1. Background1. Background
For Earth Day many activists are involved
in environmental and social issues. In fact
‘Save the Earth’ is a popular topic these
days. To many of us, it means taking
shorter showers, using energy-efficient light
bulbs, carrying cloth bags, buying organic
-grown foods, riding public transportation,
and STOP using Styrofoam.

What are the 3RsWhat are the 3Rs
• Reduce
Lessen usage of things that contribute to
pollution
Examples
Plastic products, petrol, styrofoam products,
other pollution-causing products

Literature ReviewLiterature Review
• Singapore’s
households do not
recycle enough
• Can recycle up to 60%
of “rubbish”
• Reduce amount of
waste - choose what to
throw away, buy
bottles instead of cans
• Reuse items, e.g.
newspapers,
envelopes, etc.

Literature ReviewLiterature Review
• Many items can be transformed from
junk into unique treasures!
• Whether it is incorporating odds and
ends into handmade cards or using
scraps to create new stamps.
• There are plenty of opportunities for
recycling and repurposing in many
craft projects.

• In just a few short years, Freecycle has
generated an spectacular worldwide
outpouring of generosity, changing the world
one gift at a time. Folks with extra happily
share; those who need gracefully receive, all
without judgment - or any funds - passed.
• Freecycle performs many wonderful
functions: building bonds and community,
keeping material items from the landfills, and
redeeming the clutter that consumes us by
moving it forward to a new, productive life.

Freecycle is a great concept and it can
keep useful stuff out of the landfill.
We often see some very nice stuff

Good morning Mr Pierre, Ms Tan, teacher mentors and fellow leaders. We are pleased to share our project. Our mentors are Mdm Jaspal KAur, Mrs Polly chew and Mr Wai. We are thank ful for their guidance and support throughout the project.
Trash to Treasure is presented by Alisha, Amirah, Ain, Fatin, Shernin and Samantha
The ideas were hatched from the Story Board.
This is a scope of our presentation .
We valued team work and at the same time we practiced work division. This allowed everyone of us to be a leader in One area . This gave us room to develop and grow as leaders.
For Earth Day many activists are involved in looking into environmental and social issues. In fact ‘Save the Earth’ is a popular topic these days. To many of us, it means taking shorter showers, using energy-efficient light bulbs, carrying cloth bags, buying
organic -grown foods, riding public transportation, and STOP using Styrofoam.
But we wanted to find out what it meant to us . We decided to do some analysis and research.
First of all we had to understand the definition of 3Rs. It means to Lessen usage of things that contribute to pollution
What about reuse – It means to Use something again without wasting it
Finally Recycle meant to
Treat or process (used or waste materials) so as to make suitable for reuse
We also did some Literature Review. We realised that Singapore’s households do not recycle enough.
We can recycle up to 60% of “rubbish”
Thus we also realized that many items can be transformed from junk into unique treasures!
Whether it is incorporating odds and ends into handmade cards or using scraps to create new stamps,
There are plenty of opportunities for recycling and repurposing in many craft projects
Before we embarked on our project, we decided to conduct some survey so as to gain some depth into the concerns.
This is the response to the first question.
Many of the respondents felt more could be done by everyone of us and not only by the school.
These comments gave us the assurance that everyone agreed that we should do something more for Mother Earth.
We decided to work on the infusion of the concept of Recycle and Reuse
We thought of innovative ideas to infuse the concept of the reduce and recycle and came up with two projects . These were 1) To make materials out of recyclables. 2) To make a board game on the concept of 3Rs 3) To hold a Garage Sale and 4) To set up a blog where people can exchange their unwanted goods for something. All the team members could vote twice for an idea that they would like to work on. Most of the team members voted for the Garage Sale and the Blog.
We then evaluated the two short listed ideas. We listed the advantages and disadvantages. We felt the idea of jumble sale was not very innovative. Moreover, it would be difficult to store goods and getting rid of unsold items. As for the blog-it was creative, innovative and we had virtual space to store and exchange items.
We again did some literature review on our idea. There were many people already practising Free cycle. This is what one blog states. We would like to highlight the importance of building bonds and community .This will be great for our NE education
With that we decided to introduce the concepts of Free-cycle and Re-connect .
Our main objective was To reduce waste by connecting people who are throwing away goods with others who are seeking the same goods - We realized that we can make trash to treasure for some.
We were convinced that Freecycle is a great concept and it can keep useful stuff out of the landfill.
We worked out a time schedule . Fatin trained all of us in creating the blog. She led the rest of us on this concept. She seemed the expert.
These were our goals - To have at least two exchanges or ‘buy’ transactions per month.
To raise the awareness of the concept of Freecycling to school-mates by 80%.
Before we embarked on the our project once again we decided to conduct some survey so as to understand our customers better.
Many of them felt our idea was interesting and innovative. This gave us some affirmation.
We then asked if they would want to exchange items. Again the response was positive.
Finally when asked what items they would like to exchange , many indicated TOYS, books , costume jewellery. We were not certain of the bulky items,
And now Let us share our BLOG.
As we looked at reviewing our project targets we realised we were still a long way of achieving it.
We realised thAt we needed more publicity. -we had not received many postings
However Our project is on going and we would open our blog to all of you.
With your support we can do wonders and change Trash to Treasure
The benefits from this project were manifold. This project has allowed us …
to value the importance of teamwork.
2) to think out-of-the-box and to be innovative.
3) to face and overcome many challenges such as Designing and testing the blog.
4) Finally it helped us to gain knowledge on the concept of Social Innovation.
As we all know the Earth is dying, everyone should play their part in saving Mother Earth. We can make use of the concept of freecycling to save Mother Earth, nature and all the organisms living on Earth. It is therefore important to raise the awareness of the concept among parents, as well as young children who are the future generations of the world.
