Why Rate Buildings ?
Buildings consume:
1. 40% Energy.....
2. 42% Water.......
3. 50% Raw materials …

(TERI Griha Manual Vol.1)
Building Activity contributes to :
1. 50% Air Pollution......
2. 42% Green House Gas....
3. 50% Water Pollution......
4. 48% Solid Waste Generated....
5. 50% CFC.....
We Architects and Engineers
Seem like some “Villains”.... :(
Following “Ratings” will make us less of so.. :):)

Ratings – evaluation Tool for Ecological
Perfomance through Life Cycle of a Building..
Ratings- What do they do?
1. Look at various parameters of
a)Design....b) Construction...c) Operation
2.Criterion with assigned Points
3.A project gets points...points add up...
4.Voluntary in nature...
Some other rating systems:
BREEAM:Building Establishments
 Environmental Assessment Method.
One of the earliest developed in 1990 in UK.

CASBEE: Comprehensive Assessment System
 for Building Environment Efficiency.
Developed in Japan 2001.
GB Tools: Green Building Tools developed by
 International Framework committee of 25
countries . Developed in 1998 and constantly
 updated

HK BEAM: Developed in1996 in Hong Kong

LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental
  Design developed in US 1998.
GRIHA

Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment.
Developed by TERI and endorsed by MNRE.
Salient points
GRIHA has been developed for the different
 agro-climatic Zones of India.

Developed particularly for non-ac spaces or
 partially ac building.

Evaluators are experts from different fields
connected to the buildings and are from
specific region where the building is situated
Stresses on optimization of visual and thermal
 indoor comfort.

Integrates all relevant Indian Codes and
Standards to act as tools for implementation
Emphasis:
 Minimise -
-resource consumption
-waste generation
-overall ecological impact
 By Five R philosophy-

-Refuse
-Reduce
-Reuse
-Recycle
-Reinvent.
Broad categories:
 Site selection and Planning
 Building Planning and Construction

 Building Operation and Maintenance

 Innovation

(34 Criteria---for this presentation 19 criteria
  taken up)
Criterion 2:
Preserve existing Vegetaion/or plant as per
  Griha (1 point)
Proper timing of Construction w.r.t. Rains
  (optional clause no points)
Confine Const. Activity (1 point)
Erosion and sedimentation control (1 pt.)
Preserve topsoil (1 point)

Criterion 3:
Soil Conservation:
Very important oft overlooked.
It takes 100 years for 25 mm of soil to form (Griha manual:Vol 2)

In India we have different types of soil, identify
  them, study fertility, pH,saline levls.,
Store it at site...
Avoid carting fertile soil from elsewhere..
Check this site : http://ceds.org/esp.html gives
vary comprehensively cost incurred when soil
 is left un-conserved.

Involve Landscape Architect from the beginning
of the design as well as all the time during
  construction.

Total Points -2
Criterion 8:
