to first Hello World
This post-pc era requires a new way of thinking about delivering apps. Mobility should be at the heart of your business strategy. Success in the Post-PC era is not about developing a single app or one tool, but bringing all the pieces together. No single approach will satisfy the mobile needs of every customer, which is why we offer multiple ways for you to maximize your productivity while on the go.-----------------------------------------------MOBILE SOLUTIONS:• CORE APPLICATIONS – Touch.salesforce.com, Salesforce Mobile, and Chatter Mobile are great examples of applications. Native apps like Salesforce Mobile and Chatter Mobile are instantly responsive and they deliver a rich user experience. Hybrid or web-based apps like touch.salesforce.com offer native app-like qualities but are capable of running on a wide range of smartphones and tablets. These applications, including the hybrid version of Touch, can be used in an offline mode.• MARKETPLACE – Ever since the launch of the AppExchange, salesforce.com has proven its commitment to developing a partner-driven app marketplace and mobile is no exception. The Mobile AppExchange contains both partner-built and Salesforce-built apps all designed to give our customers a richer, more productive experience. It’s a democratic way for end users to custom-tailor their mobile Salesforce experience by choosing apps that closely match the way they work, by industry or by function.• PLATFORM – Sometimes, you have no option but to build a completely customized app. With the Force.com mobile platform, you can build custom, non-Salesforce-branded apps on virtually any device platform using SDK’s and other tools that Salesforce provides.
GARDNER SLIDE 7I'd like to PAUSE at this point to emphasize that PaaS -- even as the middle layer of cloud -- has several flavors, and there are choices on types of PaaS, not just PaaS providers themselves. And some providers, such as Salesforce.com actually offer PaaS choice.First there's the cloud IaaS model that still requires the IT folks to integrate to the stack and manage the middleware. I call this traditional IT with a cloud wrapper. It primarily removes the hardware component, but leaves the software stack up to the business. Then there's a polyglot approach, of multiple tools and frameworks, and with more of the software infrastructure delivered as an integrated service. This is close to the Heroku, a Salesforce, com company, approach. And then there's what I call STANDARDIZED PaaS, best exemplified by Salesforce.com's Force.com, where automation extends across the cloud-enabled application platform thanks to the highly visual tools. More of the plumbing from development to deployment is hidden, and more types of users can take part in the apps customization. Rosie Notes: With Salesforce’s Force.com, for example, is a combination of declarative and visual + code when needed, which extends app creation ability to admins and business analysts.Indeed, IDC recently conducted and in-depth, groundbreaking study for Salesforce that found customers were able to build apps about 5 times faster than traditional platforms like .NET. (I removed the cost statement – we are depracating that)By freeing IT organizations from assembling and maintaining infrastructure, and freeing developers from having to reinvent the wheel all the time, PaaS offers businesses a faster way to build apps. (again, remove the cost statement)And then can make better progress to gaining analytics, mobile, social, search and other new enterprise requirements.
Customers have built over 3 million applications, and they have installed over 1 million applications through the AppExchange.Customers of all sizes and across all industries, like Coca Cola, Levi’s, Facebook, and AT&T, are delivering innovation to their employees and customers now with the Salesforce Platform. The Salesforce Platform is processing over 70 billion transactions per quarter and 1B transactions a day.We have more than 1M developers and more than 3 million apps have been developedBy 2015, 43% of CIOs expect to support more than half of their organizations' transactions on a cloud infrastructure using a software-as-a-service model. The adoption rate will rise to 74% by 2020. (Source: Gartner The New IT: Drivers, Challenges and Opportunities, 1.27.12)

Melissa- watch Leyla’s video here if you want more color on this part of the pitch:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAOI_RGo5-k&list=SP6rwmnTwDCIcwzlPZKC6d9HoPyuUN46-yEssentially we are comparing the opportunity between the Apple app store and the AppExchange on a per app basis.
Good stats here Melissa from Dom- IN ISRAEL ALONE, THERE ARE 800 CUSTOMERS AND MORE THAN 200 NON-PROFIT CUSTOMERS. WE ADD APPROX. 60 NEW CUSTOMERS/QUARTER.WE HAVE 32 APPS CURRENTLY FROM 27 ISRAELI PARTNERS.
